Digging at bedding? Anyone else's Yorkie dig at their bedding before nighttime? Piper sleeps with me and it never fails...every night when she gets in bed she'll scratch and dig at the bedding. She isn't moving any of it around to create a nest or anything, it's so strange. She'll do the same with blankets and stuff as well. |
Yup I think most of these yorkie's do this.. I am on my bed now and a couple are nesting right now..I love it and love watching them get all comfortable.. Your not alone... |
OH definitely! And heaven forbid you try to help them get comfortable. That just starts the whole process over. :) |
Yes, Lily does this ALL the time whenever she lays down. The couch, the bed everywhere! :) |
Yep both of my dogs do this. |
YEPPER!!! That would be our Madds... I was getting worried that she was going to hurt herself or something. She is so intense when she does this you can tell she is working every muscle in her body to the extreme. But sounds like it is very normal behavior. Peggy, Monkey & Maddie :daisy: |
Count Ruby in too!!:) |
Coco does this all the time! Sometimes she'll even do it on command! If she'll be standing on the bed I start saying, "dig, dig, dig, dig, dig!!!" Then she'll start going crazy! It's so funny and cute to watch. |
Ya my Roxie does the same thing every night its so cute watching her and she circle's her "area" to make sure its comfortable enough to sleep lol. |
All my dogs do this, but each one does it slightly differently. This behavior is part of the denning instinct in dogs - they like to prepare a spot where they will rest and it is instinct to do this. Terriers (and some other breeds) are more prone to burrowing behaviors. This means the dog is preparing his den and getting ready to rest. Some dogs will gather toys and resources in their dens. My dog Barney prepares his spot each night by going down off our bed to his toys and taking his nylabones up one by one to his spot. He places them down, then he circles and digs his spot and then he lies down to rest. It's like when we fluff up our pillows for ourselves. |
LOL. Too funny. Thanks for the info! |

my fife would do it only on clean sheets, good way to make sure my house keeper changed them. |
Every dog I've had has done this. It cracks me up. It's as if they look at the spot and decide that it doesn't look right, then they proceed to dig and nest to get things "just right." Then, even though they have moved or changed absolutely nothing, it is suddenly perfect and more comfy and the new-and-improved spot. |
All 3 of mine do it, we notice Baxter and Cooper doing it on nights we think they are "overly tired" or if we have new, clean sheets on the bed, maybe they don't smell right to them??? LOL Darcy will even paw and dig at the carpet, or the kitchen floor before she lays down. I always wonder what, exactly is she adjusting?? :D |
Poppy does this too its so cute. xxx |

Rhia LOVES to do this! On the couch with her blanket, on the bed, on the chair behind my computer chair, etc. She usually will bring in her favorite teddy bear toy or monkey toy and curl up with them once she figures out if it is comfortable enough. |
digging Belle has done this since we got her at 2 pounds. She does it on the couch, in her crate, on her blankets and especially in our bed. Sometimes she will dig to "bury" a toy or biscuit. She gets it just right then uses her nose to pack in down. When she's done she looks at me and once in awhile just to be a pain, I'll say, "I can see it!", then she has to start all over again. Fun to watch:rolleyes: |

Both Zach my yorkie and Zoe my shorkie do this every night and you're right, if you try to help them they give you a dirty look and start all over. |
Marley does this. She sleeps in the bed with me and every night she digs at the mattress before she lays down! Lol |
all dogs do it, it's like us fluffing our pillow, gotta get comfy, don't want a lumpy bed |

Isn't this something from the wild...think I read that - where wild animals turn around three times to help pack down the brush for a bed. |

Bitsy does this also, she is so intense when digging, like she is really determined! |
Count my Rex in too! He loves making his little nest at night...love it! |
;) I am just seeing this thread and I agree, I think it's an instinct that they have. Toto seldom does this but she does check to make sure all her "things" are in place. She sits next to me and when I raise my head to see what she wants, she reaches up and gives me 2-3 sweet little kisses smack on my mouth and I tell her "nite-nite". She immediately curls up next to me, I cover her with one of her little blankies and in moments she is snoring. It is a precious little routine!:thumbup: |
Ditto here as well. We got Buddy a new pillow and he loves to "dig" it for a while and then it's off to sleep! |
