toothbrush What's a good toothbrush to use?? Do you share one between your babies or you have one for each?? What's a good toothpaste?? It is normal for them to have a little yellow...? Carmel and Emma's teeth are mostly white, but some yellow (very few) and the molars are not as white...Is that normal? |

No, I DO NOT share my toothbrush with her...on purpose. The other morning I got up, got dressed and went to brush my teeth. DH comes in and wants to start talking(like usual, always when I am in the bathroom) Anyway, I start brushing my teeth I noticed something wrong. I looked at my brush and it was Elsa's. I immediatley starting gagging and spitting and of course DH thought this was the funniest thing he has seen, told everyone... My vet said to use a just a dot of my toothpaste on her toothbrush. |
I also use a toddler brush. I don't share my brush with my dog but I do share a brush between the dogs. My vet told me to never ever use human tooth paste for a dog or a cat, it could make them really really sick. |

I thought the same thing so I questioned my vet 2x on this and his said if you use a microdot on the toothbrush then it wouldn't hurt. All's well so far. What tootpaste do you use? I heard that some doggie toothpaste really stinks. I have never tried them for that reason. |

You should never use human toothpaste on your yorkie. Human toothpastes may contain xylitol. If you are not aware of the dangers of xylitol, then look up xylitol toxicity in dogs. Even if the toothpaste doesn't contain xylitol, fluoride and other substances should not be swallowed. Dogs have to swallow toothpaste - humans don't. These substances can cause upset stomach or digestive disturbances. It also contains higher sodium levels than is safe for a yorkie. |
What's wrong with my vet? I am going to say something to him. Thank you guys, thank you so much for the info. |
My Heidi seems to be more comfortable with little bitty things coming toward her face. The larger toothbrush & thumb brush scared her so I got a pkg of those tiny disposable toothbrushes like you put in your purse... I washed out all the human toothpaste they put in them, applied some dog toothpaste and have gradually increased how long I brush them. She is getting where you can really go to town on them. Maybe after a while I can go to a little larger brush so I can get it done faster. |
I buy my toothpaste at Walmart, it's white with blue writing on the package. I can't think of the name, but it comes with a little blue rubber finger brush. Harley loves it, he goes mad when he sees me pull out the tooth care box, and sits pretty until I brush his teeth. It's only when I really scrub that he objects. It smells sort of like vanilla. Harley's teeth are pearly white! I brought him for a check-up before christmas and after I slacked off on brushing (I gave him some grain free dental chews... I know bad mom) and the vet told me that if I didn't brush his teeth every day I'd be paying for dental work ALOT sooner. Needless to say we scrub his teeth every day, and he has absolutely no visible plaque and no yellow on his teeth. Momma is now very proud of his smile! |
I try to keep up with brushing Oliver's teeth but I just recently bought him Blue Buffalo dental bones (mini size)....anyone ever tried them?? They're supposed to give them great breath, control tartar build-up and support joint and heart health which all sound good to me! :p Blue Buffalo healthy and natural dental chew bones |
I use baby colgate toothbrushes for my babies. Everyone has their own brush, and we change them regularly, just like I would with my own. We use Virbac CET dental vanilla mint enzymatic pet toothpaste. My dogs have always had excellent teeth and clean mouths with fresh breath as a result of good oral care. You need a vet to check the mouth at least annually and should go with their recommendations on dentals. As for yellow on the gum. I do not have that building up on my dogs' teeth. A chew item could help to remove some of it but it sounds like a dental may be in order by a veterinarian. |

By the way 107barney, the pee pads are adorable and lexie took to them so fast, thanks! |
Tibbe's toothpaste is an enzymatic dog toothpaste from Pet Smart, chicken flavored and he loves it. I found that the smallest actual toothbrush available in the D/FW, Texas area was actually a cat toothbrush. Actual bristle length about 1/2", height of bristles maybe a little less and has a long, angled red handle. Tibbe's little muzzle is too tiny for toddler toothbrushes or dog toothbrushes so we had to go "CAT"! No, I didn't tell him! |
I know you asked about the toothbrush but some groomers swear PlaqClnz. I have yet tried PlaqClnz but I will give it a shot to see how it works. Pearl goes to clinic to have her teeth cleaned every year and she is due to go in next month. PlaqClnz Pet Bad Breath Solution. Fresh Breath. Healthy Mouth, Happier Pet. |
I use thumb brush for presto, with chicken flavored paste. I would never use human tooth paste on him. He also has a breath spray which works when he doesnt want to be brushed and a liquid which you can mix with their water. I can get you specific names if you are interested. Roo |
