I will probably get some flak here about my opinion, but I feel the only time to pick them up outside is if there is a danger (a big dog, etc.). I've never experienced Bailey wanting to be carried when we are outside. She enjoys her walks.

I get very frustrated because I am not an outspoken person but it's to the point where people are dangerous. Little kids run over and pick her up and she is SO WIGGLY because she gets excited around little persons and then they fall out of their arms. It scares me so much. I don't know how to be mean but in a nice way. They can pet her but I don't get why they run over and automatically pick her up thinking it's ok?

Does anyone have suggestions on how to tell people that it's ok to pet but not pick up Winnie and say it in a nice way?

If the person/child is reaching for your dog to pick her up, start with a gentle "no" and put your hand toward your dog to block the person. Smile when you do it. Then calmly say she doesn't like to be picked up by other people and that it is best to leave the puppy on the ground. That isn't rude.

I brought my older Yorkie to PetSmart this weekend and the trainer tried giving Max a treat while I was paying the cashier. She asked if it was okay, but she already had her hand at his mouth. I'm not an outspoken person, so I shocked myself when out of my mouth came "oh no, no, no, no." LOL. I keep Max on a strict diet and I had no idea what she was handing him.

Your dog's safety and health come first. Don't worry about offending anyone.

Most people on YT who own strollers or carriers do not use them to the exclusion of walking their dogs. There are times when the stroller or carrier is convenient and safer, for instance, when the dog has had enough walking or is at a crowded event and risks getting stepped on. Strollers make a nice resting place and refuge from the sun on a long outing.

Most of them are about how cute and little he is, sometimes people stop and ask me what kind of dog he is, how old is he, and how big he will get (to which I always respond "I am not quite sure, but certainly not much bigger). The weirdest comment I have ever gotten (and this happened twice) was "Is that a long haired guinea pig?" Why would someone take a long haired guinea pig on a walk to the zoo or on vacation (which is where the comments occured)?? People are so strange!! Also, lots of people ask me where I got him from and how much I paid, which always makes me a bit uncomfortable, as I usually don't share my spending habits with people I don't know.

Seriously? A Guinea Pig? ugh...

1. " They need to walk". - After they had walked 30 minutes and were tired. I put them in the stroller so I could walk faster and get a workout for myself.

2. "I see you got a LAZY ONE there". - After Teddy got his luxating patella diagnosis I let him ride in the stroller when he is tired walking. I responded by saying "he's crippled". I think I embarassed the guy.

Annoying.

Earlier this week, a husband and his wife were commenting on my dog.

Woman: Oh she's so small and gorgeous
Man: Wow, that is such a small little dog, so cute

I smile of course and say thank you. We start back walking and the man says, "he's just so tiny..he looks like a little rag" :thumbdown

Are you serious?! I didn't even comment. We just kept walking. I also get the is she a "miniature/teacup" I despise that term..so I say, "no she's 6lbs, I like her thick" lol..

futureyorkiemom 06-02-2010 12:50 PM

It seems like everyone I run into think that McKenzie is a boy. I keep her in a puppy cut and she hates bows but, she wears a purple harness, a pink collar and has a pink leash. My new neighbor saw me walking her the other day and said "Hey that is a cute lil guy.!" I just smiled and kept walking.

Agree. We are getting a stroller tomorrow because our oldest, Dany (7 yrs.) has a luxating patella that doesn't require surgery, but she can't walk as long as Addie and Mia. Dany will still get her walk in, but I don't want Addie and Mia to suffer with shorter walks because Dany can't go as far. Putting her in a stroller will also keep our arms free for Addie and Mia if we have to quickly pick them up for whatever reason (like an agressive dog approaching).

Otherwise, as I said before, they have four legs and know how to use them. :D

Xaleia 06-02-2010 01:09 PM

Maggie, I would head them off at the pass. As soon as children or adults make a move to pick up your baby, just smile broadly but loudly say, PLEASE do not pick her up. You may pet her, but she is not allowed to be picked up. If they ask why, (which they won't probably) you can explain the danger of her being so wiggly and when little like they are, they can easily be hurt badly. Sometimes, if I see people approaching, I'll reach down and pick the two littler ones up, just to be on the safe side.

You don't have to be mean or rude at all girl, but your job as Mom is to protect them, so, you have every right to limit who, when and where someone picks up your baby.

I'm one of those people that hates being rude, and I gently tell children all the time, please don't pick her up but if you'd like to pet her/them, they will love you for it:-) I've never had one go against my wishes and we usually have a pleasant chat as children have a gazillion questions, bless their hearts.

mizzwanned 06-02-2010 01:57 PM

I get a lot of attention when walking my dogs and usually I don't dress them up because I don't want any more attention. It bugs me lol When it's ppl with other dogs and they want to say hi I like it but not when it's ignorant ppl that know nothing about them

misslissa 06-02-2010 02:02 PM

i let people pet my dogs because they love the attention but i never let them get picked up. i have got several comments my mom lives in a teeny tiny town in southern ohio and when i go to visit her gatsby never ever fails to get noticed

my family owns a tattoo shop next to the family auto repair shop
well the tattoo shop is nicer and has couches so we hang out there one day Gatsby was sitting on the couch and i was answering the phone(they always manage to put me to work) and a woman with a little girl comes in to have the little girls ears pierced for her birthday my uncle said to get a stuffed toy to hold and come on over she points right to Gatsby and says "i like that one". we let her pet him and gave her a little stuffed dog.

i was walking him on the main road which is actually a highway and we wear stopping to potty and a man stopped his pick up truck and leaned out his window and said a dog that small is a abomination it dose not deserve to live. i picked up gatsby and hightailed into the post office until he was gone he got out of his truck to look for us.
yes i filed a police report but his truck had plates from out of state

PANAMA69 06-02-2010 02:05 PM

Just last weekend, I had Melody in her bag, she love to walk but if I see she get tire, I put her in her bag, anyway this lady, said to me she is so small does she ever touch the floor??, but in a very sarcastic way, and with a sarcastic smile, so I answer to her, of course she is a "dog" and she love to walk, she is not my accessory, plus is perfect when it gets kind of crowded, because, I don't want people to step on her, and that "lady" ask me again, so you think that people are going to step on her? with her sarcastic tone, oh no she didn't it, I look directly at her eyes and told her, believe it or not there is people out there that they don't look where they are going she finally walk out with her husband:mad:
I just can't imagine if, I had my stroller with me, what would she said:rolleyes:, I don't understand why people have to be that way:thumbdown

misslissa 06-02-2010 02:07 PM

it posted my post while i was typing its okay just one more.
i was walking my three dogs and my mom was walking her two we have a
6lb Yorkie
8lb chi weenie
8lb mutt
6lb chihuahua
and a 15 lb pug
a man and his wife wear sitting on a deck in there yard they come up to us and said "you know you could trade in all those little dogs and get a big dog it would be much easier" we looked at her in shock and then the man says
"it just so happens we have 4 great dane puppies for sale"
the the woman "and i would love to take those chihuahuas off your hands"

cherri 06-02-2010 03:43 PM

I think the one I really can't stand is:

"How much did you pay?"

Whaaat? It's awkward. Makes me think they're scoping me out so they can nab my little Yorkie and run. What does it matter how much I paid? You know where craigslist.com and petfinder.com are, go find prices out for yourself . . .

I always tell them she was a gift from my boyfriend. :aimeeyork

Rachael1983 06-02-2010 04:11 PM

I get the teacup question and lots of oh he'd cute comments. Last week a guy at the park says I can tell you take care of your dogand that he just not an accessory. That was an awesome compliment.

Doodlebug 06-02-2010 06:25 PM

I just thought of something else....several people have said "I wish I was your dog" or "when I die I want to come back as one of your dogs". LOL

It happens! I get the "oh she's so cute" when he's obviously a he; "what is it?" not rude at all right? And when I'm taking him to a new place, like an outdoor shopping area that allows dogs, I go really early when there are less people. He's shy, and I take him out to get him exposed to new things. I choose early because it's quiet compared to later in the day, but not too quiet that there aren't people and new noises he hasn't experienced yet.

He pulls insanely hard when he's scared. He tries to hide in every nook and cranny he can find, so it makes for quite the sight. I get so much criticism from people who don't know this is part of his training. I walk and if he pulls I stop, he must heel and look at me for direction before we proceed. He'll do what he knows to do, but he shakes really hard while doing it.
The whole time I'm working with him, people come up to lecture me. "He's cold, why didn't you bring a sweater for him?" "Can't you see he wants you to pick him up? What a bit*ch!" I'm not kidding on the last one.
There are some people who stop and talk to me, and allow me to explain that it's training. They cooperate and pet him on his chest and help make him feel at ease.

i hear ya. i get oh he's so cute for Sadie who is decked out in all pink harness and leash and collar and usually has a pink bow or dress on. and the same for SHE's so pretty for a boy in all blue and boy stuff. ahhh people. but then i do it everyday to someone because it's hard to tell if they don't have dresses or color coded leashes

as for training. Sadie is still in walk training. i do not allow her to greet if she's too excited. i will walk away as many times as it takes for her to walk up to the person calmly and greet without barking or freaking out. people don't understand this and just get in the way when i'm working with her. so aggrivating. i also force her to heal and wait for me or else we stop and stand still. it's a privaledge to walk beside me and pulling just makes everything stop again. she's learning, but it's hard when everyone on the sidewalks wants to ask questions or get involved. even DH gets sick of me training Sadie and wants to just walk. but she has to learn somehow.

I have had people stop their car and say... "What the f.... are you walking your dog in this heat for?" Mind you it was morning and neither one of my dogs were panting...

A few days ago some old man stopped and said basically the same thing to me, and I was infuriated so I leaned over and said to him, "What's it any of your Da** business?" and kept walking. Then the old guy said, "Man aren't we a Bi*** today..." I then said, "Takes one to know one mister" still I keep on walking TRYING to mind my own business. Then the old man said... "You try to tell people that they need to keep there dog in the house when its hot and they bite your head off." I then said to the man.. "Look I didn't ask your opinion on ANYTHING and second YOU are the one who dropped the f bomb on me. So naturally I am going to be just as nasty back to you as you are to me... Especially when I NEVER asked for your opinion on the weather or if you thought I should take my dogs home, so PLEASE leave and let me be." He then acted like he was going to stop his car and get out, I was walking the whole time not even stoping to talk to the man. I then picked up my pace a little. I then reached into my pocket for my cell phone I then took it out and said to the man, "Don't try anything funny mister, I have someone down the road here that will be more then willing to come get me, Oh and I also have NO PROBLEM calling 911 on you." The man then said "Thats the last time I ever help someone" I laughed and said "The next time you better WAIT till someone comes and ASKES for your help, or opinion!! "

The scary think abot all this is I live in the country, so the jerks are all over the place... UGHNESS

i keep telling my mom when she complains about how i'm going to have two yorkies (well one silky) and children how i'm going to handle it all. i simply say...well i'll put em' all in one big double stroller and have a ball. :p

paris pancake 06-04-2010 01:19 PM

yes, the one about carrying them kills me, they have legs people. To make it even funnier my Yorkie is very independent and prefers to walk so when people say that I realize they are clueless. Some people watch to much tv

allyboo 06-04-2010 06:40 PM

Generally, I only really get good comments "she's so cute!" is the most common one, but often people will talk between themselves as we walk by, comments like "awww, look at the little dog!", "I want one of those!", that kind of thing.

The amusing one that sticks in my mind is when I was walking Milly to the grooming parlour for her 5-weekly session, and walked past a lady with an absolutely beautiful rough collie. I commented on how well-groomed she was, and the lady replied "Yours could do with a bit of a tidy up, you should take her to **name of my grooming parlour**".
Nice to know Milly's parlour comes so highly recommended!

diane boden 06-05-2010 10:33 AM

I have occassionally had some-one tell me to let mine walk when I am carrying, the reason? I was carrying Rosie who was then a pup, out walking with Alfie [10 months older], so obviously she couldnot keep up or walk as far.
I did once pass 3 guys sitting waiting to be picked up for work, and one asked why they were walking as weren't they only for carrying around in a purse????
My awnser, no they're dogs, they need walking too.
