| I know for a fact that older dogs w/missing teeth will have their tongue sticking out...but Momo sticks his tongue out all the time. It's so darn cute! He has a really long tongue too, so maybe that has something to do w/it. All my other 3 rarely stick their tongue out...he makes up for it lol. He has a little cut on his tongue, some bug left a stinger on it awhile back & left it like that. Poor baby, he gets into so much naughty trouble lol.

| Thor's Human Donating Member | I'm going to be Debbie Downer here... it's actually a sign that your dog is uncomfortable. It's an abbreviated form of the tongue flick, which dogs do as an appeasement signal when they feel social pressure. That's why it often happens when you are taking a picture of your dog, as many dogs feel uncomfortable in front of the camera. Don't get me wrong, I think it's darling (as evidenced by my avatar), but if your dog is doing it a lot, consider backing off and giving them more space. Some of the pictures posted here just show the dog panting, or with their mouth open in excitement. I'm talking about when just a little is showing and the mouth is closed, or when the dog is repeatedly licking their lips. Another sign of discomfort is yawning. It does depend on the context. For instance, if you are teaching your dog a trick, he might be sort of stressed, but in a good way, and stick his tongue out. Or if he does it while he's approaching you, he's showing you respect. He's saying in doggie language, hey, I'm not here to take any of your food or toys. I just want to love on you! When Thor approaches me, he goes through this whole series of lip smacks and yawns 'cause he's such a timid little guy.

| Here's my Max with his tongue hanging out while playing. I've seen him stick on his tongue just slightly, very slowly, once before, and it was actually kind of scary to me. Maybe I'm weird? lol Last edited by Dany001; 07-17-2010 at 04:15 PM. |

| I first got Dudley when he was six months old, and for the first month he kept his tongue out constantly. I took him to the vet because I was worried he had dental problems, but the vet couldn't figure out a cause. As Duds and I got to know each other better, I learned that he was actually using it as a form of communication! He now does it when he: 1) is frightened 2) is unsure about the situation 3) feels threatened 4) gets woken up from a nap and/or moved from a napping spot 5) is upset because I'm "taking too long" to feed or play with him 6) can't get down from the bed/couch (he's a teacup so everything is high, and he's afraid of heights anyway) etc. etc., Although sometimes I think he does it just because he knows it will make me smile. ![]() Love these little guys! |

Or they could be toothless like my Brandi...... . Her tongue is out now I would say 60% of the time. That only started when she got her last 4 teeth pulled. | |

| YT Addict | Mia seems to do it at rest but then after she states something new even a person her tongue quivers, I have no idea why it happens it just does and then she doesn't repeat it which is most of the time. |

| Our Pixie June does this too! Cracks us up! |

| Thor's Human Donating Member | This is a GORGEOUS picture! It is also a classic example of the mini-tongue flick, indicating that Pixie June is feeling a little uncomfortable. Again, a lot of dogs feel "pressured" by the camera. Certainly not the end of the world, but maybe give her an extra treat for being such a good girl.

| This is why I was asking the panting question, Teegy has only ever stuck his tongue out when he was unhappy in an environment and I could sense him stressing, so we left. The tongue and all signs of stress disappeared Quote:

| I don't know if I completely agree with this. Bevo has the tip of his tongue out everyday at some point... Usually when napping or sleeping at night... But, he will also partially stick it out if hes just sitting or watchin tv...he will be 4 in October and has had this habit ever since we brought him home at 12 weeks. I would hate to think he has been "uncomfortable" his entire life... I would imagine there may be another explanation... Or at least I would hope so!! Quote:
