| What are the bad personality traits of the breed? I will be getting a yorkie in a few weeks and I'm actually nervous because I have never been around the breed. I have heard several things about yorkies that makes me a little worried. I have a maltese and have always had maltese growing up. I wonder if someone could tell me from experience how yorkie personalities differ from maltese. Especially I have heard that they tend to fight and be jealous of other dogs and be quite hyper. Any thoughts? And I know all dogs have their own personality. Just want some honest information about what the bad traits of the breed are so I am prepared from the start. Thanks so much Jodi |

| The only thing bad about the Yorkie breed is NOTHING in my opinion. I love them!!!!!!! I would try to take the next couple weeks and read as much as you can on Yorkies before your adoption. It will be better for both you and the Yorkie pup when you get her/him in the long run. To me, there is sooooo much information on this breed to be known about, and I feel it is very unsafe for the Yorkie pup to be purchased going in blind. I honestly am not familiar with the Maltese breed other than thinking they are quite cute. Good luck and welcome to Yorkie Talk.

| I haven't had my puppy long enough to probably see some of the bad tendencies but I have read they can be a stubborn breed of dog. That might be that individuals dog only however. One thing I have noticed though is that they are a very smart breed. I am amazed by how smart they are at such a young age. They are also very dependent and loyal to their owners. I am really looking forward to Chachi's adulthood.

| I have both breeds. Mia (my yorkie) is actually a much sweeter dog than my maltese, she has a much better temperament than Bentley (my malt). He's yappy, she isn't. He's aggressive and very protective of me. Mia is more of a snuggler and wants to be held more than my maltese, he will allow me to hold him when it's his choice...not mine. My yorkie is also more playful than my malt, I would not consider her hyper...just more playful. Hair care in a yorkie is a breeze compared to the maltese. My maltese was easier to housebreak, she has been a challenge. I love them both so much but he has been a more difficult dog. Would I get another maltese? no. Would I ever get another yorkie? without a doubt. I firmly believe that your temerament & personality variables is influenced by breeding and no matter what breed you have, some are going to be more difficult than others (just like us humans, some are easy going and some are not) I have always heard that some top breeders are not breeding for temperament. I bought Bentley from one of the top maltese breeders in the county but it never occured to me to ask the temperament question. It's very important to ask the breeder about her lines temperament.

| Great book I read "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers" by Liz Palika. Very helpful. Will help you learn about the breed, how to train them, etc. Good luck! |

| Luv my pupster, I would have to say ditto exactly to your post. I also have a maltese and yorkie, and both have the same personalities as yours. May I ask where you got your Bentley from? I saw him on the dogster page and he is very cute! I am attaching photos of my babies (I hope it works). Karen |

| I'm in the "they're perfect" camp really, I do love them so much. If I had to find something bad about the breed I would probably say: They are attention whores. Now this can be a good or bad thing, depending on you. I have one Yorkie mix and one pure Yorkie - but both insist on being with me 24/7. I personally love this, I couldn't live without my babies with me all the time, but I have some friends who couldn't imagine having a dog like that. Good luck!

| It all depends on how you raise and train the pup. All breeds have "faults", but only you can decide how much of it comes through in their personality. Don't let the dog train you. YOU train the dog. I made that mistake with my baby, and I'm JUST now getting him to start to obey me (He's 3 years old now). So from the very beginning, work with your Yorkie baby on everyday things such as brushing and playing with it's ears and feet, etc. They are much like malteses in their personalities. With the right training and the right postive methods, they can be little angels, but they will push to see what they can get away with. And with those cute faces, sometimes they get away with a lot. haha

| Yorkies do want a LOT of attention. I haven't been around too many other breeds, but I notice that Yorkies want your attention a lot, which is great for some people and it can be not so good for others. |

as far as being hyper... Chelsey is our forth yorkie baby and no, not one of them have ever been hyper ... Chelsey is so layed back and peacefull and she never complaints, i can do anything with her as long as she is with me, i talk her to sleep lol maybe i have just been very blessed with my babies i dont know but honestly, i think it has a lot to do with how they are treated. Right now my baby girl is in her pjamas and is fast asleep on my lap.... All they really want is a lot of TLC, food and water and the only bad thing about them i can think of is that: they are thieves that steal ur heart | |

| The only things I can really think of his Amber gets really jellous. Escpecially when I am paying attention to my 11 month old. Amber cant stand that she will try to get in between us and lick me in the face. Another thing that was getting pretty bad was her stinky breath. But that is cured now she finally lets me brush her teeth. And finally she can be stubborn escpecially when she is outside. She will all of a sudden not remember what the word come means. As far as being hyper Amber is so laid back its silly. My husband calls her the lazy dog she loves to chill. I had a Maltese my whole childhood. And now my mom is looking into getting a male Yorkie (her maltese is now 8 years old) and I told her their is something different and special with the Yorkies. I also told her that she will bond so much more with the Yorkie than any of her Maltese's. Their is just something about the Yorkie that makes you fall in love insantly. I love the maltese but I am in love with the Yorkie! |
