I was wondering who all has a larger dog with their yorkies? My husband is really wanting to get a larger dog, and I do miss having that big dog love. If you have one how does it work out? Any suggestions on making it work? I attached a pic of the one we are looking at and he is good with small dogs and is used to living with one. He is one year old and already housebroken.

We have a 4 yr old Golden retriever, A female named Sadie, they get along fine. I only have to watch with Bella since she is so small, Riley is 10 lb so he is more sturdy. I have to watch that Sadie doesn't step on Bella. since Bella is 3 lb and Sadie is about 65 lb.

We have a 80lb black lab... he has an identity crisis and thinks he is a Yorkie lol and I am so NOT joking. He is best friends with Ginger, who is 4lbs. Its so funny to watch them play together b/c he is so gentle with her and he literally lets her walk all over him. She gets him to get things out of the trash for her - so they both get into trouble lol he will literally get something out of the trash and give it to her! lol But anyway, he is great with them. I trust them alone together now so if we leave, I baby gate them all in the laundry room together. He is so funny. He even tries to fit himself in their beds! He just wants to be a lap baby like the rest of them lol I just love how he thinks he is a Yorkie and the Yorkies think they are humans lol

Our two pups, Darwin who is 6 1/2 pounds (14 months) and Zain who is 115 pound Pyrenees/Lab mix (23 months) get along pretty well. We always keep an eye on them as they are both still silly young boys. It took us about 5 months of constantly sitting with them before they settled down. Now we are a lot more relaxed but we don't leave them alone when we are out - we are at the "leave the room for a few minutes at a time", stage. Zain wouldn't purposely hurt Darwin, but with the size difference it wouldn't take much to hurt him. If anything, it's Darwin who will snap at Zain, and also Darwin who loves playing keep away with his toys from Zain. Lots of fun to have both of them but just make sure you keep an eye on them. Good luck with your new dog - he's a beauty!!

To the OP, *in my opinion*, it's possible to have both the big and small dogs, but it's entirely dependent upon temperament. The ""big dog" in our household is my daughter's Staffordshire; he's 14 years old, bred before everyone wanted seriously protective beasties. Also, his mother died and he was hand raised by her from the age of 4 weeks. He thinks he's human, and is has a very gentle soul. NO ONE should have to put up with the stuff he does from the other dogs

Your Yorkie would be the older dog; if you get a passive puppy, they should be OK as the Yorkie will assume the Alpha dog role. Make sure the "big dog" is neutered as soon as feasible so that adult hormones don't rear their ugly head.

Just my opinion, but it works here (and other places, it appears!) so it CAN be done. Good luck!

Marvin our Mutt was extremely sweet with Fizz. He is a shepherd, Beagle, Sharpie mix. It was great. He would sleep ON my feet and keep them warm and Fizz would snuggle beside me. Then sometimes they would snuggle together.

My son's 50 lb pitbull, Luckey, also lives with us. Tensley and Luckey get along fabulously. Infact, Luckey believes he's only as big as Tensley and Tensley believes he's as big as Luckey. It really is quite hilarious to see them playing together.

I believe it can totally work out fine. I don't live with a big dog but I've slept at my grandma's house with her huge Lab a few times and it's totally fine. I hope to have a big dog again one day and the Husky is beautiful!

We have a 3 yr old black lab-Rumor, at first he wasnt so sure about Lucy and we had to really watch him. But I think once he realized she wasn't going anywhere he gave in. Now they get along great! He will even watch where he stops to make sure he doens't hurt her. We still keep a close eye on them though because Lucy is soo small and Rumor can get a little rough when he plays!

We also have Honey, a lab/pitt mix, and Fiona is the boss of Honey! They get along great!

It takes time, and you have to initially keep a close eye on them. I would not put a large breed PUPPY alone with a yourkie as they can play too rough, or step on it. It has worked great for us, and we always worry about the Yorkie hurting the big guy now!

Not exactly the same...but I have a 110lb German Shepherd and a 8lb cat.

At times the dog can be a little too large for the cat, but he lets him know real fast with loud MEOW!

My parents neighbors have a great dane, a mastiff, and a chinese crested...so it is possible!

Thanks so much for the feedback! : ) We are supposed to pick him up in the morning. I am really excited but a little nervous too. He is 1 year old and thankfully already neutered. I have an Alaskan huskie about 60lbs, but really tall. I was a little worried as he has a prey drive but we slowly introduced them, first on my lab and then through a gate, then with me right there short amounts of time. It has been 2months and they are best friend they sleep together and everything. We do not leave them together when we are not home as the Yorkie tends to get really aggressive with teh huskie and he does nothing but you just never know.
