could he have been abused? I brought an 11 month boy yorkie almost 2 weeks ago for a playmate for my little girl Tia. Anyways he has been fantastic in bonding with her and me however when my sons, 22 yr old, 19 yr old and my husband go to stroke him he starts to pee. He also cowers when any of the men approach him quickly. im really starting to think that maybe the man and lady whom I brought him off of abused him , I hope not , but what do you guys think? |
I think you are probably right, especially since he does this with the men. That is so sad. Why did they rehome him? He will need time to adjust, training and lots of TLC. |
It does sound like he has a fearful response around men. :( As horrible as it is that he might have been treated poorly by men in the past, he is so lucky to be somewhere better now. I'll bet with some time your husband and sons can gain his trust. |
That's classic submission. He may have been abused and is just flat out scared of men. Or he may have had the fear of God instilled in him by a man and he's trying to show he's not challenging authority. Either way, may I suggest that the males in your family shower a little extra attention on him so he understands he has nothing to fear? Extra treats? A head ruffling once in a while? Walks? Hopefully, he will get over it, but it may take some time. |

My Stormy was always afraid of men. She was just terrified of every male that came around. She was excellent with children and boys under 13. |
Thank heavens he's safe with you now. Yes, I would agree his fear of men IMO would mean some man scared him. He's young and has to learn to trust the men in your family. He will, with love, gentleness and lots of treats. I would let the men in your family take over feeding him his meals. Food is the most important commodity to a dog and those that feed them are important to them. I am sure in time he will love them and trust them. Good luck, |
I saw one that was submissive with men, but not with women. I suppose the key question would be: were there men at the previous home? |
