| Going to see "Buster" tomorrow!! Well we've decided to go look at this beautiful silky rescue and see if he and Sadie can get along together enough to bring him home. I talked more to the foster mom tonight. found out his birthday is the day before Sadie's birthday...how cool is that?? He's a sweet boy, recently neutered so he might mark or lift his leg a little bit. If we get him i might need some help since i have no "boy" experience here. I know about those belly bands and may need some advice if he's marking a lot, she said he's lifted his leg but he always pees a lot so she thinks it's more of an accident than marking. He was dumped at a groomers by these two ladies that were probably a couple and they broke up. When they broke up they neither one wanted to financially support this dog with his neuter or some skin allergies, so they left him with the groomer at a vet's office. The vet gave him to the westie rescue and here he is needing a home. He's registered with APRI (YUCKY) as a silky terrier and about 8lbs. I don't know a whole lot about silkies so if anyone has advice let me know. they can't be that much different than yorkies can they? Mike and I have really been talking about this a lot. We know we want to try another dog, but we don't want to put out Sadie and if she's not happy and having fun we'll have to give him back to his foster mom. We won't take him home at all unless i'm very confident that they are a perfect match. We have decided that we're just not ready to be parents of human children and that having two dogs would be more fulfilling to each of us. Even when we have babies several years from now, two small toy dogs are not going to be a full house. If we had two labs taking over the whole bed and the couch and the whole house it would be different, but two little dogs won't be that much. We only want one or two kids anyways so having dogs will fill up the space. Is it bad that i'm becoming more and more a dog person and not really into children anymore? After working in daycare i just got burnt out on kids. Sure i want a baby someday. but i'm sure in no hurry. i have years upon years to get there. Anyways. wish us luck as we meet Buster and decide if he's the newest member of the family. I hope we make the right choice for everyone involved. |

| I have no idea of the different traits of silkies versus yorkies, but if Buster and Sadie get along, then it makes no real difference. I hope they get along great. Sounds like you're ready to have another dog. There's no time frame for wanting kids. Some people never want them. And I'm sure you're family will be perfect, kids, dogs, parents. I only have the one yorkie, Charlie, so far, but I have four kids and I know I'll be getting another yorkie at some point. Charlie is only four months old and I'm still learning so much, but I've fallen so in love with him that I know I want more. Keep us posted on what happens with Buster. |

| i also need help with boy names. Sadie's full name is Mickey's Steel Blue Mercedes aka Sadie. I was thinking of a couple names for Buster to change to if we decide to change his name that is. DeFelice's (or his mom or dad's name) Walking After Midnight aka Walker or Bentley or Harley (car names to match Sadie's) Something like (name) Sterling Silver Bentley/Harley waddya think for good boy names that either involve a car of some sort or start with an S. Sawyer. Last edited by RachelandSadie; 05-18-2010 at 06:10 PM. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Good luck, I hope it works out. I recently took in am elderly male Yorkie and I haven't had males in 20 years. He was use to being walked to potty but on his own he started to use the girls pee pads. He has had a couple of accidents, but I have not seen him mark anything. He doesn't really lift his leg when he pees, just kind of squats. He is more snuggly then my other 3. I don't know if it's because he's a male or just became attached to me. Can't wait to hear how it works out.

| Rachel, I'm not sure if you remember or not but I took in a boy rescue on December 7th. He'd been with his foster mom and three other yorkies for a year. Toby is the love of my life (second to my hubby of course) and although it is taking a lot of patience and dedication, I wouldn't trade him for the world. Toby is neutered and when we first got him he too "marked" but whenever we aren't home, he wears a belly band. We've had him almost five months now and he no longer marks. He has had accidents in his belly band but they are far and few between. Dogs don't like to be wet and I think the only time he's had an accident is if we've been gone longer than 6-8 hours and I can count on one hand how many times we've left Speedy and Toby alone that long in five months. As for worrying about them getting along, Toby sat and observed for about 1-2 weeks and then he started coming around. He and Speedy are best buddies now. He still tries to dominate and be the alpha dog and we are still working on that but I have no complaints. He's the lap dog I've always wanted. I have no idea what kind of life he had in the puppy mill but hs foster mom was wonderful to him and when I got him (he was 3 1/2 years old) he had no health issues and is still very healthy. He was 8 lbs when we got him and he now weighs 10 lbs and is holding that weight. It's very possible he and Sadie won't get along at first but DON'T GIVE UP. It takes time. Make sure you continue to give Sadie all the attention she's always received. Toby gets very jealous now whenever I pay attention to Speedy and he butts his way right in there. It's funny and cute but they both get equal attention. I have so many pictures of the two of them sleeping in the same chair and most of the time you can't get a finger between them, they are that close when they are sleeping. Give it some time after you bring him home. It will be a huge change for both of them. Good luck and please keep us posted. We want pics!

| Good luck tomorrow, it's great that you are considering a rescue. I hope they get along and he stays. Remember, sometimes dogs get cranky with each other and have small spats. I usually let them work it out, but never let it escalate. Dogs have their own methods of communicating with each other. I just never let them really fight, but I do let them growl or snark at each other from time to time. Lizzie had the worse bed manners when I first got her, she would just walk all over me (which is okay), but the other dogs really took exception to it! Whenever I have fostered a male dog (Italian Greyhound), the first thing I do is give him a belly band. I can relaxe more and so can the rescue. After a couple days, if the band stays dry, I take it off. The dogs get really good about waiting at the door for me to put the band on or take it off.

| Good luck, I hope everything works out for you. My friend has a Silky and she is so awesome, a sassy little girl but she is always the life of the party (Sophie Kate just loves her). I will keep my fingers crossed that everyone gets along and you have a new member of your family. Oh and don't worry about the becoming a dog person over a kid person at this point, you will know when the time is right.

| If you are going to the other dogs house and bringing your dog there to meet it might not go as well as it could. Maybe suggest a park or something so it isn't a safe place for one dog and not the other. I went with my daughter to a shelter to pick out a dog and we wanted it to play with my dog, at the shelter they didn't play with each other in fact there was growling. Now they are best of friends and when they get together they run and play until they can't move. Best of luck I'm sure all will go well and you will have a new addition to the family. |
