both my shelties and Piper do this. I read on an AKC newsletter on the question forum that they supposedly do this dating back to their beginning existence before they became domesticated that they would move around in circles and flatten the grass that they were going to lay on, so it's supposedly an instinct thing. Just repeating what I read - but it makes sense. |

Yes indeed, all my dogs do this. My cocker/golden mix actually helps pull down the bed at night (flips the decorative pillows off the bed with her nose and helps push and pull down the comforter)! We sometimes say, "there they go, trying to get to China again". I think it's funny when they work for so long, lay down and quickly realize it's not "just right" and they start again in a new spot! |
Oh yes! I'm so glad to see so many others who also experience the lack of being able to help them...I have (despite knowing better) so many times attempted to fix their blankets, beds, etc for them only to get a dirty look and have them start all over again! But honestly it will never make sense to me why they do it on the flat surfaces like my couch, or the dog beds that have no give etc...weirdo wild beasts I suppose! |
Jasmine always 'digs' at my blanket. This means let me in. So, on cue, I lift my blanket so she can get under it and then she is done with her digging for the night. Prissy, our toy poodle, doesn't 'dig' at all before retiring. I guess differences in breeds. |
MIne do this as well. They dig, dig, circle, circle then dig, dig again and then do 3 circles and then finally lay down, and let out a big sigh |
