Total Scare of my life!

This is long.

I just wanted to say to everyone that it only takes a second for something terrible to happen and to be very careful of their precious babies. Thankfully everything is okay but I wanted to share something that happened to me yesterday.

Yesterday I thought my world was over. Somehow or another I dropped Hot Rod on his back and he hit his little head on the tile floor. Oh my gosh! I thought I was going to die. He was flailing around and make horrible noises. I thought for sure he broke his back and was having a seizure. I had just given him his joint medicine and started to stand up from the chair with him in my arms and he started to jumpout, well I didn't want him to jump from there so I when to grab him and somehow caught his legs and I must have turned him upside down and down he went. it was about a 2 - 3' fall. I heard him hit the floor. I heard the thump on the floor and the tile. It was awful. and then I heard him crying out. All I could do was scream out his name over and over.

I didn't know whether I should attempt to pick him up or what. Somehow I got myself together and got him quiet and scooped him up and righted him. He was shaking and I was shaking and crying.

I called my husband right away and told him what happened and he wound up coming home and looked after him for a short while. Meanwhile I called YT'r Brendarash, who lives close to me and she calmed me down and just was wonderful as could be just being there for me to get myself together. Again, Thanks, Brenda!!! from the bottom of my heart. :)

In the meantime I called the vet and they told me what signs to look for. I felt that Hot Rod was not hurt as he was alert. I did put him down so I could watch him walk and he walked in a big circle fine. He came back over to me for me to pick him up and hold him. Whew! He even managed to give me a kiss.

I thought my world has crashed when I saw and heard him on the floor. I love him so much that it would just kill me if something happened to him and especially if I was the one who caused it. I just wanted to share this experience so everyone can make sure to be very careful...it only takes a split second for something to go wrong.

I realized that I don't have any recent pictures so I snapped this one today. Sorry, they need baths badly, lol Hug your babies and keep them safe!!!

LilPuppyLove 12-15-2010 07:01 PM

that is soo scary! I hope your babies are ok! That is one of my biggest fears about getting a small dog. They can get hurt so easily!

Ashley V 12-15-2010 07:09 PM

That is so scary! We had a similar experience with Chip. My cousin was holding Chip outside and Chip wanted down to play but my cousin wasn't letting him down. Just as my cousin went to put him down, Chip jumped, fell, and hit his little leg on the concrete. He screamed and started trying to run and kept falling over. I grabbed him up real quick and started screaming for my husband to get in the car cause we were rushing him to the vet... but hubby being insanely calm as he was told me to put him down and Chip started walking around just fine. I was so scared when that happened thinking he broke his leg, but he's fine. So glad Hot Rod ended up okay!!!

DvlshAngel985 12-15-2010 07:09 PM

Hugs to you and the pups! I'm glad everything turned out ok.

Yorkiedaze 12-15-2010 07:12 PM

I know just exactly how you felt. When my deceased Yorkie, Delsi was only 4 months old and weighed only a little over one pound, I picked her up and put her up to my shoulder to take her outside and she just gave a push off over the back of my shoulder and landed head first on the metal door jam, and that was a four foot drop. She was knocked out and we rushed her to the Vet. but she woke up on the way. They found nothing wrong with her on the x-rays.
These little ones sure can stand a lot of pounding sometimes.
I'm so happy your baby is fine. He knows it wasn't your fault, and it sounds like he's still trying to cheer his mommy up. ;)

lynnelily 12-15-2010 07:15 PM

wow that is so scary I'm glad he's alright.

Fancy_Pants 12-15-2010 07:19 PM

:hug:Big hugs to you both. I'm sure glad everything turned out okay.

yavenay 12-15-2010 07:23 PM

I am so glad Hot Rod is okay. I remember I had a scary one myself. Brandi had started choking one time. I thought I was going to panic I was so scare but somehow in the mist of all this, I managed to calm down and stick my finger in her mouth and pull out what was choking her. I actually was more scared about sticking my finger in her mouth because I was afraid I would do more harm then good but I couldn't let her choke without me trying to do something. So after that little scare, I did a little researc and bookmarked an article called "What to do when your Dog is Choking" as well as other medical emergency tips for pets.

QuickSilver 12-15-2010 07:25 PM

Oh my goodness, that is REALLY scary!

I had something like that happen with Thor, though not as serious. He decided to jump out of my arms while I was carrying him, and at the same time, I tried to adjust his position. I dropped him headfirst onto this super-hard outdoors tile, like harder than cement. I had this split-second vision of him cracking his little back on that ground. But he actually did a full 180 degree turn in the air, nose over tail, and landed on his feet completely unharmed. It would have been amazing if I hadn't felt like vomiting.

megansmomma 12-15-2010 07:25 PM

What a scare you had with Hot Rod! I want to cry if one of mine accidentally gets a toe stepped on. I'm so glad that everything turned out and he is fine

Maximo 12-15-2010 07:35 PM

Bo, your post gave me chills. Terrifying! I am so relieved for you that your little Hot Rod is fine. Give him extra hugs from me, Max and Teddy.

Beautiful picture of your kids. Enjoy your holidays!

Britster 12-15-2010 07:35 PM

Soooo scary! *hugs* I am just so glad everything is okay with little Hot Rod.

I remember when Jackson was a little pup, he was probably still only around 5lbs, I did basically the same thing but did not cause such a huge reaction. I was holding him when he decided to leap and he fell sooo hard on the floor, and he did a really loud yelp like five times in a row. I looked him all over, called the vet and all, and he was fine within 2 minutes and back to himself, but oh my how guilty I felt!

Yeah me too. She doesn't even have to me hurt for me. Shoot I want to cry and scoop Brandi and hold up if she starts shaking too much because it's cold or when she gives me that puppy dog look when I have to leave to go somewhere and she can't go with me. Do we have it bad or what?

capt_noonie 12-15-2010 07:41 PM

OMG my heart was racing (and still is!) reading that! I'm so glad he's ok.

I too dropped Uni when she was about 4 months. it was while she was still going thru potty training, and I would get up several times during the night. This time I was holding her in one hand and fumbling to get my glasses on with the other. I guess I pushed on her bladder or something causing her to try to move and she fell out of my hand. She landed on carpet, but from our bed which is really high up and she was screaming and screaming. I thought for sure her arm was broken. I set her down a few minutes later and she still wasn't putting her paw down, but when I went to squeeze it and move it around she didn't scream, so I knew it was just sprained and not broken. Boy was I scared that day though.

enchilila 12-15-2010 07:51 PM

I am so glad Hot Rod is OK! What a scare! I know from experience it doesn't take long for an accident to happen. You know how excited our little ones can get when we have been gone most of the day. Betty Boop decided to try and jump into my arms and her back feet slid out from under her and she hit her head on my kitchen TILE floor! She just laid there limp for a minute. She was unhurt, though. I wish I didn't have tile floors. Now my husband wants to put wood floors in our den this next spring. I can see that as an accident waiting to happen. May need to get her some little booties!

concretegurl 12-15-2010 07:57 PM

So sorry, glad everything is okay. It's times like this that make us realize how fragile our babies can be and how quickly tragedy can strike, even if you absolutely safety proof everything something as common as holding your baby can become a danger in a split second. I hope you don't feel bad at all about it-accidents happen, there is nothing that could have been done to avoid it. Really glad I read your post and go to see the pics of your fur babies they are so adorable I love the short cut with the wispy ears that is too cute!

CouversMom 12-15-2010 07:58 PM

How scary!! I'm glad to hear that he ended up being fine, but I totally understand that feeling :(

We were at the dog park a few months ago, and Khloe got ran over by a bigger dog. She was on her back yelping and writhing in pain. I was sure she had broken her back, so I picked her up and ran out of the park. When we got out of the park, I decided to set her down to see if she was okay, and she was fine... Luckily she was not hurt. Things can happen so quickly...

Give Hot Rod kisses for me... He's one tough cookie!

I was petrified of hurting Hot Rod when he came home to us as he was only 1.57 lbs. I thought for sure I would break him. He's 5.3 lbs now and it still worries me that he's so fragile.

So glad everything turned out okay. Don't you just love how we are so emotional and our hubbies are just so down-to-earth, matter of fact? When I spoke with my husband, I remember trying to tell him what happened between sobs and he was like, "he's fine, he's fine". That's a good thing they are on such an even keel though...it would be useless if they would fell apart too. :D

Thanks, it was really scarey and something that I don't ever want to experience again as I know Hot Rod doesn't either!

I would have been a basket case! I know when Hot Rod was a baby I was so scared to pick him up. I can't imagine if he'd a taken a fall...I would probably have had a heart attack. So glad she was okay.

Thank you. That makes 4 of us!

Pinky94 12-15-2010 08:48 PM

Thank God he's ok!

My puppy is 4 months and she squirmed out of my mom's arms last week while my mom was standing and hit the floor. I wasn't home which is good bc I would have freaked out. I lectured my mom about having a firm grip on her at all times. These puppies are too fearless at times!

that had to have been really scary. I know Maggie has swallowed her bully and gotten it caught. She let out the loudest whimper-cry that you could imagine. Fortunately it expelled. So glad Brandi is okay.

You and me both! This was about the most horrible thing that I could even imagine. Hopefully, he and I both learned from this and will not go thru something close to this ever again!

I bet you were scared...it's so easy for something to happen to these babies. So glad Uni is all better now. :)

Awww, poor wittle Betty Boop! Glad that everything worked out. At least hardwood floors are less hard than tile. I bet that moment you were waiting for her to move seemed to take forevvvvver.

I'm glad he is ok. It's terrible when something like that happens. It's not something you ever forget or really get over.

MauiGirl 12-15-2010 11:07 PM

Oh thank goodness he's ok. Our little ones can sure give us a scare sometimes.

Lisa and Pic 12-16-2010 02:25 AM

Oh, glad to hear that he is okay and how very scary. Sending hugs to a great fur mom.....

MaddiesMommie 12-16-2010 02:54 AM

Oh :( that story was making me sick. I wanted to just skip to the end and find out he was okay. I am so glad everything ended well and ((hugs)) to you for having such an experience.

He even had a kiss for him mama, so no worry about hard feelings there ;)

jacquelinebabco 12-16-2010 04:23 AM

So glad Hot rod is ok. The same thing happened to me about a week ago. Wyatt jumped from my arms and went flat on his back on the hardwood Floor. I think I was crying before he hit the floor. I was sure he had broken his back or neck. He jumped up and ran to the living room and I knew we had avoided a tragedy. It can happen so quickly to anyone no matter how careful you are.

Sweet Apple 12-16-2010 04:43 AM

ewwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeee Bo, I'm so glad your little guy is o.k...I know your little ones are your world!

SophieKatesMom 12-16-2010 04:52 AM

Oh my goodness, thank goodness Hot Rod is okay - these little guys are so slippery sometimes. Give him a hug and a kiss for me and maybe a hug for yourself.
