Lulu ate her poop yesterday!!! Then for about 3 hours she threw it up!!! I called the vet and they told me to give her Pepto to settle her tummy and I did and it worked but EWWWWWW!!!!!!! Why is she doing this and how do I stop it????????? To think that I let her lick me in the face.... **gag**

I have read up here giving her a couple bits of pineapple. Should deter her from eating poopoo. Elsa hates pineapple and she is still eating her little babies(13 weeks) poop also. I try to check on the peepads often but never find poop. I know she is eating it. Good Luck.

I Have The Same Problem With One Of My Biewers. She Was At The Point Where She Would Try To Eat Others. My Vet Told Me To Change There Food. And I Have It Has Been Two Months Now And She Has Stop Doing That Bad Problem..

What brand did you change their food to? Scooter and Sadie both try to eat other dogs poo and it drives me crazy so maybe if I change their food they will also stop this.

I changed foods on my poop eater and Kinder still ate it. I learned on YT to give pineapple and it has worked for me. I take two chunks of unsweetened pineapple and chop it into small pieces and mix with her tablespoon of low fat Innova canned food. I do this three times a day and I feed her Fromm's chicken and the whitefish dry. It takes awhile but if you are consistent it works. If I stop the pineapple she goes back to eat her poop. I guess she gets her fruit everyday so I will keep doing this.Hope this helps. Susan

She is pad trained by about 80%. Mom is always behind her checking what she's doing. If she is anything like her momma it's going to be a long road in the potty training issue.

No she goes out side. We have a HUGE fenced in yard and evidently she was "snacking" while she was supposed to be doing her business... Also I have smelled poop in her cage but not seen any and this would be why... YUCK!

I have the same problem with my dogs not only do they eat dog poop they also eat cat poop and if one of my dogs vomit they will eat that also. Is this a complete gross out?

This is called Coprophagia,
and can be cause by a behavioral issue, or deficiency in the Dog’s diet.

Many Puppies eat their Mother’s poop, which is instinctual, considered completely normal, but Coprophagia can be found to exist with older Dogs as well.

Possible dietary deficiency aspects of coprophagia could be Protein/Carbohydrate ratios, Vitamin “B” deficiencies, a lack of Digestive Enzymes, or because they have intestinal parasites.

Dogs may possibly resort to this activity because of several influences, which include:
Being a subordinate member of “their” pack.
Learned behavior from another Dog,
As a result of Overfeeding (their attempt to recycle) to absorb missed nutrients.
As a result of hunger.
Their attempt at Housekeeping, via a concept of sanitation or fear of punishment.
An attempt to attract their Owners attention (regardless of negative “scolding” response).

Reasons as listed above, frequently are hard to analyze. There are a number of remedies to be found, from ingestion of Pumpkin or an Enzyme, to retraining. The fact remains that those approaches are only addressing the symptoms, and unless you can rule out some physiological issue by testing for vitamin deficiency or parasites, you may be putting your Dog in jeopardy.

Given that there may be a medical reason for this activity and in the best interest of the animal, Take it to the Veterinary, and have test done.

Now...
I just want to mention the levels of jeopardy, which your Dog will encounter.

If it has been eating its own, or, eating that of another Dog which you have control over, then the level of jeopardy is not all that great. “Control” meaning that your animals are able to be confined in an area which no other (strange) animal can access, and the Fecal Material available to it, it of it or the immediate Pack. And, when moving one of more out of that area, that you are able to keep them from contacting another animals Feces, and that means getting close enough to just give it a sniff !
Just don’t let that happen !

If you do, even just the slightest touch of their nose to material, and in some instances, even getting close enough to just sniff, is too close, and contamination can occur. You then allow it to rely completely on the Medical protection via previous inoculations, to combat any infection. Shots are very important, but not totally efficient, and sometimes ineffective. Again, just don’t let that happen !
