Is your dog tatooed? With the hot conversation being collar - no collar lately I am wondering if anyone has had their dog tatooed. One of our vets tried it on his dog but it came off. Evidently he did it wrong and didn't go deep enough? Where would you put a tatoo? Inside the thigh or ear? Does anyone have an opinion on this practice? I know microchips are the way to go but Adie's came out! |

BUT they can migrate and it could of moved to any part of her body. So i would have her scanned from head to toe, every inch.. And if its in an area where it would be hard to find then I would have another one put in and use the Home again ones, they don't migrate.. Anyhow, all I can really tell you about tattooing is it has to be done by someone who knows how to do it right and has done it a bunch of times. And it should be done in the ear where it can be found easily. Tattooing is painful to the dog and i personally do not think it's worth doing. Not now with having chips. |
Nope :) Couldn't imagine ink (or whatever it is) on my girl, but that's just me. The chip came out??? |
No, I wouldn't do it to myself so I wouldn't do it to my dog. |
Tattooing used to be the way for "permanent" ID'ing an animal. But it's a bit disfiguring. It's done under anesthesia; ears have been done, but then they've also been loped off to hide the number. The inside of the thigh is another choice place, because most thieves won't cut off a leg to hide the number. Another common place is inside the lip. Personally, I'd rather risk losing my dog than tattooing them. That's me. They wear collars for tags, and halters for walks. They're also chipped. A chip that's been inappropriately injected can migrate, but I can't imagine how it could come out. Has your dog been scanned "all over" for it? Another possibility is that it was defective, but they should have scanned for it immediately to make sure (my vet scanned before it was injected). If the chip has migrated, I think I'd have another one installed in the proper location (between the shoulder blades) - where people would look for it. Keep the other chip's number and where it's migrated to ... it can be an "ace in the hole" if you can tell them where the second chip is should the occasion arise. |

Yes Adie's chip came out. And yes, I had her scanned from head to toe. I don't know "when" it came out. It could have been shortly after it was placed but I can't say for sure. I need to get another one put in. I haven't even considered having my little ones tatooed. I was just curious if anyone else had. I can imagine that it is a painful process! |
No, I would never tattoo my dog. He's microchipped and wears collar for ID. |

I do my own !!!! I have a small tatoo set that I use to tatto my puppies prior to selling them. I just tatoo 1 number such as 1,2,3, etc I only do one ear and it has never had to be re-done. All of my adults are tatooed. the set cost $25.00-$30.00 and uses black ink. I don't think it hurts any more than a microchip because I only do 1 number. |

Radar has a tattoo on his belly and his breeders did it and I've had him awhile now and so far it's still readable. I still need to get my dogs chipped YIKES! Brookie will be chipped when she goes in for a teeth cleaning next week :) No collars in my house only a harness when we are in public or on walks... Donna |
One of my Biewers from Germany has a tatoo in the ears. I truthfully don't like it--and it certainly would be of no help here in the U.S. because I don't think there is a registry for tatoos in Germany--the microchip is a better idea, imho. |
This is truly an interesting subject to me. I still don't intend to tattoo my dogs but I see an advantage to it. Let's say the dog gets out and someone finds it and runs an ad in the Lost and Found. I can see how simple it would be to describe the dog and the tattoo to quickly prove ownership. You can't argue with that! Thanks for the information. |
Yes, but if a dog is microchiped....the dog can be taken to a vet, shelter and have the chip read. The owner should have the information in their possession. |

Radar is from a Canadian breeder, it's my understanding that tattoing is still common practice in Canada. |

Mary, I should talk to you more about this.. This is something I did not know.. Although my Rainbow IS already microchipped (she is the Mom of Sonny) Sonny is NOT yet microchipped... what is the best age to get it done?? Also does it need to be done prior to showing?? or only prior to breeding (IF he is bred) |

Other than the usual that has to be done prior to breeding, you will need to have him DNA'd Oh have been studying on your pedigree. |

BTW.. I ordered the Breeders Standard and got all of my dogs info in it. and as much of thier pedigrees into it as I have info on. Have been trying to play around with it a little each day. I also ordered (and received) 2 of the videos from the yorkie club website (Best in Show and Show Preparation) Great training videos! |
All of my dogs are microchipped now but years ago tattooing was the way to permanently ID a dog with the AKC. When tattooing it is usually done on the inside of a thigh or ear. I personally would go with inside the thigh and had it done by the vet. I much prefer microchips. |
Ouch, pass. |
Racing greyhounds are all tattooed. So I have 4 ex-racers and they all have tatts. Most are not legible at this stage in their lives. And believe me they are done right and with a lot of knowledge. So with it not being a permanent thing, **again still there but all numbers are not legible**and are in both ears** I would go a different route. |
I thought that one of the reasons that microchipping became more popular was because unethical breeders and thieves could have a tattoo altered? I had my Raley chipped last month. He didn't even wimper....he has the ResQ chip. He wears a collar (with his rabies/ID tag) only when we are in a public place but of course he uses a harness as well because he is always leashed in public. |
I am having my girls chipped when they go in for spay end of May (had to reschedule...AGAIN). I could never have them tattooed, I'm too big of a chicken for that.;) |

Just curious has anyone heard anything regarding microchipping and the negatives that are coming out now about it? |

I been thinking about this for while now I want to ID my dogs but I read a story about microchip causing cancer and my friends dog has it and I feel it in her neck it's really gross. My dogs are so small I don't like putting collars on them and if they are stolen collars can be removed. Been thinking about a tattoo there are no side effects I think it's a good idea nothing wrong with it as long they get put under to get it done might get it done when my little girl gets her teeth cleaned. |
It's compulsary to have your dog tattooed here. When we picked up Sandy, he's already tattooed. Microchip is however optional but Sandy is microchipped because we travel with him outside the country quite often. |
I have a friend that took in a cat that was left behind when the owners moved away. She took it to the Vet and she had a tattoo on her belly. That vet did not know how to go about reading the tattoo to see who owned the cat. They did scan the cat for a chip. Makes me wonder how many other vets don't know what to do with a tattoo on an animal that is lost? |
