Do any of your Yorkies howl? So, Alice has developed this habit...in the morning especially (although she just did it now) where she grabs one of her favorite toys, carries it around the house in her mouth, and whines the whole time. I'm 99% sure she's looking for a safe place to hide it because she'll stop at random locations, go in circles, then cry again and take it around to find another spot. When she finally finds an acceptable place lol she puts the toy down and howls! Now, I know dogs howl (we have a Beagle, nuf said lol) but I honestly don't think I ever heard a little dog do it, at least not so dramatically anyway. This isn't like a little howl that gets thrown in with barking, it's like howling at the moon LOL head back, lips puckered, the whole 9 yards. She sounds like the beagle on "The Fox and The Hound" Disney movie when he's a puppy and tries it for the first time LOL I think I posted breifly about this on a "funny things your Yorkie does" thread, but she just did it for the second time today and it's crazy to watch and I couldn't help but wonder if anybody else's Yorkies do this? |
I would love to see that. I bet it is adorable. Marcie kinda grrs but that's it. |
I had another yorkie that would howl. We would talk to each other. My son was younger at the time and I would teach him (yorkie) to talk. We would say Shane. I would say (to the dog) say Sha aaaaane he would left his head up and do the same thing but in a howl. It was funny. I heard Jack howl when Josie was in heat and he couldn't get to her. Freaked me out. LOL |
Yes!!! My yorkie, ZoE, howls too. She sounds like she's part Beagle...but she's all Yorkie. |
Lol, I'm gonna have to borrow my mom's video camera one of these days and catch it on film. Even the way she carries the toy around whining serching for a good place for it is priceless. At first I was slightly worried that she was really stressed about it, but then she finds that sweet spot and howls, then she's done lol. The whole ordeal takes a good 5 minutes:) |
Can't wait to see the video! My Lollipop howls, on occasion, usually when I leave her. The last time we went to a dog show, we stopped for potty breaks and when it was my turn, Lolli was sitting in the carseat, threw back her head and let loose. It was hysterically funny and very cute! |
Rosie howls when she is excited! I have Beagles too so I know all about the howling! I think they trained Rosie how to do it!! :D |
Kacee sometimes howls at sirens.:D |
Too cute! I'd love to hear a Yorkie howl. We are always trying to get Levi to howl, but I don't think he knows how. Our bigger dog howls and Levi just stares at him and starts barking. |

I have read that howling is primarily a dog's way of sending "long distance" messages. Max howls a little when I am out of the house, and it sounds like he is trying to send me a message. Wooowooooooowwooooooo. :) |
I've heard Jackson howl TWICE --- I wish he would do it more! I think it's absolutely adorable, LOL. We were at the dog park and a 'Puggle' was howling and Jackson was staring at him, like studying what he was doing and all the sudden, he lifted his head back and started howling too. Everyone in the park was cracking up! I've tried to get him to do it again (looking like a fool in the process) and he won't do it. He just barks at me. |
My sister's dog would act kind of like that when she was in heat, treating her dragon toy like a puppy. Tibbe flies all over the house when he's hiding his toys or chewies but he doesn't whine or anything while he is doing it. |

I think little dogs howls are cute. |
Oh goodness the description you gave of The Fox and The Hound had me rolling. Please try to catch this on cam. It sounds hilarious. |
Rusty howls to let me know 1. that is exactly what he wants, or 2. he wants something SO BADLY, or 3. to go visit Daddy at work.... 4. his heart is breaking like when we leave Daddy's work and he wants to stay... It's cute! |
Tila howls quite often. It's the funniest thing, she sounds like Mr. Magoo. Well, at least I call it her Mr. Magoo howl. You know that sheep dog on 101 dalmations when they're doing the twilight bark. That's exactly what she sounds like. |
One night Peek a Boo fell sound asleep on a pile of laundry (his favorite haunt) and I was (where else) on YT and watching the TV. All of a sudden I hear this noise and I'm thinking, 'What the heck is that? I'm not watching Animal Planet!' So I look around and I see his silhouette, just like a mini wolf howling at the moon. Lips pursed. head up howling away. We had just added 3 females to the clan, and I figure he was either calling for help, or claiming them! Too funny. That was last year, he just turned 14 years old in December! :D |
Both of mine do, but, unfortunately, they haven't had any singing lessons. NO harmony ! |
Yes Macy does this too. When the phone rings she will go to the phone closest to where she is and put her head back and howl away until someone answers it. I tried it with my cell phone and she did the same thing. Maybe she is expecting an important call. |
My little Cricket would sometimes howl when I would go out the door and leave her, but never when finding a hiding place for a toy - too cute! I would also love to see it if you could tape it! |

:lol tearsHer agent maybe?.... |
Funny you ask this. Darwin is two years old in three days and last night he was sleeping on my lap. He lifted his head, let out this loud howl and then put his head back down. Must have been having a great dream. This is the first time I ever heard him howl - very strange!:) |
My guys howl on occation, when they are put away in a room for a short time. I find it so sad... it's their way of telling us we're here and we can't find you! But there are rare instances where you need to keep them closed in for their own good. |
Yes!! My little Remy has just started doing that but it's like she is trying to tell me something she looks up at me and starts to howl like she is talking, I have tried to get her to do it on command but she won't only when she has something to say.... it's the cutest thing ever.. |
Buster will howl occassionally. It almost sounds like a cat yowl at times. The first time we heard it we were wondering if it even came out of Buster. We were laughing so hard I think he got upset we were making fun of him he gave a little harumpf and walked away. But he has done it a few times. It is really funny with the head tilt and when he starts there is no sound at first and then it builds..very cute...very funny. My own little mini wolf! |
