| Bella, you and DH be on the lookout in case that hungry hawk comes back cruising in your neighborhood! I read that Mesquite has had coyotes in the more remote areas recently and I have to watch Tibbe constantly too when he's out but gosh, when something comes out of the sky, it is hard to be prepared for that! | Scooter and Sadie weigh 8 and a half pounds. Can a hawk still carry them off? I do not let them out alone but I do have a bad ankle due to being hit by a drunk driver and my yard is huge so I would have a hard time getting to them if a hawk swooped down on them. Maybe I will start leashing them when I take them out. |

Thanks for the warning. I don't let the dogs go out alone but I can honestly say that living on Long Island I've never seen anything big. I think the chances are finding Hawks and Owls are more likely upstate, but as I said thanks for the warning and I will surely keep a closer watch on my babies when they're outside.

Yes, and then there's the people that appear out of no where who want your baby. Several months after I got Tibbe, I was watching him from inside the utility porch through the open back door as it was cold outside. A small car came down the alley, slowed by our yard, the several adult inhabitants all looked at Tibbe and it sped on. I called Tibbe in and about 2 1/2 hours that same day, he was back out again and believe it or not, the car drove back by. I thought it strange but stayed there just inside the utility porch as Tibbe raced around the yard playing in the cold outside air. Within about 45 seconds, the car came backing fast down the alley, skids to a stop by my back fence and 2 of the people start getting out of the backseat of the car! I came through the back door onto the back porch calling Tibbe to "Come" and walking on my cane right toward them as fast as I could, I guess with eyes flashing and smoke blowing from my nostrils. The lady and the man looked at me (coming toward them as fast as I could) with these just deadpan faces, stopped in unison, turned and quickly scooted back around the back of the car, got in it and the driver sped off. Tibbe had gone to the back porch after I called as I think he was unsure of what was going on. I got him inside and called the Mesquite Police Department and reported the incident, gave a description of the car and people and asked them to be on the outlook for possible dognappers in our small city. I think if these people had just been stopping to admire Tibbe, they would not have rushed off as soon as I appeared. Needless to say, I keep a sharp eye on Tibbe for all kinds of hunters.

We were shopping one day over in the Apalachicola area and a gentleman came up to comment about our tiny yorkie. He asked if we heard what happened the week before and we said, no, what? And he proceeded to tell us that a lady had her little poodle out on the sidewalk and a hawk or eagle (can't remember which) came down and took the poodle. He was warning us to be very careful. Also, I have heard of bigger dogs being carried off by these large birds. We keep our eyes peeled any time that we take our yorkies out and never let out without us...this is one reason we pee pad train ours. So glad your DH saw the bird!!

So glad to hear all is well with Bella! It is scary to be sure. I have a 100' X 100' fenced in yard and I am always out there when my Boxer and Yorkie are out. I've been hearing too many stories of these hawks, owls, eagles or whatever. I am always looking around to see if there is anything circling and into the trees for anything. Someone told me once that Turkey Buzzards don't come after live things...I still don't trust any large bird.
