Yeah, the cuticle grows out long if the nail is not cut pretty regularly and it can take a long while and a lot of angst to get the nails short enough again. If they are asleep and the nails are quicked really short, the cuticles are supposed to withdraw rather quickly and you have a nice, fresh start. It just gives me the jitters thinking of doing it on my nails - having them cut back into the quick and having to live with them that way until the nail grows back out but the vet said it wasn't the same as it is the nerves in our soft tissue around the nails plus the cuticle itself that gets so tender and sensitive after our nails are cut into the cuticle. He swore it wouldn't be that bad for my dog but he gave me some pain medicine to give - not the narcotic stuff but the other type and I gave it.
