| ![]() I also wanted to ask you experts about this..The vet tech mentioned that when Foxy is under anesthesia that they will cut her nails for me, but something about cutting the quicks? I know that she has super long nails with long quicks because her nails hadnt been cut in years it seemed. She was so neglected by whatever owners she had, thats another story. So anyways any ideas on this?

| ![]() Awww, that's wonderful news! She's gonna be the prettiest, healthiest girl around with you taking such good care of her. ![]() Did they say they were going to cut the quick, or just that it might happen?

| ![]() Im not an expert and someone else may have a better explanation. If they are waiting until she is asleep to cut her nails, due to the length. Then they are probably going to cut into the quick (the bloodvessel that runs down the middle of each nail),which will make them bleed. They will then probably cauterize the end to stop the bleeding. All of this is alot easier to do if she is not wiggling and much less stress on your baby and you. Hope everything goes well!! |

| ![]() I had to have my dog's nails quicked once when I had been down with my back and radiating leg pain. They did it during the dental and I swear the dog never seemed to notice! I still gave her some pain medication the vet prescribed twice the first po day and a 1/2 dose the 2nd but she seemed to do just fine. I'd gotten over my acute disc by the time I got her in for the dental and I was able to keep her nails very short after that. It gave me the heebie-jeebies to have it done but they had gotten long enough to click whenever she walked and I knew it would take a while and a lot of stressing on both our parts to try to get them shortened again little by little as the quick was likely long so I had the vet quick her with some misgivings. I kept her very quiet for the next two days after the quicking in case her nails might bleed or something so we had none of that.

| ![]() Yeah, the cuticle grows out long if the nail is not cut pretty regularly and it can take a long while and a lot of angst to get the nails short enough again. If they are asleep and the nails are quicked really short, the cuticles are supposed to withdraw rather quickly and you have a nice, fresh start. It just gives me the jitters thinking of doing it on my nails - having them cut back into the quick and having to live with them that way until the nail grows back out but the vet said it wasn't the same as it is the nerves in our soft tissue around the nails plus the cuticle itself that gets so tender and sensitive after our nails are cut into the cuticle. He swore it wouldn't be that bad for my dog but he gave me some pain medicine to give - not the narcotic stuff but the other type and I gave it.

| ![]() Thanks everyone! Also I called the vet late yesterday afternoon and they said her pre surgery bloodwork come back normal, she said everything looks great! Woo hooo! Being that I didnt know her complete medical history and the fact that she is five, I was concerned, so this was a huge relief!
