You know...I'm actually quite puzzled on why there is such a disparity in prices of yorkies. Is it the cost that the breeder has incurred to breed and raise the pup? Or does the pup meet some kind of physical and health standard? Or both? I've seen many yorkie pups that don't even display CLOSE to the standard...and they are upwards of 3,000 to 5,000 dollars.

I guess the question is: if you are a average Joe Schmo looking for a puppy and you want say, a silky coat, compact body, well set proportioned ears, classic well defined blue and gold coloring, etc., within the standard 5-7 pounds, what can you expect to pay? Or better question, will a breeder actually sell a pup of this quality outside of her/his breeding program?

And secondly, if the breeders are not keeping these pups they are selling, you wouldn't have to be the sharpest pencil in the box to realize that there is something about the pup that disqualifies it from the standard they are breeding for. So it begs the question. Is the "quality" of this pup inferior ? Does it not meet up to the standard of the breeder? And if so, why are people paying huge prices for an inferior pup who does not come up to the standard? Always been a puzzle to me... :confused:

Many of us will have litters that produce three or less puppies. We are using a smaller female 5-7 pounds. A lot of these other breeders are using girls that weigh up to 18 pounds. Thay have fewer c-sections and will generally have a larger litter. These other breeders start breeding the females at the first heat and breed the dog every cycle until they can no longer breed.

The other breeders do not take any of thier dogs to the vet. They take care of every thing themselves. I know of one who will let the dog labor in trouble before she will make a trip to the emergency animal clinic when the vet is not available. you ask why? because a c-section may cost double she is looking at $1,800.00 plus instead of $800.00. Some will not take the female to the vet at all or any puppies that may be sick. They just let them die.

I may go outside to breed my female stud fees alone can cost me $1,200.00 plus another 500.00 for shipping - these breeders may have 1 or 2 males-
they just breed the two togther not caring to try and breed to help the breed. They do not care about faults- may breed brother and sister together.
No thought or care goes into the puppies they produce.

These other breeders may use the cheapest food on the market- cuts down on the cost. I use high quality food costs a lot more.

This other breeder will let puppies leave home at 5 to 6 weeks. Mine are 12 weeks of age. I have more money and time invested in my kids with shots worming , socializing and care.

When you add it all up I have spent a lot more in time, care and financially in
breeding my litter.

The not in fashion dogs are priced just as much as yorkies. The problem is that you may not be talking to show breeders who can explain they face the same problems as we do in yorkies.

Okay. This lady that lives only 10 minutes away from us is having yorkie puppies due the second week of December. She wants $900 for the females. She already put me at top of the list. And told me to call the week after Thanksgiving and I can see the parents. I can maybe put a deposit down on the pup when it is born, so she can hold it. And give her the rest when the pup is old enough to come home. Income tax is right around the corner. My mom said she is not going to help pitch or allow me to put up that much money for the dog. Not that I would be able to come up with the $900 myself. I only make $6.55 an hour and have car note, credit card bill, loan note, car insurance and a cell phone to pay. But, with Christmas holidays coming, my checks should be more than usual. I just won't buy any gifts if that what it takes and hope my friends understand. My mom already asked her on the phone if she would come down and the price. And the lady is very sweet, but she said she can't. Now, my mom said if I go to meet the lady next week, she said she is going to ask her again to at least go down $100! I told her that was very rude and she is going to get upset with us. She has her price set for a reason, but my mom is very stubborn and won't budge on this. I am already very depressed and I can't take any more disappointment or heartbreak. And everytime they do have a yorkie in our price range, even if it just a 45 minute drive. She won't drive here, she won't drive there. She is scared of everything! I could of got a female yorkie for $650 but just because it was a 4 hour drive, she refused to go. She only drives around our town and that is it! That is why I am so limited! I would drive out there myself but it is very hard when you working 10-hour shifts 6 days a week.

Well you have alot working against you in getting a puppy. I had to drive an hour and a half away and I live in the City. I hope you can find something but my quess is your gonna have to drive or pay alittle more than you want to. Good luck though.

Honey, I know this is not what you want to hear but if your working 10 hour days, 6 days a week, when will you find time to be with this new puppy?

I agree with trouble. A yorkie will have a VERY hard time being away from you that long. They are very social dogs who always want to be with you. They will also end up peeing in their living area after trying to hold it for so long (they don't like going where they sleep.)
As for the money. I think they lady might get mad at your mom and refuse to deal with her if she keeps that up. I would get annoyed at it. No means no, it's that simple. If I were you I would call the lady and explain how your mom is to her. Meet up with her somewhere and give her the extra money. But then again, you should also let your mother know that you are an adult now, you work hard for your money and choose to spend it on whatever you want.
My mom was stingy about money too. Even now that I've been living on my own for 5 years and make twice as much money she still gets mad at me if I spend money. She thought I was crazy for spending $500 on my puppy Brandy. God forbid she find out about the $3,00 tortoise.

Yeah, waiting sounds sensible and more humane to the puppy to me. Sometimes we can have what we want -- just not right when we want it.

The puppy will NOT be left un attended to for long periods of time. My mom does not work. So, she is home most of the time. And I work retail and it is the Christmas season, so it will only be like this until January. And after January, I will be looking for a regular job with 8-5 hours. And my dog would never have to hold her bladder all day long. My yorkie Lacey was paper trained and we plan to paper train this dog as well. She will be confined to a certain area of the house until we get her paper trained. It did not take long to train Lacey. She mastered it in only a couple of weeks time. And no, I will not bring my mom to that lady if she keeps it up. I am 29 years old and am a adult. If she won't go half and half with me, then I will give the lady a down payment for the puppy. Then, give her some more money in January. End of February or early March, she should be ready to come home. And I will have my income tax money by then. I already asked the lady if it was okay since she knows I won't be able to come up with the whole $900 in one shot. She said it was fine. Then, I will give her the rest with my income tax money plus my regular earnings. I paid off a $1700 cruise for myself and my aunt in less than 6 months. So, I should be able to come up with the $900 for the puppy. Even if it means making a lot of sacrifices and having to do without.

Cajungal, have you decided what you would look for in a newborn puppy? This is my opinion, but there is no wa in the world you can pick the best puppy for you if you must pick at a very early age. My Biewer/Parti puppies are hardly recognizeable as the same newborn puppies..My little female was the largest newborn by 1 ounce and is now the smallest of the litter..she is outweighed by her brothers by a half pound. My Chrystopher was by far the tiniest and he is Mr. Horse now. He had a very distinct white marking across his rump that is almost not visible now. My point is if you have a look in mind for an adult, you cannot tell if the newborn puppy will look anything like that. I know that we love our babies no matter their looks but they do not always turn out like the parents and that is really the only features you have to use when you select your baby..

I will love my baby no matter what. Looks are not everything. I have a lot of love to give no matter what. As long as she is healthy, that is all I am concerned about. My yorkies happiness and health is the most important to me.

That's what I like to hear!!! So, when you go to see the puppies, ask if you can take and post pics of all the puppies and especially the one you pick..It is fun to watch them turn from squirmy little black and brown blobs to real doggies..

My favorite line is when i get the person who states " I only want the best" and then goes onto describe the dog according to the standard to a T the perfect yorkshire terrier. I give my prices and then" OH so much can you come down in price. I only have this much to spend and need the shipping included and I want full registration so I can have puppies."

My prices are cheap compared to what I am seeing breeders charge just for pet quality babies. Go figure.
