Marking is a natural behavior; it maybe just the lifting of the leg with a small amount of fluid. However, this behavior does increase once a boy is used for stud. To deter this behavior one needs to be very versed in training methods.

I just wanted to elaborate on the bolded part. Training them not to mark is like potty training times 5, it's times 10 if you have no idea that it's not peeing but marking. My two year old was neutered when he was one. That means, he was allowed to mark for months, making this into a behavior he was use to, balls or no balls, it was ingrained. The longer you allow marking to continue, the harder it is to break them of it. It took me months to get my boy to kick the habit, and that was with the help of the neuter (no more hormones) and I was home with him 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, correcting his every wrong move. It can definitely be done, you just have to be vigilant. One last thing, even after the neuter, the hormones driving the marking behavior don't disappear all at once. It's more like it tapers off, and eventually the boy no longer has that drive.

The smartest thing to do is to neuter before those hormones kick in.

YES! Save yourself the trouble. I still can't trust Kaji at a new persons home. He always wants to "make himself at home." He's fully potty trained; marking is just a completely separate issue.

Unfortunately in Beamer's case I got him the day before his 1st birthday and he hadn't been neutered. He is neutered now, but he still marks

Work with him. Kaji came to me on his first birthday, was neutered after, and with much training, he has learned not to mark in my home. I have to "re-train" in other people's homes, but after a visit or two, he won't mark there either.

It's very common for even nuetered boys to mark in other's home. It's a territorial thing.

I figured as much. He does it especially if there is a dog in the home. But, after I tell him no, he won't do it again.

Beamer's mom, I pretty much described it in one of my previous post. It's a lot like potty training all over again. I cleaned up every accident, and constantly watched him. I also used belly bands, because marking is successful even with a little bit of pee. Plus, I'm a hot head. I know my own limits, and I didn't want to blow up in Kaji's face. When I couldn't watch him, he was crated. When I could, I followed him around and every time he lifted his leg I corrected him. The correction I used was a double clap followed by "no." I encouraged him do mark outside. If he wanted to stop, smell, mark at every tree, bush, and post, I let him do it. Better there than inside right?

He didn't show much interest then. But now that he only gets out once a week, boy does he mark!

Thats the honest truth, my boys are so good at home , But the second we go to my familys home, They mark everywhere

I now take Bands with me

Tucker does the same thing, he was neutered at 4.5 months old. He 'marks" outside all the time, but never in my house. However as soon as we go into someone elses house he marks.
