toothbrush What's a good toothbrush to use?? Do you share one between your babies or you have one for each?? What's a good toothpaste?? It is normal for them to have a little yellow...? Carmel and Emma's teeth are mostly white, but some yellow (very few) and the molars are not as white...Is that normal? |

No, I DO NOT share my toothbrush with her...on purpose. The other morning I got up, got dressed and went to brush my teeth. DH comes in and wants to start talking(like usual, always when I am in the bathroom) Anyway, I start brushing my teeth I noticed something wrong. I looked at my brush and it was Elsa's. I immediatley starting gagging and spitting and of course DH thought this was the funniest thing he has seen, told everyone... My vet said to use a just a dot of my toothpaste on her toothbrush. |
I also use a toddler brush. I don't share my brush with my dog but I do share a brush between the dogs. My vet told me to never ever use human tooth paste for a dog or a cat, it could make them really really sick. |

I thought the same thing so I questioned my vet 2x on this and his said if you use a microdot on the toothbrush then it wouldn't hurt. All's well so far. What tootpaste do you use? I heard that some doggie toothpaste really stinks. I have never tried them for that reason. |

You should never use human toothpaste on your yorkie. Human toothpastes may contain xylitol. If you are not aware of the dangers of xylitol, then look up xylitol toxicity in dogs. Even if the toothpaste doesn't contain xylitol, fluoride and other substances should not be swallowed. Dogs have to swallow toothpaste - humans don't. These substances can cause upset stomach or digestive disturbances. It also contains higher sodium levels than is safe for a yorkie. |
What's wrong with my vet? I am going to say something to him. Thank you guys, thank you so much for the info. |
My Heidi seems to be more comfortable with little bitty things coming toward her face. The larger toothbrush & thumb brush scared her so I got a pkg of those tiny disposable toothbrushes like you put in your purse... I washed out all the human toothpaste they put in them, applied some dog toothpaste and have gradually increased how long I brush them. She is getting where you can really go to town on them. Maybe after a while I can go to a little larger brush so I can get it done faster. |
I buy my toothpaste at Walmart, it's white with blue writing on the package. I can't think of the name, but it comes with a little blue rubber finger brush. Harley loves it, he goes mad when he sees me pull out the tooth care box, and sits pretty until I brush his teeth. It's only when I really scrub that he objects. It smells sort of like vanilla. Harley's teeth are pearly white! I brought him for a check-up before christmas and after I slacked off on brushing (I gave him some grain free dental chews... I know bad mom) and the vet told me that if I didn't brush his teeth every day I'd be paying for dental work ALOT sooner. Needless to say we scrub his teeth every day, and he has absolutely no visible plaque and no yellow on his teeth. Momma is now very proud of his smile! |
I try to keep up with brushing Oliver's teeth but I just recently bought him Blue Buffalo dental bones (mini size)....anyone ever tried them?? They're supposed to give them great breath, control tartar build-up and support joint and heart health which all sound good to me! :p Blue Buffalo healthy and natural dental chew bones |
I use baby colgate toothbrushes for my babies. Everyone has their own brush, and we change them regularly, just like I would with my own. We use Virbac CET dental vanilla mint enzymatic pet toothpaste. My dogs have always had excellent teeth and clean mouths with fresh breath as a result of good oral care. You need a vet to check the mouth at least annually and should go with their recommendations on dentals. As for yellow on the gum. I do not have that building up on my dogs' teeth. A chew item could help to remove some of it but it sounds like a dental may be in order by a veterinarian. |

By the way 107barney, the pee pads are adorable and lexie took to them so fast, thanks! |
Tibbe's toothpaste is an enzymatic dog toothpaste from Pet Smart, chicken flavored and he loves it. I found that the smallest actual toothbrush available in the D/FW, Texas area was actually a cat toothbrush. Actual bristle length about 1/2", height of bristles maybe a little less and has a long, angled red handle. Tibbe's little muzzle is too tiny for toddler toothbrushes or dog toothbrushes so we had to go "CAT"! No, I didn't tell him! |
I know you asked about the toothbrush but some groomers swear PlaqClnz. I have yet tried PlaqClnz but I will give it a shot to see how it works. Pearl goes to clinic to have her teeth cleaned every year and she is due to go in next month. PlaqClnz Pet Bad Breath Solution. Fresh Breath. Healthy Mouth, Happier Pet. |
I use thumb brush for presto, with chicken flavored paste. I would never use human tooth paste on him. He also has a breath spray which works when he doesnt want to be brushed and a liquid which you can mix with their water. I can get you specific names if you are interested. Roo |
I use oxyfresh again on savannah since I used this on my binky and she had amazing teeth even at 11 she never had a dental and one of my dog show friends got me started on this early in her life. I like it because its sugar free and if they fuss too much you can just rub it around on their top and bottom gum area. I also didn't buy that toothbrush they had listed though I was tempted...I opted to continue using the finger toothbrushes which is easier for one handed brushing that is for sure. I used to bathe binky once a week and use this oxyfresh every time. I did some some other stuff at the petstore last week but again I figured I'd stick with this since i think it really did work well for me in the past. My new tubes arrived yesterday I got one small one for my daughters pom and that large tube will last you eons it only takes a bit on that finger brush to get the job done. I consider it great success it got rid of savannahs horrible breath even this morning when she shared some kisses it was fine. I did use it again after she ate dinner hoping it will help her and read it was ok to use it as much as I wanted..then I'll go back to my once a week once she gets her dental done. scary for me my binky never had a dental and they always said what amazing teeth she had..lol Pet Care |

Joel has a Snoopy toddler toothbrush, and Petrodex toothpaste. I just do a mixture of using my finger with toothpaste for the back teeth and then use his toothbrush. His teeth are still white:D |
I use plaqu attack...maybe the water pik (Derik's). I tried the arm and hammer sensative brissle disposible because of the small round soft head (I recenrly started brushing with coconut oil) so far it is great and inexpensive. I have also tried some banana peel flesh (the inside part) great safe natural whitener. |

I use little kid toothbrushes of the yorkies since they have tiny mouths. Present brushes are Spiderman- Next is Barbie. Buddy gets a regular adult soft toothbrush- Blue, Black, Red. Any color but Pink since my toothbrush always is pink! They get regular baking soda and a little water to make there paste! |
I bought a baby toothbrush for Katie made by Radius. Thr handle is a little short but I find it is better than the ones made for dogs. |
I don't think the original poster intended her question to be interpreted as do you share your toothbrush with your dog. I think it is safe to say that most people (if not all) do not share a toothbrush with their dog. :p |
I use a small CET tooth brush for Callie and CET tooth paste. Yellow is tarter. |

The vet gave us a toothbrush. It's very small and has a little loop on the end for your fingers to slip in. Bailey isn't a fan of having his teeth brushed, but it's really not his call. ;-) |

worked out for her, she posed a year ago i beleive. |
I forgot to add what my vet dentist said she said the teeth all the way in the back are kind of on a curve so make sure you get those little guys hiding back there. She also suggested brushing daily or if you do it once a week to make sure you are putting something on there like oravet. Also yall please make sure you read the ingredients and make sure there is nothing toxic to dogs in it because there are things made for dogs that have stuff in them that are toxic. |
Dental Care for Yorkies ? These little guys often retain baby teeth which have to be pulled and that is the easiest thing about Yorkie tooth care. :D Routine dental checks by your Vet, to assess the bite and condition of a puppies teeth is only the beginning of life long care their teeth will need. Toy dogs are notorious for dental problems. Veterinarian Dentistry has really grown in the last decade. Things that were only for people are now routinely available for dogs too. Now we know more and most of us try to take care of our babies teeth. With good dental care most Yorkies can keep their teeth their whole life. My Vet recommends daily brushing with a soft child's tooth brush and dog tooth paste. Each pup needs their own tooth brush which should be replaced every 3 to six months. Only tooth paste made for dogs, should be used. Human tooth paste is not designed to be swallowed and cause a digestive upset. My Vet also recommends dental chews 3 times a week and professional teeth cleaning as needed. (Younger Yorkies seem to need dental cleaning about every 2 years or so. Older Yorkies probably yearly to avoid gum disease and tooth loss.) As a trainer I suggest beginning dental care from day one, just make it part of your routine grooming. :D |
