Animal Smiley 019 Are they good dogs?

Hi. We don't exactly have a Yorkie just yet but will be getting one pretty soon. I'm afraid that the Yorkie won't be everything I wanted it to be. The dog I will probably be getting is named Daisy. She is 7 years old. Will they live for a while? I want a loving companion to walk with, hold, and love. PLEASE REPLY : ?????

Lucy is my first yorkie. I have had a maltese and currently have a Westie. Lucy is everything I could have hoped for and more. She is loving, playful, loves to cuddle; and manages to force Ringo to play with her. She is a good walker; but cannot go quite the distance that my 15 lb Westie can go. She loooves to play with her ball and toys.

A 7 year old yorkie is going to be a bit more laid back than a puppy; but my 7 year old Maltese (since deceased) still loved to play and walk.

I've had dogs all my nearly 62 years. All kinds of dogs. I loved each and every one of them, from mutt to purebred. While I had them, I always thought their breed was sooooo good. But I've never had a second of the same breed ... I always got a different breed.

Until I got my first Yorkie.

Now I have two (they're kinda like potato chips: bet'cha can't have just one!). And I love them dearly. They're everything I could hope for in a pet: small, compact, friendly, protective, cuddly, don't eat much (with good food) and don't poop much, either! Mine are healthy, so I expect them to be around for a while, which can be 15-17 years. My greatest hope is that I will never have to go through the pain of losing another beloved pet, and that my daughter (who lives with me and loves them as much as I do) will be caring for them after I'm gone.

You're going through a bit of anxiety right now. A 7 year old may have some problems, issues. S/He may grieve for it's former owner. But with time and patience, you will be able to overcome all problems. Yorkies are smart little dogs - sometimes TOO smart - but I don't think you will ever regret your decision.

Good luck - and have a great time.

A little advise - try to not imagine how the new yorkie will be - concentrate on just doing your best and hopefully she will be all you want in a dog....it's easy to have a dream of the perfect pet but in reality - we really don't know when getting them - it's all just a matter of perspective and once you get her you'll probably fall in love even if she isn't what your hopes are ....

I believe the average span is approx 15 years though from what I read before getting mine.....and have seen many that reached an older age so that's another question that no one can really answer.

good luck

The problem is, the 7 year old Yorkie, has knee problems. All though we haven't gotten her yet, I'm a bit nervous of how we can play with her. I don't know if we can take her on walks because of her knee problems. We sent in the adoption application yesterday.

awww - once you get her you can take her in for a checkup - that's something everyone should do when getting a new doggie - once you spend time with her you'll be able to see her capabilities but I would also watch her closely until she adjusts and watch her to see how active (or inactive) she is

good luck !

Thanks for the advice. It said on her description the she (Daisy) was very playful and loved children. Hopefully her bad knees won't bother her.

My Jada has bad knees(luxating patella) and she still plays, walks, etc. Just have her checked out by the vet. There are different grades of LP,Jada is a grade 3 and she doesn't have to have surgery yet. We have her on Dasaquin(joint supplement) and she is doing well with it. Good luck and yes I think the yorkie breed is a good dog I love my babies so much.

My Lucy has knee problems too; she plays and walks and does everything. Sometimes when I think the walk has gone on too long for her and her little knees; I will carry her part of the way; she can't always keep up with my bigger dog though she sure wants to!

Lots of yorkies have knee problems. Two of mine do and shouldn't jump up and down when they greet me (which they do) jump of beds and sofas (which they do) so I just keep it to a minimum and have them checked out often. Enjoy your perfect dog.

I made my decision to get a Yorkie because my friends two Yorkies are the best dogs I've ever met in my life. They have individual personalities, they are protective and loving and I did a lot of research on the breed before searching for a breeder.

It's the best decision I've ever made and my life has changed because of my little man. One thing though, just because they are gorgeous and cute, don't forget to discipline them. They are very very smart dogs and will play you like a fiddle if you let them.

Good luck in your decision

This is very true. Don't let the big brown eyes get to you. Then can melt even the coldest heart. They need discipline and structure as well. My little one who I also got when she was 7 (she's now 9 yrs old) went from being submissive to being a alpha. I have since then corrected some behavior problems.

When I got Brandi at 7, she did not want to play or know how to play with toys and she still doesn't. So i found other ways to play with her. She loves to cuddle and is a very laid back kind of yorkie who has her moments of excitement. When I got her, I was looking for the same things you were but I actually got something more. She does more for me than I could ever do for her. In my eyes, she's the perfect dog and that is all that matters.

Roxie is my first dog and my first Yorkie. She is a great little dog...so different and so much smarter than I ever expected her to be! Try not to have too many expectations, as every dog is different. Good luck!

I have to admit that I always thought Yorkies are just lapdogs happy to be carried around all day in a purse. And I won't tell you the actual nick name they have in Germany for a Yorkie....lol.
But, after getting one myself (okay, grand-ma had a little fling with a maltese) I have to say it was the best decision ever. I can only speak for Merlin, but he is the cutest, smartest and bravest (well, most of the time). He loves to cuddle, play, be outside but also, like us, likes to laze around. The cutest thing is when he tells my husband at night that it is time for bed (he sleeps in the living room).

Every Yorkie is different, and you will love yours, whatever the personality...I have one that is outgoing, energetic, fiesty, and soooooooo much fun...My other little one, Buzz, the boy, is laid back, mellow, a cuddle bug, and just plain sweet...I love them both, for who they are...I hope you won't have any specific expections, and just love her, for, exactly, who she is...If you do that, it will be very rewarding, I promise you!!!
