| Can anyone help Join Date: Mar 2011 Location: uk Posts: 1 http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif My puppy has to have surgery for PDA Hello all I got my little Maggie my little yorkie about 4 weeks ago, when I took her for her vaccinations I was told she had a bad heart murmur. She has now had a scan on her heart and she has PDA. I have been told that without surgery she would be likely to die within a year. She is having surgery in 2 weeks time as she is only 13 weeks old she has to have full heart surgery and have her chest opened (if she was a larger dog I was told the can do the op through a vein). The cost is around £3,500 which I am hopefull may be partly covered on her insurance although as it is something she was born with may not. I am so worried for her having such a big op, plus she will be in hospital for over a week she is so small. Has anyone else had this problem with thier puppy? If so how did it go. Each time I cuddle her it makes me want to cry because of what she has to go through |

| Am so sorry for your little girl's situation and I pray for her..... However, requesting for donations is against YT rules.

| I will keep you and little Maggie in my thoughts and prayers. Have you considered getting a second opinion, to verify the condition? If she doesn't seem to have any problems, i.e., she is active, eats, poops, pees, etc., I would suggest having a second opinion including an ultrasound. |

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Welcome to YT, I am sorry to hear about your pup. Have you contacted the breeder about this? Also have you contacted the PDSA? They may be able to carry out the operation for free...

I'm so sorry to hear that. I know there was a thread on here a few months ago with a woman who had a pup with this condition. I did a search how-ever and was unable to find it. Here is a link that can bring you more info on this genetic condition: Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Dogs Please do let your breeder know about this condition as it is inherited and it seems like the common wisdom is not to breed this pair again. What you have been told seems to be what I've found out on the web about this condition.

| Thankyou all for replies and kind wishes, I have told the breeder of Maggies problem she has said that she would take Maggie back and refund my money, or swap her for another pup. I coundn't do either as she is now a member of the family. She has been seen by 3 Vets and had a scan of her heart which is already slightly enlarged and she is only 14 weeks. So surgery is the only option and she should then have a normal life. She is going into the Royal Vet College Queen Mother Hospital on the 6th April and will have her op the following day. I will post her progress as she recovers. Once again thank you all for your help and advise. Karen and Maggie |
