The AKC doesn't register mixed breeds, but you can enroll a mixed breed in the Canine Partners Program and only if the mix is spayed or neutered, which will allow you to compete in agility and obedience trials. There is the PAL/ILP, Purebred Alternative Listing/Indefinite Listing Priviledge registration. This is for purebred dogs, or dogs thought to be, that are spayed or neutered to be registered for performance events. The difference would be, for example, in the case of my Italian Greyhound puppy, who came from a store, and is ACA registered. She is a purebred, albeit not greatly bred, and I will be getting her ILP so I can come in agility events, obedience events, and ANY other AKC events, which would be lure coursing, that an Italian Greyhound can come in. Mixed breeds can not compete in lure coursing events. From what I have read on the CKC website, you can breed and register the puppies of a dog you get a CKC registration on whether the parents of said dog were registered with CKC or not. No way you can do that with the AKC.

My opinion is the only registration for yorkies in the US that means anything is AKC. The AKC tried to implement soem restrictions years ago to make it harder for poor breeders to continue with slipshop recordkeeping and sloppy breeding practices. Many of those breeders banded together to develop some of these other "registries" that are now rampant. You will find puppymills using CKC, ACA, etc. rarely AKC. As several already said, AKC is not a guarantee of an ethical breeder and the fact that a breeder uses one of the worthless registries does not mean they are a heartless puppymill. But..... if registration is important to you, you should go for the registry that means the most, that actually puts restrictions on breeders, and puts money back into education and protection.

It's all a matter of how what you think of when defining the word "registration." By definition, the term fits their program, even though it is not being used in the same context most of us think of when we hear the word in reference to dog. Is it misleading? Very much. Probably intentionally, IMO. You could just as easily use the words 'enroll' 'participate' 'sign up for' and it would mean the same thing. Last edited by BamaFan121s; 10-08-2010 at 06:57 PM. | |

| Donating YT 2000 Club Member | If you want a pet you can find a good Ckc. I have a girl that is and I would put her up against any of my akc. She is one of my first and very special to me. I wouldn't trade or for all the AKC in the world.
