Why on earth would someone put a "backyard breeder" tag on a new persons thread that came here looking for answers? Someone is very ignorant on the proper use of tags or am I missing something here? To the OP, you have been given some good advice. Please try to glean the good from the site and ignore the rest.

I had a member ask me to share my story on hear for when people asked about breeding so.

About two years ago now my uncle had this adorable little chihuahua mutt, Sugar baby she weighed maybe 12 pounds he used to let her run all over and of course she was not fixed because"that's too much money" and of course the classic"her and rocky don't like each other that way"Rocky is my grandmothers 29 pound Shetland sheep dog.
turns out they did like each other that way and just after Rocky's first birthday he mounted the little dog.The neighbors said her screams wear terrible.
well when Sugar baby had the puppies there wear 5 of them and they already weighed almost a pound at birth so she had nearly doubled he body weight while pregnant After the puppies wear born I got a frantic call from my 14 year old cousin (who was the dogs owner as much as a child ever really can be) and she said sugar baby was shaking really bad and she did not seem able to breath I rushed right over I took her to the emergency vet This cost me i cant quite remember but i think $200 the vet told me the stress of the labor had probably sent her into a seizure So with nothing else i could do i took her home.
A week later I got a call from cousin again in tears saying that her father dumped sugar baby and the pups in a parking lot because "she got aggressive with those pups" wouldn't you? so i got in my car went to the parking lot and saw the box of week old pups but no mom in sight The pups wear so cold i was sure they wear going to die I had my fried come with her van and take the pups to the vet (again on my dime)
while i stood out in the cold and called and searched for sugar baby finally after about 2 hours she decided to come to me I got her in my car and took her to the vet this trip cost even more money about $500 i think the pups had almost all ended up with pneumonia so i had to give them medicine for that every few hours by the end of the next week the puppies wear 2 pounds easy and some a little bigger mom could not feed them all after all put together they weighed more then she did so every two hours i had to feed at least 2 puppies maybe three if she was pushing them away
then come the time to worm and vaccinate that cost another 2-300 dollars finally by the time they wear 8 weeks old i had to let them go i was spending over $50 a month on dog food and i also went out and got them collars and leashes and stuffies and a chew toy for each one. that cost about $60. when all was said and done the $90 i made in re-homing them all did nothing to help ease the financial burden of raising them.

I am happy to say that a nice family came and adopted the whole family Mom and dad got Sugar baby (now named dinky) and her son bug-a-boo( bug) a older sister got one of the girls lizard (lizzie) an aunt got another girl Rockette (kept the name she liked it) and pixie and Gwen(again kept the names) went to a close family friend who is over all the time.
All the puppies with the exception of Rockette are fixed, when she went in she started seizing under the anesthetic and almost died twice.
I am happy to know that Sugar baby/dinky will never have to go through that again, and neither will her 4 beautiful girls

I agree -- that is not right. The OP has come asking questions BEFORE any breeding is done. We cannot run off people in research mode! This is what we tell them to do!

Poor Sugar baby!! I'm glad there was a happy ending. I can't imagine a poor pup screaming her head off because of something that could be prevented. :(

Deb, I would contact Ann or Admin about the tags. Maybe they could do something about it.

ladyjane 01-01-2011 11:49 PM

I would think anyone could just hit the little exclamation point and report it. I think the admin can actually see who is placing the tags. I remember something being said about him considering that. Seems there are people who think bad tags are useful. So immature imo.

Please reconsider breeding your girl. She is too young and you are too inexperienced. If you had read one book (just one!) on breeding, you would know the answer to these questions. You really shouldn't even consider breeding without doing the least bit of research. You are toying with your girl's life. Get yourself a mentor and start reading up about breeding. Good books to start with are Ann Seranne's The Joy of Breeding your Own Show Dog and Dan Rice's book on dog breeding. I hope that helps!

I think admin ought to have more control over tags. However, I found out when I got all upset about the tags on my review and some of my other threads that they aren't that effective or damaging. Sure it points people to certain threads but I couldn't tell you how many puppy inquiries I have had where the people say "Oh, we read that "stuff" about you and boy, those people are "fill in the blanks". Some people have made it their lifes mission to out people but when people know you, it just makes the posters look bad and basically "outs" them to show the kind of person they really are hiding behind computer screens. I wish I had a hundred puppies to sell instead of only one because the handful of people on here that have tried to damage me have seriously failed. Sure the new people and those in the "group" will believe anything without checking it out but those good, honest people know what to believe , But some of these tags are so ignorant. You can google YT and several lawyer sites come up about Yt, their tags and the way they let all this bad mouthing go on especially in the breeders section without controlling it. So admin needs to take more control on these things.

i googled and only found one site
and this is some of what i read

Just like here on lawyers.com, if somebody says something bad about me the website is not responsible for it nor is it obligated to remove.

It's just my tough luck because that's the risk I take by participating here.

If you are truly suffering loss of revenue you are welcome to sue the website and or the poster but you'll need a defamation lawyer and $5000 to $10,000 just to get him started

Unless you find one that will take it on a continugy (I can't spell that word) LOL like the one in Northern Kentucky that recently won a five million suit against a website for allowing things to be posted that damaged a person's reputation. And against several other people. it was all in the news recently. So no it's not just tough luck. It was in the chicago news but they did a story locally also, I think.

I would like to see the link to that. It must have been a website that had money OR insurance. No attorney is going to go after someone without assets. I see a lot of people threaten action but in most cases they just don't realize how hard it is to really do much. You have to prove loss of revenue...and there must be conclusive proof it was caused by the person being sued...AND there needs to be money involved...or no attorney is going to get involved on a contigency.

chachi 01-02-2011 11:26 AM

We have had people threaten to sue people on here or admin many times over the years it has usually been bad breeders upset with a review or something written about them on here. There is little to nothing that can be done and even an attorney thaT was on here said that. Jeff Dane was going to peoples emails threatening to sue them. Even if he had a case he would have had to prove the info given was false when it wasnt so he was just alot of hot air. We also had an attorney sue a breeder on her for defamation of character and she did not win her suit. This site is about education and part of that is letting people know info about breeders aqnd reviews of breeders. Just because a breeder doesnt like whats been written about them or is embarressed about what has been written about them doesnt mean that info is not accurate and info that can be exchanged on here

Rhetts_mama 01-02-2011 11:33 AM

The difficult part is proving damage to reputation. Just because someone says something unflattering about a person doesn't make it slander. The person doing the suing has to prove that the other person was malicious and knowingly spread untruths. Relating someone's bad experiences isn't slander. Saying that you got a sick pup from breeder X isn't slander. Saying that breeder X was rude, non-responsive or what ever doesn't meet it either. Saying that breeder X is feeding her sick puppies to the roaming alligators is ( if you know that she isn't.)

Exactly.

Yep! Some people use the sue word to try to stop people from talking. I guess in some cases it works. *shrug*
