Disgusted, outraged, insulted!
 

So I was joyously walking Hugo Versace Fendi Oquendo (Hugo VFO) down the street in Manhattan, NY. This woman walks up to me and discusses how precious my boy is. Of course, I was flattered and happy that someone would appreciate my son. However, then the storm clouds started (figuratively speaking) she began to tell me about my son's faults:

1) He is way too big to be considered a Yorkie by any standard (Hugo V.F.O. is 6lbs)
2) Hugo VFO does not meet the breed standard with regard to his color
3) Hugo VFO's legs are too long to be a yorkie.
4) I should demand a full refund for him
5) She then discuss how a real Yorkie should weigh 2.5 - 4lbs as only smaller Yorkie meet the breed standard
6) She said that my son was a half breed (UGH) and was sold to me under false pretenses!

What infuriated me the most was the air of superiority that she discussed this with me. I was floored at her imposition of her opinions of my baby. I asked her where she got her information from and she said that she has been a breeder for years and has shown her "real" Yorkies in many shows. Furthermore she mentioned she was the board member of some weird Yorkie organization.

I was just so overtly insulted and disgusted by this woman's disposition and the audacity to impose her beliefs (wrong nonetheless). I am a true New Yorker, so I gave her some colorful language (I am too embarrassed to mention them here) and sent her on her merry way.

WOW this took over a week to get off my chest! Thanks YT! Hey , have any of you guys experienced this?

Similar situation happened to me when i took my gorgeous boy to a pet store few years back, and these 2 old ladies came to me same way it happened to you , they claimed to be show breeders of another breed and yorkies and asked me if my boy was pure because he actually looked way to big and they did not wanted to offend me to just say he was a mix. My boy is a gorgeous all standard looking 5 pounds, blue and gold, nice conformation even to his age, perfect ears and baby face. Of course i have nothing to do with the big hair, he proudly wears a very fashionable puppy cut , but he was pointed out as a "short haired yorkie" and we all know there is no such thing, he was trimmed to my very own choice of hair trim.
I dont usually share this episode, but if it will make you feel better you are not alone. To those 2 old ladies and the lady who met you i have only one thought, they must envy yorkie owners and were never able to get one for themselves.

Ugh.... yes... unfortunately I have.... I live in NYC also and have had sooooo many people say " isn't he too big to be a yorkie? ( He's 7 pounds) "oh but he's not a teacup right? "- everyone has something to say about his size. So utterly annoying. I roll my eyes and walk away- remember in NYC there are some real characters- I would have asked the lady- really? Where's your yorkie then. Ugh- you know what it's better to just walk away from people like that. At the end of the day you are going home with your beautiful baby :) Just ignore those people.

Hugo is a bit of a celebrity here ( well at least I like to think he is) cuz he goes to support his daddy for his acting gigs and artists events, so I am always asked what his name is so I have shortened it to Hugo VFO and on Facebook, where I always am writing about our adventures he is known as Hugo VFO

I swear one of these days I'm going to have a bunch of business cards printed up but instead of my name etc., on one side I'm going to have the breed standards listed, copied directly from AKC. Then when some "expert" tells me my 6 pound girl is too big to be a real Yorkie I can just hand them the card and tell them they should really check their facts. on the other side I'll put one of my favorite sayings...."Better to be silent and have others think you are a fool than to open your mouth and confirm it"

Awesome!!!!!! You should do that. I'd love to chip in and have some cards for myself. I know I have a way off standard yorkie, but all people seem to focus on is his freakin size. He's 7 lbs, still within standard. If they would mention something about his soft coat, that's ok; his floppy ears, I could deal with; but when they pick on his size, the only thing that is "standard" about him, that makes me want to blow my lid sometimes.

Hugo VFO's dad, YOU ROCK! That crazy lady needed to be put in her place. I've heard some show people prefer a yorkie with long legs. Gives them a better basis to show off a luxurious coat. :D
I'm sure you've never heard the "what is that?" remark from people. I have; to which I have proudly responded, "He's a yorkie/pit bull mix. I can't wait for him to grow!" :devils2: Hey, a stupid question deserves a stupid answer. :p

Gosh, some people. Here's my question -- what does she do with her yorkie babies that aren't "real yorkies". You know what I mean, the "runt" of the litter or the one without the perfect legs. Geesh, some people are just rude!

Unfortunately ignorance is wide-spread! The first thing that would have come out of my mouth would have probably been..."How dare you...!!!!!" Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire!

Wow. I've not encountered that yet and I'm really hoping I don't have to. I not from NYC, I'm a Southern Belle, but I can SURE as a fire cracker go off.. Down here "Bless your heart" really means "Go F**K Yourself." Then, you smile and continue on your way.

to the OP. i think that's just ridiculous that she'd even have the nerve. i see off standard dogs every single day at the vets, i see them dragging tiny little things by the neck and all kinds of things wrong...do i go tell them their wrong NOOOOO it's rude and not my place. so why does she thinks she's got the right to talk to you about your "standard" dog the way she did...she's a complete dumba$$ and we all know it now.

I would have said "of course he's not a teacup, teacup is the fancy name given to the runts of the litter to sell them better" or "Of course, he's not a teacup, my teacup collection is in my cabinet for display only"

I get a lot of the "He's a big Yorkie!!" stuff, but nobody is ever rude about it, if they were... ohhh I don't even know what I'd do but I'd be pissed!

When I seen the title, for a fast "NY Minute", I thought it was directed at me! Glad to see it was not. What can you expect when you walk the streets of Manhattan, NY? Sounds like you have a great little dog, and would not lose a minute of sleep over what a "Street" person told you.

As a fellow New Yorker I must say there are some crazies out there and I'm glad you gave it to her. I know I would have too!!!:D

I just don't know why people can't just say "aw cute baby" and walk away. Geeez!!

That's really sad... It's a shame that people can't just be nice to each other... too many have problems that make them need to lash out at others, for some reason it makes them feel better to inflict pain and misery on total strangers.

How hard would it be to say 'What a beautiful little dog!' and just go on her way? The only thing I can figure is this woman must have been hurt the same way by someone at some time in her life, so she feels the need to pass it on.

Not that this is an excuse for her, there is no excuse for poor judgement nor bad behavior.

When I first joined YT, I was worried how my dog would measure up to everyone else's dogs. But now, after reading so many stories... it's not at all about what they look like (except the show/breeding forums)... it's more about how they make us feel, the love they give us and their ability to teach us how to love them back.

Totally agree with you. Maxine is everything to us, but she is no show dog or even an example of the breed standard. She has short legs, a little beer belly, and roundish.....and weights now close to 7 pounds, but has never been overfed and always exercised, it is just how she is. I pity the poor fool who would say anything negative about her to my wife, who is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Shorei Goju as well as fast with a comeback. Even I am careful what I say.

Sounds like you ran into a real know it all moron. My boy is 6 lbs. and is not too big. Big or small, we love our babies!!
That woman sounds like she is very insecure herself. She has to put down your dog to make herself feel better about herself, that she is so knowledgable, etc. She is just ignorant.
