Glad to hear that the meeting went well! $400 sounds fair to me. Marco is adorable and sounds like a sweetheart. I made my father decide for me when I faced this choice. :p Wishing you the best in making your decision. |
He sounds great! Personally, I think $400 is a fair price. He's still young, and for me it is $382.29 for the neutering (I just looked at Chase's receipt), so I think that's great that he comes neutered with toys/crate/food too! |
If you decide yes, check out his vet papers first, of course. |
Aww, this is all so exciting! I am so glad that your first meeting went well. I think $400 is a fair price, considering he is already neutered and everything. Just make sure you check up on her vet references. It sounds like this could be the one! :) |
This is totally off-subject but I just have to ask. If you get him, are you gonna keep his name? I know he is almost one, but I am just curious. ;) You could change it to Michael, which is close to Marco and then you could have a Michael and a Jackson.. haha I knew you would love that! Haha, maybe that is just me who names their dogs crazy stuff like that..:p |

But no I personally don't like Marco. I've been thinking of names I've always liked. A few that I came up with were Tanner, Parker, Walker, Miles... I was trying to think of 'J' names too but couldn't think of any ones I liked. |

Yeah I don't think I'll be telling the parents about this one until he's already home and they can't do anything about it. :p My dad will probably tell me I'm stupid, haha, but then he'll fall in love. He didn't want me getting Jackson either but he loves him like a grandson. I'll have to tell him that he doesn't have to dogsit both of them though... then he'd tell me I'm nuts. They have 2 dogs over there already. I've already decided if I need to go away, I'll find a doggie daycare to keep Marco, or maybe a YT member? :p;) I think Jackson would freak in a kennel-type setting, his personality is so much more shy, etc, but Marco seems like the kind of dog that wouldn't care! Oh, and his vet was Banfield. so I'm sure he was vaccinated out of the wazoo because that's what Banfield does, but I'll see his papers tomorrow. |
He is totally adorable! I just wanted to wish you luck and IF you do get him I can't wait to see your pics :) Quote:

I'm definitely thinking $400 may be too much though. I've been looking around at most rehomes, and most people just ask for a $100 fee to ensure they're going to a good home. I just don't know. I can get a purebred puppy from a reputable breeder for $600. That's definitely kind of holding me back. Should I send her an email and tell her I'm only willing to pay, like, $300 for example? And if she replies back with "no" then just back off, and wait a few days to see if she emails me back willing to sell for lower price? I feel like if she really just wanted a good home, she wouldn't be asking $400-$500. I just feel kind of guilty giving her $400 for her personal self, when shelters all around here have dogs for much less and the money is going to a charity/good cause. I'm feeling bad about giving this much money to just a person.... I don't know! |

I was thinking of sending an email but I can't think how to word it. |
I can see the sellers point in asking what she is. First of all, she probably put out quite a bit to get the dog in the first place. She's put in quite a bit in vetting him, too. But most of all, she wants to make sure he's going to end up in a good home. If she offered him for $100, everyone would be coming out of the wood work. She needs to know that who ever takes him is going to have the cash flow to keep him properly cared for. In the end, only you can know whether Marco is the companion for you and Jackson. |

Hmmm... that would definitely make me think twice. There's no way I would let any of my pups go to a home without giving someone the 3rd degree. |
Hey Brit, I think that after seeing Marco today, maybe you can have her meet you at the dog park or somewhere where the boys could meet and greet. It's Jackson who has the final sayso so it's important to make sure he approves. Marco does sound like he would be a good fit though. Best of luck. :) |

Just her reaction about a "trial period" and the money part of it. If I HAD to re-home my beloved pet after having him almost a year. First of all I would be devastated and I would be extremely concerned about where he went and what kind of family, etc.. I would certainly have questions! These kinds of decisions are always hard. I know you seem really concerned about having the boys get along and that's important. As far as price that's a subjective thing. He's neutered, a year old and a teapot! :) Which is great & what you are looking for, but not everyone looking for a Yorkie is looking for that and would be willing to pay that. So it's just a personal call on that! I wish you the best with your decision!! |

I know some people will disagree with me, and I understand the reasons to not advertise a free dog, but I personally as a pet owner would charge ZERO to a good home. I simply do not look at my pets and think, I have spent X number of dollars on them. A really good home would be payment enough for me. :) |
Humm i would wonder why she didnt want to know anything about where he is going? Seems a little strange to me. Personally i dont think the price is that bad for a dog who comes with everything. Its totally up to you tho. Good luck and let us know :) xxx |
just a thought on the flip side, you said she loved the dog and seemd to take care of him well, im sure its not easy fior her to give up marco, but its probably in his best interest, after you made the choice to rehome your dog would you want the possibility of he being returned in a week?i probably would not, I rescued cooper in july the lady wanted 300.00 for him he was not fixed, or well taken care of in my opinion,,, I knew right away if cooper wasnt a right fit for me i would neuter him get his teeth pulled and clean and find him a better home, I rescued him from 24 hours a day in a cage, and no medical care. The owner did not want photos updates or anything, didnt care my name where i lived or anything, just wanted my money, but i knew he would be loved and cared for by me. Cooper is a great little guy his teeth are clean now he has gained some wieght, we have some issues with his eyes, we have been to the eye dogtor 5x now, but im glad he is with me. I hope marco finds a good home. |
I think 400 is beyond reasonable if he is coming with all his stuff. Neutered and up to date on shots. What more do you have to spend on? Nothing. And hes only around a year old! I know you say you can get a puppy for 600$ but a puppy is going to need more vaccinations, spay/neuter, all their belongings, it's going to cost you double. Personally if I was rehoming one of my dogs, I would NEVER give them away for free. Unless it was a family member or friend. Someone I knew. I know that these are a part of the family, etc. But the amount of time, money and love that goes into a dog it's not wrong to ask for some of that back. I think if she really wanted to just get rid of him like that she would be giving him away for free or dirt cheap. You said he is nicely groomed and looks well taken care of. I really don't see nothing wrong with her saying she wants to find him a new home not do trial runs. If I had time to look for a home then okay, but how many trial runs are you going to do before you find a good home? I understand if something doesn't work out but I myself think it's kind of wrong to be passing him around like that. And you say you'd pay 350? Whats another 50$ ontop of that. I don't even feel comfortable with the comment you made about not telling your parents until you bring him home. It's their home and I think since you live there you should be letting them know ahead of time. Personally I don't think you should be getting another dog at this time if you can't say nothing until he is home. I know you want to add a second dog but you should go about it in a responsible way. |

I love the dog. This is what sucks. I guess I really just don't want to support another person like this. I got Jackson from a BYB in Baltimore City too, and I feel guilty about giving HER $550 of my hard earned money... of course Jackson was worth it. But ahh this is my dilemma. I think she said her uncle was the breeder or something? |

I know puppies cost more in the long run, etc. I guess I'm just looking at things that I didn't particularly notice when I was there. Oh, and the parents thing... my parents are cool. They're not the typical parents. I actually had asked about a dog early this year I had a possibility of adopting, but he got snatched up before I got to shelter. and my mom said "oh, you can get another dog!" and she wouldn't have cared. The stepdad is pretty laid back, he doesn't care, as long as he doesn't have to pay for it, etc, he's fine. I guess it's just a shame because the dog seems and feels perfect... but the whole situation is starting to make me feel shady. |
So, I just sent her this: Hi Eboni--thanks for letting me visit Marco--I really think he could be a good match for me and Jackson, and I could give him a really great home (exercise daily, dog parks, etc). In thinking about rehoming fees, I was originally looking at $250. Can we talk about the rehome fee, since that is the only thing holding me back? Or is it non negotiable? Thanks for answering. Brittany I guess the worst she can say is no, or counteroffer. Then I can debate more. I don't know! This dog just seems so perfect. Quote:
She told me she had one woman come to her and wanted a smaller dog. So, yes, teapots are definitely less wanted, sadly. |
I think $400 is definitely reasonable. A lot of rescues cost that much or more. He's already neutered and comes with all of his belongings. I paid $200 and $400 for my rescues and had to still buy everything so $400 isn't so bad. Good luck! :) |
I'm psyching myself out, I always do this. :( I get all excited, thinking I'm absolutely doing the right thing, and then I have doubts. I just don't know. Maybe I'm not ready for a second dog. |
Quote:
How would you feel if that happened with Marco? Would you be relieved that he has found a new home with someone else, or really sad because he's not coming home with you? |
Brit, go with your gut... I know the feelings you are having. When I was searching for a second, I doubted myself and wondered if I would upset Couver... Even though he is great at the dog park with all types of dogs, but wondered if he really would be okay with a sister. Adding Khloe was the best decision. Couver is completely infatuated with her and I couldn't be happier with my decision. My only concern with you is are you financially capable of adding a second? What about if you get home and he has a huge health problem? I know you are a smart girl, but just make sure you are 100% ready for a second... Just know that more puppies will come along! If she isn't willing to go down on her rehoming fee, I say walk away. Good luck in your decision! |

Brig, Have you tried calling her vet for a reference? If you are concerned about her possibly doing this several times maybe they can give you some info as to whether she's another dogs. |
