Strangers comments while walking I had read comments about how when people walk their Yorkie everyone stops and coos over them. Yesterday, since it was a beautiful warm day, I experienced that since it was Indy's and my first time out and about in a semi-busy area (a sale outside). Comments include: - "She's so cute!" (I like this comment!) - "Oh! She's so thirsty! Poor thing!" (Umm...I carry cold water with ice cubes in my purse for her.) - "She doesn't want to be outside." (I work 4-5 days a week. The weekend is our time to spend together. Why would I leave Indy in the house while I go outside and enjoy the day without her? We're not baking in the sun all day, it's a morning walk. It's not too hot, I give her water, and we're hanging out together...what's wrong with that?) - "She just wants to be carried. She must love that." (This is when Indy is standing calmly beside me. She's a dog. I love her to bits, and if there's danger of her being hurt I pick her up in a heartbeat. But she's a dog and loves to walk. This is part of our daily exercise.) - "Is she a miniature/teacup Yorkie?" (I think we all feel the same way about this question.) I really do enjoy walking with Indy, and love that people think she's cute, but I just don't like it when they think they know my dog better than I do. I'm very polite to everyone, but some people can be unintentially rude. It's frustrating when you're doing all the right things and paying close attention to your pup and people stand there and assume your dog isn't a "real" dog and shouldn't be walked/outside, ect. Thanks for letting me vent :) |
My favorite is "how old is your puppy?" I keep Daisy in a short haircut, so she tends to look extra tiny. You should see their faces when I explain that she is a full grown dog! Some people think that's cool, but some clearly think it is weird to have such a small dog. That's the thing about a Yorkie, they never fail to get attention! |
I've never experienced rudeness, so I guess I'm lucky. Or I just react the same way to some questions/responses. I think they are so adorable that if anyone were to make a negative comment, I'm not sure how I'd handle it. Probably NOT very tactfully......... LOL I'd probably ask them if they realized how rude they were? hahaha |
It happens! I get the "oh she's so cute" when he's obviously a he; "what is it?" not rude at all right? And when I'm taking him to a new place, like an outdoor shopping area that allows dogs, I go really early when there are less people. He's shy, and I take him out to get him exposed to new things. I choose early because it's quiet compared to later in the day, but not too quiet that there aren't people and new noises he hasn't experienced yet. He pulls insanely hard when he's scared. He tries to hide in every nook and cranny he can find, so it makes for quite the sight. I get so much criticism from people who don't know this is part of his training. I walk and if he pulls I stop, he must heel and look at me for direction before we proceed. He'll do what he knows to do, but he shakes really hard while doing it. The whole time I'm working with him, people come up to lecture me. "He's cold, why didn't you bring a sweater for him?" "Can't you see he wants you to pick him up? What a bit*ch!" I'm not kidding on the last one. There are some people who stop and talk to me, and allow me to explain that it's training. They cooperate and pet him on his chest and help make him feel at ease. |
I've gotten the, "oh, she just wants to be carried in a purse!" I tell them, "no, she's a dog. She has four legs and knows how to use them." I don't really care if I'm being rude as I feel their comment was rude to begin with. |
I took my dogs out separately today and had people tell me both times that I shouldn't have them out in the heat. One man stopped his car to tell me that *she* (my boy Teddy) would rather go for a car ride than a walk. |
people are odd! |
How about some thing like "not knowing my dog, I can see where you might think that. But you are wrong and he/she receives the best care there is to give." That way you could make your point without offending anyone - you never know who is a whack job out there. |

With my two I always get goofy comments too. Preston is 16lbs and Paisley is 6, so I get..."Is that one the mommy of the little one?(he will be in BOY clothes!) So is she a puppy? Is she gonna get any bigger? Is he really a yorkie? Is that a yorkie or a silky? Are you sure he is a yorkie? and my favorite (NOT) "WOW they are both so BIG!! Mine/my moms/my siters..... is SO much smaller, it is a t-cup!" I frequently say, REALLY, there is no such thing as a t-cup yorkie, do you mean yours was the runt?" Not that I have any negative feelings about really tiny yorkies, I think they are cute as can be. I just HATE it when people try to act as though their dog is somehow BETTER than mine because it only weighs 3 LBS. |
hahaha...my adult son gets the same kind of dialogue from other walkers to the point he generally moves to the other side of the street now to avoid the nuisance of their comments. Not all are bothersome but, it does get to be too much of an interruption when your whole purpose was to walk your dog & not stop to chat every 5 minutes...kwim?:D |

We don't have sidewalks, so we have to walk in the street. Last evening I was trying to safely wrangle both my boys while picking up poopies when a car full of people stopped to chat about the dogs. Talk about inconvenient! :p |
haha! It's nice to know it's not just in my town that people are weird :P |
Sakura loves any and all attention directed at her and if a person didn't notice her she will hop on her back legs over to them. She hopped over to my brother when he was over yesterday and he laughed so much. Most people just look down and pet her saying how cute she is and such. We haven't gotten any mean comments yet but living in a small town I sure eventually we will. This summer we will be taking walks on the beach and I am hoping we don't get too much attention, I tend to avoid people. :D |

i am amazed at some of the crazy comments i get about bijou as well. most people are like "how cute" or "i love your dog" (i've had people in cars stop traffic and roll down their windows to yell this out).... a lot of times people call her a boy, even though she's bathed in PINK!! but the craziest comment was from some older woman walking past me, who said: "you can't lose weight while walking a dog" (i was giving her a leash correction at the time). haha, i just smiled.... |
I usually just smile and say something like, "Oh, no, she's quite the walker" or "it's okay, I keep water handy for her." :) |

Strangest comment/question I ever got....I swear I'm not making this up...Toby and I were walking into Petsmart and this lady says," I've never seen someone walk a cat on a leash. What kind of cat is that? |
@ Denzilla OMG!! I can't believe someone actually said that!! What in the world kind of household were they raised in? LOL!! The comments one encounters when they own a Yorkie. Anything is possible... |
LOL at crazy people. We get "He's so cute", " Is he supposed to be a Yorkie? Cause I've got one and IT doesn't look like yours...". She is 100% girlie girl with a cute dress on! She's 100% true yorkie! Hate the fact that they want to be all " mine is cuter than yours" um, no. I also hate that people wants to hold her or touch her without our permission, and with their dirty hands that, who knows where those hands were before grr! PS: hate the IT! Its not like I'm asking bout their kids and calling them IT too... |
Some people just don' tthink before they speak....but we always get compliments and never rude ones. |

I've never had any "rude" comments... of course I'm one of those people that you can be horribly mean to and I'd never know the difference. Seriously, I worked with a girl that made a lot of nasty comments to me, but I'd just laugh... finally I frustrated her to the point she started liking me. Anyways, since Smokey is 15 lbs and Chip is 8, I always get asked if Smokey is older because he's bigger. I also get asked a lot what Smokey is mixed with because he doesn't really look all yorkie. I also sometimes get the "They're so big!" comments. I just take it with a grain of salt and consider the source. Sometimes I don't think people are trying to be rude, they just don't know another way of saying it. I have more of an issue with parents controlling their little kids around my dogs than the comments, but that's another rant all together. |
Laci32, he is cute! :) |
AHHH I can't stand it when people assume Levi is a girl. His collars, harnesses, leashes etc are all blue, black or green! And so many people will stop and say, "SHE'S so cute" when he is CLEARLY a boy. I also get a lot of questions about how big he will get (he is two years old and five pounds) and whether he is a Yorkie or a Silky. |
:eyetearssthat's hilarious!!! it's funny b/c sometimes bijou reminds me of a cat ... i swear sometimes i think she's purring.... :) Quote:

I agree with the folks who believe that a Yorkie is a dog and it is not necessary to carry them while outside. They need the exercise and walking is good for them. I have a neighbor who has a Bichon (which is twice the size of my Bailey) who bought a stroller for her dog. I see her walking with the dog in the stroller and I really don't like it. I know alot of Yorkie owners are doing the same thing. I will probably get some flak here about my opinion, but I feel the only time to pick them up outside is if there is a danger (a big dog, etc.). I've never experienced Bailey wanting to be carried when we are outside. She enjoys her walks. |
He loves the attention! My 7-month old, 3 lb Biewer, Hepburn, loves the attention he gets on the street. I live in Berlin, Germany, so every time we go out, whether he is on the leash or in his Celltei bag, everyone makes comments or looks at him. Most of them are about how cute and little he is, sometimes people stop and ask me what kind of dog he is, how old is he, and how big he will get (to which I always respond "I am not quite sure, but certainly not much bigger). The weirdest comment I have ever gotten (and this happened twice) was "Is that a long haired guinea pig?" Why would someone take a long haired guinea pig on a walk to the zoo or on vacation (which is where the comments occured)?? People are so strange!! Also, lots of people ask me where I got him from and how much I paid, which always makes me a bit uncomfortable, as I usually don't share my spending habits with people I don't know. |
I have a huge issue with people picking up Winnie. I don't know what it is, but you wouldn't walk up to a person's child and pick them up!! I get very frustrated because I am not an outspoken person but it's to the point where people are dangerous. Little kids run over and pick her up and she is SO WIGGLY because she gets excited around little persons and then they fall out of their arms. It scares me so much. I don't know how to be mean but in a nice way. They can pet her but I don't get why they run over and automatically pick her up thinking it's ok? Does anyone have suggestions on how to tell people that it's ok to pet but not pick up Winnie and say it in a nice way? |
