Can I vent for a minute about breeding? I like to look over all the sections of the board, including the breeders section. Not because I ever intend to breed, but just because I want to know everything I can about my pups, including the perilous journey they made to get here in the first place. I just don't understand all these "accidental" litters. Hello! It's basic facts of life, people. If you have an unspayed female and an unneutered male running around your home, sooner or later it's bound to happen. It's like getting in your car after drinking every Friday night and then being "surprised" when you have an accident or get arrested for a DUI. I know common sense isn't common, but come on! I've had dogs in my life for my entire life. Never once did we have a litter, accidental or otherwise. Why? Because we spayed and neutered all of our pets as soon as they were old enough. It's not rocket science. It's called being responsible. [Ok, ending rant] |

I think the statement "accidental breeding" is an oxymoron. Its just like my mom says.. its not like a boy just slips and falls.. and his lips touch yours. Its NOT accidental. (She used to say this to me when I was in elementary school.. ha ) :idontknow |
Sometimes I get the feeling that some of these people really do want their female to get pg. and they know it's wrong, so they make up stories to make it sound ok. We have even suggested to some of these people to take the female to the Vet. right away to have spayed, but unless I just missed it, I've never once heard that they did!! Sound familiar? What a shame that these babies are having their lives put at a real risk of death, from owners that know next to nothing about breeding. I'm pretty sure Mardelin is well on her way to having carpal tunnel from trying her best to enlighten all the ones who have a "oops" on the way. They should really listen to her, but they don't. So sad. :( |
I agree. There are no accidents. The dogs are just doing what comes naturally in that situation ... it is the humans that didn't do what was necessary to prevent the pregnancy. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. I also suspect that some of these "accidents" weren't really unplanned. The stories always seem to be inundated with a plethora of excuses as to why it happened giving the OP absolutely no responsibility or control over the matter ... usually the dog was left in the care of someone else, etc. Hey, it's YOUR dog, get it spayed/neutered, and don't make it a baby sitter's responsibility because you didn't take care of business. You would have leave your pet in someone else's care for what, 2 or 3 weeks?, for it not to be in heat when you left, only to have it suddenly go into heat while you are still gone and reach the fertile days. |
I can't understand unplanned litters either! as Bob Barker says..."Spay & Neuter your Pets!!" Folks who cannot spell "pregnancy" should def not be breeding their pets! |
I agree with the OP completely. I think many times it's just an "excuse" used to garner sympathy, support and information in the hopes that by saying it was an "accident" it will spare them criticism for being irresponsible owners/breeders. Accident you say? OK, fix the problem--have the dog spayed and eliminate the risks. Then come the excuses as to why that course of action is not an option. Accident...yeah, right! |
My dear father in law (who is no longer with us) used to say "there is no such thing as an accident, it is premeditated carelessness" |
Couldn't agree with you more:( There's always some danged excuse---Oh I just wanted a puppy, or wanted her to be a mother once, or whatever:rolleyes: I think that if you're not smart enough to KNOW how litters happen, you shouldn't be allowed to own a pet:p |
Aaaaaammmeeennnnnn!!!!!! |
Great thread, this should be a sticky!!!!! |

I don't like it and I think people are crazy to try if they don't have a clue what is going on. You don't just throw two dogs together and then the mom handles the whole thing. You lose sleep, you age about 5 years each whelp from worry about everything. There is always a chance you could lose the bitch and lose all the puppies. And it isn't cheap to have litters. So why do it, just cause you want your girl to be a mommy. Its crazy! |
Funny you should post this. I had been thinking about posting about all the clueless "breeders" on here lately. Seems to be an epidemic. It's almost like if you google 'Yorkie breeding for dummies', you wind up here . It would be funny if it wasn't so dangerous. I suppose all we can do is offer what help we can to those about to deliver and hope they're receptive to the advice, advise spaying for those early on.....and pray for no tragedies for the Moms and pups. |

I agree 100%. But if you dare mention that on the breeder site - then you are being mean. |

This is WHY it is SO important to offer the TRUTH about what paw(foot)print is left behind because of irresponsible breeding practices!:thumbdown |
Donna, you deserve a huge pat on the back for posting this so succinctly! And a bazillion platinum stars! :star::star::star::star::star::star: Maybe all the "accidental" breedings occur because they'd rather be considered lacking common sense than a BYB? |
So many posts I would love to quote and :yeahthat:    Rhetts_Mama, I could not agree with you more on this topic. And Yorkiedaze, I'm surprised we even have Mardelin around. From her posts, I know she put in an insane amount of effort and time to learn what she knows about our beloved breed. So for her to come here, and instead of sharing insight and reading happy stories, she comes here to be frustrated and pull her hair out at every, "oops," "we all had to start somewhere" kind of thread. |
Sorry guys, but this is a topic that I'm rather passionate about. The other thing that gets me is the excuse "I wanted her to experience being a mother before I spayed her". No you didn't. YOU wanted to experience breeding before you spayed her. She couldn't care less if she never had a litter. Just be honest about your reasoning behind breeding. It doesn't make what you did right, but at least you aren't adding being a liar to the list of everything else that was wrong. [climbing back off soap box now] |
I couldn't agree more! |

The part I don't get is, ok, your girl is pregnant, so the best course of action is to wait until she is in labor and then try to figure out what your are supposed to do:mad: |

They are so caught up in not being praised for their irrational efforts that they can't see the bigger picture. Point being there is great information being offered backed by years and years of experience, and they are getting at no charge. I am not above anyone who has bred their Yorkie for the sake of extra income(which from what I have heard is a joke in itself if it is done the right way) or just having offspring from a loving pet, because I to, bred my pair for the sake of giving my two daughters pups. Thankfully the breeding did not take and the furbabies will never be bred again. I made this decision because of all the posts I have read on YT about what a responsible/reputable breeder is all about which is the betterment of the breed. It has been those so called bashing threads that have changed my way of thinking on the entire situation and in every one of those threads I have picked up more than two or three things that has been excellent advice and useful information. Anyway, that is my two cents worth on the situation. :aimeeyorkYorkieProud:aimeeyork :pIF YOU DON'T WANT THE TRUTH, THEN DON'T ASK A BREEDER!!!:p |

People can get mad; whatever. They are never going to find the knowledge on any other forum that they will find here at YT. Not from what I've seen. Like the style or not ~ YT is the best.:animal36 |
