| I think too a dog that is kept in a short cut will get cold before a dog in full coat (hair that grows from the dog, not what you put on the dog!). My dogs' feet get cold too, so they're all getting boots for this Winter!

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | My boy is pretty hardy, you can see him dressed up in his winter gear in my album. I don't put boots on him until the "salt" is laid down, but his winter coat goes on, when the temp drops below 45 degrees Fahreniheit about 6 Celsius or so. We do tend to walk quickly, and we play fetch and stuff on route. I've only ever seen him shiver, his first winter we got him as he was 13 wks old or so. Then I didn't have all the gear, so when hubby and I walked all the doggies, I'd pick him up when I saw him shivering, and put him in my jacket! That was a real cold winter though. Next winter he was just fine in his winter wear

| I think we will be in the house during the cold weather. Bailee is now 9 months old and doesn't like sweaters. He says there is no way he is wearing a sweater or coat.

| We personally are already doing sweaters on some mornings... I get cold easy b/c of some medications I am on and I can not stand to see them without something covering them up if I want my arms covered. Of course, if they showed signs of being too warm I would take it off but that doesn't really happen! I love this cooler weather we are getting. Sitting outside with a blanket and them on my lap while sipping morning coffee. I don't want to wish my life away but I can tell you that this will be a hot activity for me and my furbabies if I ever get to retire!!! Peggy, Monkey & Maddie

I've started putting sweaters on Rhett and Scarlett, they fought at first, but are doing much better now. It's down right cool here in the morning (the truck said 35 this morning) but it's still warming up beautifully during the day.

I've been putting a sweater or at least a shirt on Levi when we go out in the mornings and at night because it has felt chilly - it's been around 50F here (which I believe is around 10C), and that is chilly to me! The high tomorrow is still 85, but the mornings and evenings have been so cold!

| YT Addict | Hi everyone, it's been awhile! Oh good, I've found the thread I've been dreading to make myself for the last month and a half! ^_^ Well, this is Alaska...and we've just had snow today and then it cleared up which makes it that much colder here at night. (We've got to be in the low 20's Fahrenheit by now) Jenna has been content to go outdoors with me until it started getting dark before her evening potty time. She's been used to the all night daylight for months now...and alas...it is gone. And with it the warm weather. Early afternoons are still okay for her first elimination, but that light doesn't last and it'll get down to maybe an hour or so of it by solstice in December. Temps by then could be -40 or worse. Being only part Yorkie (possibly part chihuahua or min pin) she has less fur on her than most full bred Yorkies I've seen, however, she will NOT wear a coat. Or booties. And outside of just holding her in the air off the porch and telling her to let 'er rip twice a day...what should I do to keep her warm? I'm worried her little paws are going to frostbite because she just wants to walk and walk and I'm already shivering and my teeth chattering and begging her to get back inside after two minutes! And when I pick her up, coat or no, she IS shivering and obviousy chilled...how much cold can one of these little dogs take? I stick her inside my jacket to warm up as I walk her back home. Luckily we're on a dirt road so no salt necessary, but that means slushy mud while we go through freeze-up and melt so I'd like to find her booties like the sled dogs wear, but more her size. Still not sure how I'll convince her to wear them though. Any advice is appreciated! After being mom to several large huskies for many years, I am not sure at all how to proceed with this little one. Although I have briefly considered teaching her to use a litterbox like the cats. |

| If you are taking her outside, you need to put a coat on her. Those temperatures are way too low not to! And because she is kept inside for most of the day (I assume), she is probably very keen for a run-about when she gets outside. If you want to allow her to go outside when it's that cold, definitely get her a coat. If you want to keep her inside for most of the bad weather, invest in some washable pee pads and teach her to go on these. I don't like the kitty litter idea because it smells and I've never heard of someone who successfully taught their yorkie to use one. But pee pads are great and mine use them. I wouldn't have an 'inside' dog without pee pads or at least an inside potty spot. Hope that helps
