| Treating for fleas and ticks in winter Is it necessary to treat for fleas and ticks in the winter? I have really been wondering how everyone feels about this.

| Depends on your area. Usually fleas aren't a big enough issue in the snowy states to drug for the heck of it. Just check for them often. If Lyme's is a big problem in your area, then there may be some reason to go ahead with preventative.

| I'm in MD, like you, and I used to not give Jackson flea/tick and heartworm meds in the winter but this winter, he got 3 ticks in 3 months! I thought those suckers were gone by now but apparently not. My vet said to keep him on year round on both Frontline and Heartguard, so now I am going to. He already tested positive once for Lymes last year and luckily, a few weeks ago, he tested negative for everything so I wanna keep it that way.

| I keep Levi on flea/tick medicine year-round. I don't want to take any chances: I take him out in public often, he potties and plays outside even in the winter, I share my bed with him...I just don't want to risk anything!

| I stop flea meeds in the winter, from about October until March. That's about six months without it. I check them over to make sure they don't have any but I don't feel it's worth it to medicate for them. They stay on heart worm meds year round.
