Can your 'tinies' jump up on the sofa???

Go to the CSN store online and into the pet supplies they have a number of pet stairs in all kinds of sizes and heights. I just got a new bed that is quite high and my original 3 step stair is not high enough. I went on CSN and they have steps for as tall as this bed, I am SOLD on this store...

So the bouncing isn't as bad for Sugar (6lbs 7 oz) as the 'tiny' ones? I did not realize that she was nearly twice the size of some of the dogs here. When we were asked to give her a home, I thought she was especially small. Cannot even begin to count the hours I've spent reading, reading, reading here to learn about what she needs. We were told that she is 2-years old.

Course I don't know about your dog's shoulders or other joints but I do know that all smaller dogs' joints and bones are more fragile and more susceptible to regular forces than a larger, more substantial dog's joints or bones. A German Shepherd can jump down from a low roof with no injury and go running on his way. If my Tibbe did that, he would be in surgery immediately with massive injuries.

That just illustrates the point that having smaller dogs requires us to think a bit more about their activities in order to keep them happy and healthy as long as possible and no, you cannot keep your dog from jumping - they will do it. I just try to bear in mind to restrict a lot of jumping and high jumping with my Yorkie but it is a hard task to undertake as they all think they are circus performers!!!

I work at a specialty veterinary clinic and I alway remember our neurologist saying "It's not so much the jumping up (which is still bad) but the jumping down...it hurts the knees and it jerks the whole spine and back. My yorkie (Lacey) has no fear of falling or even jumping. So I bought stairs/ramp and she took to them right away. It was the best investment I got for my pups!!!

We brought Bevos stairs back out for our new baby....he is almost 7 weeks old and already figureded them out! Cutest thing!

Tibbe had no idea what stairs were when I got his and it was so cute trying to get him to use them. He was sooooo suspicious at first of those funny things but soon enough he was zipping right up and down them. I'll bet it is cute to see a really young one figuring it all out!

I bought my doggie stairs at our local wallgreen, they were very resonable.
best thing i ever bought Molly has super duper short legs, some are not made so well so i had hub do a few adjustments to make sure they were stable.

Jackson is thankfully 16lbs because boy is he a jumper. I don't think I could ever get him to stop jumping, it's just so normal to him. He's been able to jump on/off all the furniture in the house since he was fairly young. He's always on top of couches and chairs, etc. I think he thinks he's a cat. I like to keep him really agile though... his back legs are really muscular and strong and he's built that up through jumping, as well as a few tricks that he does. Even sit pretty builds up those back leg muscles nicely. I think if I never allowed it, it would be worse and maybe harder on his joints.

My dads JRT/Shihtzu mix cannot jump on the furniture (well, she can the couch... but it takes her 3-5x, lol). They bought doggie stairs and she wouldn't use them... they end up just picking her on/off furniture which is a pain in the butt, but they could not get her to use the stairs no matter what they did. Jackson just jumps over top of them, lol.

That funny...my cairn terrier will do the same thing. She looks at her sister like...really are you going to use those stairs. She never used them either. Same thing with my Lacey...I think she's a cat instead of a yorkie!!! She sits on the back of the couch (in the sun) and watchs people go down the road. LOL

Thanks! It took some coaxing to get hubby to cater to small dogs but now he keeps looking for other ideas.
