| Need some help Sadie is refusing to eat any dog/puppy food and I am just at a loss of what to do. She wants to eat what ever me or any other family member is eating so I know it is not the pregnancy that is making her not want to eat her food. I went to the pet store, spent 40 dollars on all kinds of different dog food, science diet, pro plan and a bunch more. She will not eat any of them and I am worried that the puppies are not getting enough nutrition. Any advice would be greatly apreciated. |

| Can you mix a little bit of your food in with her dog food to see if she will eat? Or maybe you can put some of your food in her dish and then take it out so the smell of your food will be in her dish (but not the food) and then put her food in her dish? Good luck! |

| Try boiled chicken pieces mixed in with her food. I had a yorkie who did not want to eat anything. I bought her canned Wellness, the organic kind. It is high in protien which I think would be good for your momma dog. Then I would mix the chicken in with that, and she ate it all.

| I do have some canned wellness, it is one of the brands that I bought when I went to the pet store and I tried that, the science diet and the pro plan and she does not want any of them. I will try them with the chicken but I think she will just pick the chicken out as that is what she did when I mixed the boiled chicken with the dry puppy food. | Sadie must be between 6 and 7 weeks along now. This is the time when she really needs to eat well as this is when the pups do most of their growing. If you just can't get her to eat any dog food, well, just feed her something nutritious that she'll eat. A meat based diet will work if that's all she'll eat now. You can use chicken, turkey and beef liver. Scrambled eggs are very good, too. With the chicken or turkey, it doesn't have to be the breast. Leg quarters will work fine and are cheaper to buy. Just boil some up and remove the skin and bones. Save the broth and you can pour it over the food. Do the same with the beef liver. The liver is the most nutrient dense of all these foods and is very good for her. You can try adding in some dog food and the broth may get her to eat it. As the pups are now growing, her stomach may not be able to hold as much at one time so you may have to feed several smaller meals. It's very important that she eats well, though, and should be taking in about 1 1/2 times her normal amount at this time. Good nutrition now will help prevent problems come whelping time. Don't feed her a bunch of packaged meats as these can be heavily processed. Get fresh meat and cook it yourself. You can get some rice to add in with it and even mashed potatoes and that will give her some carbs.

| Why can't she have vegis, fruit and meat then? I mean be sure it is all dog safe foods-I can send you a list of foods not to feed...mine eat Taste of the Wild $25 for 15 pound bag ( I don't feed red meat it's too rich) but I also feed RAW to all my dogs for one meal a day at least...I don't do RAW meat I cheat on that by feeding Stella and Chewy's patties...or boiled chicken I know its not RAW but hey...also I have found chicken broth poured over kibble will make them down it-I use organic sodium, hormone free, free ranging broth though LOL the sodium/hormone free is what you need to watch for with a pregnant dog...that's how I finally got Elvis to eat kibble.

| When I went to the pet store she gave me some samples of the taste of the wild and I tried one of them with Sadie and she would not have anything to do with it. I am gonna try the chicken broth over the kibble and see if that will work. She will eat boiled chicken, she loves it. I know I am gonna have a fight on my hands after the puppies are weaned because then she is going back on the kibble no matter what it takes. I know that she needs the kibble for her teeth and she just wont have anything to do with it. I made her some hard boiled eggs yesterday and she ate them but not a lot. I think I will go to the store and get some beef liver but I am wondering how would I cook it for her? Boil it? Thanks to you all for all the help. |

| I would also consult with a vet. If she is prego.... she needs to be checked out.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Have you tried sprinkling a bit of grated Parmesan Cheese over her food? My dogs go wild for cheese.

| Well I went to the store and got her beef liver, skinless, boneless chicken breast and turkey. While I was cooking our dinner I also made some home made dog food. She likes the beef liver with the rice the best. I am so happy to say that she ate and she ate so well I thought she was going to bust. Needless to say she is sleeping now and I do not think she is getting up till morning. Thank you all for the great advice. I made a bunch of it and froze some so I will have it. After the puppies are weaned, she is going back on her regular food. I told DH that and he said sure she is, you spoil the dogs and I can see you in the kitchen cooking for them. I said well it is not like it is all that hard lol. I feel so much better now that she ate so good. |

That is wonderful. I know you are relieved. She needs extra pampering right now. Ha ha. Or at least that can be her excuse!

| She does not need an excuse, they, Sadie and Scooter, are both spoiled rotten. I am a stay at home Grandma, raising two of my grand daughters and they fill my empty day that is for sure. Scooter goes on the 15th to be fixed and Sadie will be fixed as soon as she can be after the puppies are weaned. This was not a planned breeding in any way and it will never happen again. I will be less stressed once she delivers and all are well. |
