OMG, please help! I was just playing with the pups and all of a sudden, Oliver started making this noise that was kind of like the noise that you make when you swish mouthwash around in your mouth. Then he threw up (foamy, no food) and fell on his side while his legs were "running". He hopped up after like 5 seconds and is acting fine now, but it was really really scary! Has this happened to anyone else? He threw up yesterday (same foamy kind), but this falling on his side thing is new to me. He has a vet appt on Friday for his rabies shot, should I wait till then or take him in now? |
That would scare me enough to go in right away - not the throwing up part ....but the falling over part....how old is he ? talk to your vet asap and ask them about this - - but I would wait on the Rabies shot till you know he's ok.....I never saw my girls do that - they got sick yes...but never fell over like that - To me - this would warrant a fast trip to the vet - GOOD LUCK !!!! I hope he's ok ...how scary for you |
Villette, he's 6 months old next week. I've never seen this happen to any of my dogs, so I'm really really concerned :( Think its time to give the vet a call... |
I am not sure...but prayers are with you and I hope he is fine |

He COULD just be doing a drama queen act (crossing fingers) ....but it's way better to get a professional opinion....I know you're scared ...we're here for you and PLEASE let us know what the vet says OK ? |
It sounds like a sezure to me, and I wouldnt hesitate to bring him in ....RIGHT NOW. It could be a toxin or something far more serious....be safe driving~ dont panic but do get to a vet today. |
On my way to the vet right now - will keep you all posted. Keep your fingers crossed!!! |

Please try to get to your vet asap, this also appears to me to be a seizure of some sort. |
Please let us know what your vet says. It sounds like a grand mal seizure to me, too.. way too scary to ignore and I am happy you are taking him to the vet. Prayers are coming your way... |
I would take him to the vet asap. If hes falling over something is wrong. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. please keep us posted. |

omgsh im shocked .. we were just talking .. I HOPE UR BABY IS OK!! XOX |
So how is he? |
Praying for your baby oh my I know how scared ya must be. I am glad ya took him to the vet right away. The very best thing that any of us can do for ya right now is say a prayer. Prayer does change things! Let us know how he is |
Sugar shock If you pup throws up bile and no food is mixed in, his belly is empty, look at his gums, if they are pale, give him a good squirt of pancake syrup. Foaming throwup is stomach bile & acid. Let us know how his gums look. Virginia |
Anybody hear back about how he is? Oh my gosh. Even though I don't actually know you or your dog, I will stay up all night worrying about this now, because I don't have anything better to do !!! I hope everything is OK. |
I'm glad you're taking him to the vet! What you describes is scary! I hope it turns out to be nothing! Saying a prayer!!! |
my thoughts are with you I hope everything is okay. |
Most of us don't use pure maple syrup but we use watered-down syrup for pancakes. The better syrup if you do not have the very thick 100% maple syrup, Karo or similar brand, might be a better choice. Drop for drop, it will have more sugar. I always give a tube of Nutri Stat with each puppy I place with very specific instructions for use. I agree with Virginia about his gums. They should be PINK; if they are LIGHT in color or WHITE, they are in shock and must be treated without delay. You did that and your puppy was better because you did. We are still waiting to hear what your vet has to say. |
Wow.. i would call the vet!!! Keep us posted!! |
I hope the little fellow will be ok...You both are in my prayer's... |
Update Hi everyone, First off, I'd like to thank you all for your sweet messages. It really helps in times like this to have people like you behind me. :yorkietal I brought Oliver to the vet and they took him right away. His temperature, weight, teeth, and gums all looked normal. They took him in the back to x-ray his belly and to run a bunch of tests...liver, blood sugar, etc. Everything came out normal, and the vet basically said that it could be one of two things. Either its the start of epilepsy, which she thought was a long shot because it usually starts when they're a few weeks old (I don't know this for sure, just what she told me) or it was just a freak occurrence that was possibly caused by overexcitement. She gave me some special food to settle his stomach and wants me to bring him back if he throws up again or has a similar episode. Sooo...he's back home with me, a little more whiny and needy than usual but I guess that's to be expected. Lexi is being a concerned sister and has been smooching and licking Oliver since I brought him home  THANK YOU again to everyone for your advice and good wishes!!! |
Im so glad all the test came back normal. Sending hugs. |
Well I'm glad all the tests came out okay. This must have been a very difficult night for you guys, thank you so much for responding tonight, I've been checking this thread every half hour! (I'm a worry wart) I'll keep praying for his upset stomach, that's sweet that lexi gave him loves! Have a good night! |
Glad that everything came back normal and I am just hoping that it was a freak accident due to over excitement..sending some get well kisses and hugs from Maximus and Me!!!! |
Update #2 I just got a call from my vet this morning and she wants me to bring Ollie in this afternoon to test for a portosystemic shunt :( She went home last night and did a bunch of research and talked to the other vets in the office this morning, and just wants to rule this out as a possibility. They need to draw some blood and test the bile acid levels, so I'll know today whether he needs to go see a specialist. Of course, I'll let you all know how it goes...I hope its nothing serious. |
oh dear, i sure hope they rule out all of that .. and he gets better soon .. best of luck!! XOX |
Poor Ollie!!! Let's have high hopes that it was just a wierd occurance and a shunt of any sort isn't a possibility. Best of luck though this afternoon!!! |
I just read this thread and truly hope it was just a freak happening and that he will be healthy as a horse. How does his mother act around him? Is she more stand-offish with him than with the others? This would indicate that there is something wrong. However, I sure hope he is perfectly fine. How very scarey that must have been for you  |
I hope its nothing serious. Good luck to you & Oliver. and way to be a good Yorkie mommy :) |
