@ Brister. These are things I've experienced! I'm not just an outsider looking in. I've been around Pomeranians & MOST are NON STOP barkers. & that chihuahua thing is not a stereotype! My friend's Chihuahuas were TERRIBLE! ( god rest their souls ) it wasn't because they weren't socialized or anything that's just how they were! They were mother & daughter...but I called them the terrible twins. When I came to her house they would literally follow me while barking, ill sit down & they're still barking or if I got too close to my friend they'll go off. & I've known them for YEARS. This pretty much applies to everyother Chi that I've met. & I'm NOT saying that ALL yorkies are sweet little angels....there's always goin to be a few bad apples in a bunch. Like I said I'm saying this stuff from experience....I TRUTHFULLY only met 1 Yorkie that's was very vocal & snappish & over protective. I GUESS for every bad tempered yorkie there has to be 2 well mannered yorkies to make up for the breed cause like I've said I've only met 1 from a LOT. & I said calm not lazy or a couch potato! Lol. I understand the characteristics of a terrier. I like the fact that yorkies are hyper, I'm a pretty active person myself. So I don't really want a dog that I can out play. If I wanted lazy pet ill just stick with my cat.

I have three & two are VERY vocal! One never really barks unless she's been startled, but Yorkies can be extremely vocal!
Camden is very protective & territorial, so you never know! They don't call them terriers for nothing!
We have one that is a couch potato. In fact I think she wakes up every day and hopes that today is the day when we are going to sit on the couch 24/7 and never go anywhere so she can sit in our lap.
We have one who would like to go outside and investigate what's going on about every 5 seconds & one in between!
You will find Yorkies from one extreme to the other and I'm sure if you do enough reading on here, you will see all the different personalities that exist!
I have heard that Maltese are a calmer dog, but I don't know that first hand.
I had an all white dog for 16 1/2 years, he was an American Eskimo and he was gorgeous and just the best dog!

Well you seem like you have your mind set on getting a yorkie. No use defending yourself from other people's advice and justifying your reasons for getting a doggie! You know what you want, so good luck with your search and I hope you find the right pup to love when you're really ready.

I agree with shodanusmc maybe now is not the right time. You could consider pet sitting and see how that works or you could volunteer at a shelter. You sound like a very bright and caring individual you will know what is right for you. Good Luck!

Well I feel like I definately do want a yorkie,.... but not right now. I'm going to wait until next summer. That seems like the best time. Ill be home for a few months so I can COMPLETELY devote my time to him....or her. Lol. Ill have alot more time to learn more about this breed.

Wow.... I'm a little insulted by your response. I'm not telling you to do anything. You asked for advice, and I shared what I did. That's the best I could do. Having just been there myself, with aspirations to be a vet too, I told you what I honestly thought and how I went about it. Turns out the vet profession isn't for me. How could someone that is allergic to even the "hypoallergenic" dogs going to survive owning her own animal clinic? Plans change regardless of what stage in life you are in. I'm lucky to have had so many wonderful people help me along, and find a job I really enjoy doing.

If waiting seems right to you, then wait. Oh and FYI, I didn't get a puppy. I know the first year of life is very expensive, and I didn't have the money nor the experience to raise a puppy. Kaji was a year old; done growing and he is who he was going to grow up to be, which is mellow soul. I had no job when I got him, got a part time, lost it, and just now am getting back on my feet. In an odd way it worked out well. Nothing is set in stone, life is always changing. The only thing you have to be sure of is your undying love and dedication your willing to give your little one. No matter how much life changes; no matter if you get him/her today, tomorrow, next summer or in 5 years, you better believe the only thing that needs to stay constant is your willingness to love your pup unconditionally for the rest of its life.

I really didn't mean to insult you. I was just a lil confused by ur post. Just a lil misunderstanding. & I feel like we are kinda on the same page. Yea life is always changing.....you can never be sure of what's going to happen. But there is one thing that I am sure about.....I will definately love this yorkie forever! I don't take getting a yorkie lightly.

I'm totally new around here, but I didn't get my first dog until 32, and I probably should have waited a little longer still, lol, jk. Did you mean vet tech? If you meant vet, that's a brutal schedule, almost like studying to be a medical doctor. Or with a vet tech, you'd probably be working full time eventually, no? I could barely hang on to my cats in my twenties, I did mostly, and my awesome mom took some in thank goodness, but you are young, I might wait a bit. Life gets pretty fast when you don't expect it... But in a while when your life is more settled, you sound like you'd be a great dog mama with all the research and time and consideration you're taking to make the decision. I wish you luck!

I think that life changes for everyone no matter what. I'm going through some unexpected life changes myself, but whatever I do, my kids and my Furbaby are taken into account, first and foremost. I'm taking online classes so that I can be with my kids and my Furbaby more. I make my grocery trips and other errands that aren't pet friendly as short as possible, and rush home. I only go to my friends' houses that allow me to bring Khloe and my kids. And I don't regret it at all. People laugh because they never see me in public without my Khloe, but she is like my child and must be protected and loved. The decision is as critical as the decision of having a child. When my kids graduate high school, we will still have our Furbaby to love and take care of. That doesn't just go for Yorkie owners, it goes for pet owners in general. A helpless life is in your hands, and through the changes of life and everything else, you are all that is has.

Getting a new puppy might not be the best idea for you, maybe you should look into getting a yorkie that is about a yr old, so when you leave for school for up to 7 hours they can be at home and they can hold their pee in. If you get a puppy You will have to come back every hour and let them out to go potty because they can't hold it. Unless you get one during the summer time and you can train potty train them. I have a yorkie and about once a week she stays home alone for 7-8 hour because there is noone to watch her. I say if you really want one get one, I don't encourage this but just say you don't go to school or you go 3-4 hrs every other day!!(HIHI) they are the most lovable dogs and I love mine but they need a LOT of attention...it is very difficult when I'm doing school work and Dori wants to play.

I was working as a vet tech when i got pnut. I worked 6 days a week 12 hour days. I did have dh help me take care of pnut but i mostly did everything. If you really want something you will find ways to make it work. Life is too short not to. Hard work pays off.

Great post! I would just change it to say, "do what you feel is best for the yorkie - not yourself.
