Mine think they are jewelry also. They only have them off for baths. They think they are nekkid without their collars and tags. I use chattiesmom's halters for walking, but for collars, just plain old walmart small dog collars. I've been putting collars on animals for 40yrs and have never had a problem with one getting caught or strangling, etc... I have them fairly tight, I can run two fingers all around between their neck and the collar and I check this absent mindedly everytime I pet them. It would be almost impossible for it to catch on anything as there isn't enough room.

Thank god you found your furkids. I believe in having collars/tags on 24/7. Even at night. If there were a fire and everyone had to get out, wouldn't have time to get the collars on. I thrive on paranoia. I'd probably live longer if I loosened up a bit...LOL

The city I work for is unique. All strays have to go through the police dept in order to get to the shelter. Shelter will not accept them unless an officer brings it in or a dispatcher has seen the animal and assigned it an incident number. That way when one is called in as missing we can check back and see if someone turned a match in. Good system. We have our own no kill shelter and for a city with a population of something around 10,000 it is a system that is still working.

Oh Jodi, I am SO sorry you went through this. I can't imagine how scary that was. I can't find one of my girls in the house and have a moment of panic.
I am so thankful your post had a happy ending, like many said I was almost too afraid to read it.

You know Lou when I sat down to write about what happened I thought about your thread about Adie as well as the collar/no collar debate. It really made me think about what would have happened if they did not have on their collar and tags. What if whoever picked that up didn't know about microchipping? I know that PAWS (our shelter) would have been able to locate me since that is where they were chipped at last summer (Pebbles is not chipped yet:rolleyes:) but they would have had to take them there to be scanned. I could have been hours before that happened. I'm positive that by then I would have either died from a heart attack or been committed! We didn't even know they were gone and they were able to get so far! :eek:

I know that there is always a chance that something could happen but I have never been so happy for a collar and tags when I got that first phone call today.


Again I would like to thank everyone for all of your support and posts for Pebbles, Doodlebug and Bogey. I've been doing nothing but giving kisses and cuddles all day today. They sure all know how much they are loved :wub::wub::wub:

I just ordered collars for my 4 babies. The ones with the slip on tag so it doesn't make noise.

The only thing is that the vet has to scan it...duh!!!

I just took all 4 of mine to the vet ans he didn't scan any of them. All of mine have been there before but my Pebbles hasn't.

I'm so glad to hear your babies are back home, safe & sound!!! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: I tend to always have Miloh wear his collar with tags because one never knows when something like what you experienced can happen. It's better to be safe than sorry. :)

Jodi, bless your heart! You had everyone's nightmare. I hadn't been on in so long, I got an email inviting me back. lol Besides, I needed to order pads from Ryan, so I log on and what the heck!!! The first thing I see is your thread that all three are gone. I knew you would be in agony and I nearly had a heart attack until I read that all were OK and in your arms again. I can't tell you how happy I am that you got them back safely and so quickly. Although, I know that was the longest 45 minutes you ever spent. I bet your poor son felt terrible. I'm glad for his sake too that it worked out well, it would have just added to the horror of it all to have him feel blame for a long time. i've been meaning to get some tags engraved with my phone number incase this very thing happens - i think i will do it tomorrow! this is the very reason i think tags are important.

i started teaching my daughter my phone number when she was 3 - not only how to recite it, but how to dial it on the cell phone (including the area code) since you usually have to dial that first. unfortunately, dogs can't tell people their phone number - so tags are a blessing in cases like yours.

Jodi, thank goodness for collars and tags! I am so thankful your day ended better than it started.

On a side note, for those of you that plan on getting tags for your dogs, I put "needs daily meds" on their tags even though they don't need daily meds. That way, if someone ever finds them and even thinks about keeping them, maybe they will see that message and figure it would be too expensive to keep them if they need daily medicine and make that call to the rightful owner. I ALWAYS put those three words on their tags. Just food for thought..................

Thank goodness you have them wear tags! Really made me think, I have both chipped and they wear tags, but they just wear their rabies and homeagain tags, which do not have their names on them. I think I'm going to have a 3rd tag made with my information on them.

Oh my goodness...my heart was racing as I read your story. I'm SO glad they are safe and back with you. I have a tag on my Muffin, but I lost Boomer's when I gave him a new collar. They are both chipped, but I for sure am going to get him a new tag asap.

OMGosh...what a terrible ordeal for you, but I'm so glad it was a happy ending! It's bad enough to lose track of one, but losing all dogs at once is unimaginable! So glad your babies are right where they belong! I'm just guessing here, but I bet when you finally got your heart to stop racing and able to calm down, I bet you felt physically and emotionally drained! Bless your heart!

mine says 'need meds daily' also. the front of the tags are red with a white cross. they look like medic alert tags. I do it for the same reasons.

I still can't imagine the terror you must have gone through gathering up all your furkids. What a horrible experience and I'm still amazed at the miracle of how quickly you were able to get them all back!

What a nightmare!! I am soo happy that you got them all back. Gates are scary, it just takes a second for those little guys to dissapear. Not like looking for a Rottie.

Phew!! What a relief!! I must get Diji a tag asap! He has a little collar but no tag yet. I was waiting for him to get a little bit bigger.

The other day when I was out, I left Diji with my mom and brother.Diji fell asleep on my brothers black bean bag and his black coat blended in so well that no one saw him on it. My mom searched the whole house over and thought he was missing. They were both incredibly anxious and were flipping coins to decide who would tell me Diji was gone... To their relief (and mine) Diji woke up and wandered still sleepy into the lounge where they were sitting.

I don't even want to imagine my life without Diji. I love him toooooo much!

That is such a great idea... I always worry because, heaven forbid Diji goes missing, he is so precious and cute people will just want to keep him. That's why I've been struggling to decide whether to get him chipped or not. Because the majority of people won't take him to be scanned they'll just keep him. Thanks for the idea I'm definitely including those three words on his tag. :aimeeyork
