Hi I'm new need help with the ear taping deal

I have read in may of my google searches that I should tape up my daughter's ears but not sure if I should. She is only 6 weeks old. First of all I thought that she was to young to leave her mommy but I haven't ever had a puppy of any breed so I am learning as I go. Any advise would be helpful.

Hello and welcome to yorkie talk. I have found everyone here to be kind and helpful Yes, you have heard right...6 weeks is WAY to young to take a yorkie pup. But since you have her a recomend that you get Nutrical for puppies...This will help her blood sugar not to drop if you need it. make sure she's eating well ( every few hours) and getting plenty to eat...Remember that her tummy is very small and she may only eat a few bite at one time.

there are alot of good thing on this site just look around the forums and ask lots of questions if you need to. I hope i could help alittle...Oh as for taping her ears, I would wait a little longer to make sure she is going to do well with eating and drinking...i brought izzy home at 13 weeks and starting taping her ears then and she did fine

As for the ear taping, that is completely optional. Her ears may rise on their own, or they could stay down and be just fine. It's only cosmetic.

She is still young. Her ears should be coming up anytime now. If you see within the next couple of weeks that they aren't coming up then you can tape them... it doesn't hurt them, just aids them.

I agree with making sure you give your young puppy NutriCal every few hours in addition to feeding her. I have done this with both of my puppies so that we could avoid the possibility of hypoglycemia.

If for some reason your young puppy is not eating much on her own, try giving her food by hand or holding her food and water dishes while she eats. I have had to do this with my yorkie puppy when we first brought her home. She would not eat much on her own unless we did this. And my little yorkie was 11 weeks old when we brought her home.

I also agree with making sure your young puppy gets ALOT of rest/sleep. My vet told us that is is very important when they are young. And especially for a tiny puppy/dog.

You are right, 6 weeks is way too young. I can't even imagine! But as for ear taping, I wouldn't worry about it at all for several more weeks. Mine don't even start to come up until 8 or 9 weeks and I have one at almost 12 weeks right now and he has one up and one down.

I would wait to tape the ears. Since she is so young they will probably pop up on their own but you can always shave the hair on the ears to take the weight off. This helped with my first yorkie. She was almost 4 months and her ears where still flopped. The vet shaved them and within a week they were up.

If you dont want to tape the ears yet, you can help them come up on their own by keeping the top third of the ear, front and back, shaved with a mustache trimmer so that the ear is lighter . This way it may go up on its on. If they arent up in about a weeks, I would tape them...just tape for 3 days then take off and after a couple of days tape again if they go back down.

My wife's Yorkie of 15 years passed away a year ago December. As a result, I decided to get her a Yorkie puppy for her Christmas present.

I went and visited a local breeder & picked out a puppy @ the first part of December, the breeder said I could have her by Christmas (I picked her up on the 23rd). I too, was inexperienced in the ways of Yorkies, all I know is that the puppy was itty-bitty (I found out later that six weeks is a bit too young to be separated from the momma, 8-12 weeks is standard, etc.)

My wife and I took care of Gracie just like she was a baby (which she was). We made sure she ate every few hours (beef flavored baby food w/ a little Karo syrup using a children's medicine syringe). We made sure she stayed warm and she did sleep a lot.

I have nothing bad to say about the breeder (we went back & got a 2nd pup from them (8 weeks old, Coco). They are good people & I visited their farm so I could see with my own two eyes that they really care for their animals and are reputable breeders, NOT a puppy mill. Our puppies are happy, healthy w/ no defects & VERY sweet & loving.

Our Gracie is very well adjusted & a great source of joy in our lives. She & her little sister Coco get along famously. My wife was a little concerned because Gracie's ears did droop a bit @ 10-12 weeks (I believe this coincides with teething). So we trimmed the hair on the ears with some blunt-tipped scissors, got some not-too sticky masking tape & ran one strip on the front of the ear with a 2nd strip on the back of the ear & left it on there for a few days. They stood up fine. As stated earlier, this is purely optional.

Your pup is very young the ears most likey will go up but if they arent up by 12 weeks then shave and tape them
