| Asserting DOMINDANCE or AGRESSION??? Zhoie has a yorkie friend and they play together every week or so. She is 1 1/21 yrs & Jussi is 1 yr 2 mos. Have known/played since Jussi came home. Here's my issue, Jussie got 2 little sisters from the same litter that came home at 12 wks. Zhoie sees them to play also, but from the beginning she runs frantic from one to the other holding them down and making horrible growling sounds. She has not bitten one of them, but they are 6 mos now and you would think this would stop....NOT. She did they initially to Jussi to and he complied with her wishes, lol. Now, is she showing agression or what do you think? Oh, and there was a 2 1/2 yr Westie female she met for the first time last night along with the other 3 yorkies and she didn't not seem to mind her at all, just the two little girls that she see every week or so. Any tips on how to handled this, I really don't know what to do. After a good long while, she will stop and they all run around. But if they start jumping on her head again, she starts holding them down again. Advise on handling please??? Thank you all.

| I don't know the answer to your question, but more info might be helpful to someone who has more experience/knowledge relative to dog behavior: When Zhoie holds one of the girls down, how does she do it? Is the pup on her back with Zhoie on top, or is the pup right side up? Do the pups appear submissive? |

| Yes, they go on their backs, she is standing over them at the chest/face area with her legs on chest holding the down. I guess don't get it.

| Sounds like dominance to me. Generally, when I get a new foster, I let the dogs work things out as long as it doesn't escalate to the point where someone might get hurt. A little growling, snapping, okay, but no biting. There's a lot of communicating dogs do that doesn't make sense to us. I don't think what Zhoie is doing is really out of line. She's just re-establishing her dominant status. You have to admit, Zhoie is pretty sharp to realize she can get away with that with the puppies, but doesn't do it with the Westie, who might challenge her. There is the possibility that one of the puppies might challenge her someday, and I'd let them work that out on their own, unless they get too carried away.

| It's hard to tell to without seeing but it almost sounds to me like they are young and sometimes the way puppies play is not good manners in the dog world, like how puppies get in another dogs face and get excited and all, anyways, it almost sounds like she's correcting them and that may be a good thing. I usually stay out of things too unless I see that someone is really being bullied or things are going to escalate to the point of blood. Otherwise, I let them work it out on their own.....But good luck, hopefully others will reply... |

Thor's Human Donating Member | It's an adult dog's job to teach puppies their manners. If she is just holding them down, and they don't appear especially distressed, I would not worry about it. Do they continue to play with her after she does this? This would demonstrate that they are okay with her behavior. I would intervene if the dog being held down starts to sound distressed, or if multiple dogs gang up on each other. As a general rule, you can interrupt doggy playtime every few minutes, just to keep things from getting out of hand, and reminding them that ultimately, YOU are the biggest dog in the house.

| Thanks to all of you...this is a great help to me. I'm going to just let them work it out, unless it gets out of control.
