Why doesn't this country get more DOG FRIENDLY???
 

I'm so tired of not being able to travel because nothing lets dogs in!!! :mad:

I would never be able to board my little girl in some stupid kennel with no carpets or couchs, BUT my own parents are putting up a resistance to helping take Sadie for a simple weekend as well!!

I understand if they were working or if they had a dog that didn't get along with Sadie, but they have nothing to do.

And why can't I just take her with me??? We want to go to Chicago to my nephew's christening. But i don't think it's a good idea to have a travel nervous dog go 8 hours in a car, then either get stuck in a kennel in a hotel in such a big city because she can't go in places with us. Why can't dogs go into a cathedral or a restaurant with owners, children get to go inside in their baby seats and strollers. Why do i have to leave my precious doggie in a travel kennel in a hotel room that might get stolen or hurt in order to go anywhere with her.

I'm at a loss now, no one wants to help us out and take her for the weekend and we really have no way of taking her with us. Am I doomed to live in MO forever and never travel again despite my traveling urges i always have????

Having a dog definitely effects your ability to travel. When my daughter was married we all stayed in a wonderful bed and breakfast in South Carolina that wouldn't allow pets. I had to board Lady for the weekend.

It was hard for me to understand why a tiny little thing like Lady who was housetrained, didn't bark, etc. wasn't welcome. I spoke to the owner of the B&B who explained that in fairness to all their guests, especially those who may be allergic, they couldn't allow pets. She recommended a boarding kennel in town that their guests used.

There was a pet friendly motel in town but I have since learned that people with pets are put in the same rooms they reserve for their smokers. No way did I want to deal with that!

We may love our dogs, but we can't expect that everyone does. Having a pet complicates travel plans and certainly makes vacations much more expensive. It's just part of pet ownership.

Have you considered a pet sitter? It is as much, probably more, than boarding (I have mine spend the night), but worth it to me to know Lady and my cats are in their own home, not in cages.

I remember your family wasn't crazy about you even visiting with Sadie when she was a puppy. I don't think you can expect them to pet sit. How about a friend? I know Sadie has had some play dates. Maybe you could trade pet sitting?

I just asked our old neighbor from our first home that i have had feed her on a night we weren't home until late and they loved it, they dog sit for all their children all the time and she said so long as they are free they should be able to help with her and she was no trouble the last time.

I trust her with human kids someday so she'd do great with fur kids. Plus Sadie's new diet of NV raw is easier to put out and feed than the home made kind.

Hopefully it works out. I really don't like to have to board her, she's so little and so not used to being alone :(

That sounds wonderful! It is so much less stressful if they can stay in their own home. That's why I end up paying twice as much for pet sitters!

in the year i have had Gatsby we have only spent one night apart and he was in the hospital i would never go somewhere that did not allow him i have even stopped shopping at chains for the most part because of policy (thankfully we have a lot of small businesses in town) i know this dose not help but i would make sure you have a extremely trustworthy person to watch her

I'm glad you found a good sitter, that's key. I can board Thor at his daycare, so he gets to stay at someone's house and be spoiled while I am away (which is good for consistency, since he gets spoiled with me as well).

I do wish places were more dog friendly. I guess I'm a little spoiled myself, because I lived for a long time in New York, where dogs are allowed EVERYWHERE, even nice restaurants. Now I live in San Francisco, which everyone says is dog friendly, but I don't think it's that great. We don't have a single dog park specifically for small dogs! The few official dog parks are an embarrassment - no grass, just big, dusty squares. And other places where dogs are allowed off-leash are generally not fenced. And even with our limited spaces, there are still stiff-butts who complain about dogs. It's true a lot of people let their dogs off-leash where it's not allowed, but that's because our dogs don't have anywhere else to run around.

I think there should be a rule that if you can pick your dog up, you can take it with you inside.

if you lived near me, I'd say to bring her to my place - we'd have a little yorkie party! sorry...I will say that for the restaurants, it's cause food is served that animals aren't allowed in...sucks, but that's sorta how regulations are.

I only know of one place in England that is good for dogs in general and that's Lincolnshire. When we go on holidsy to Ingoldmills near Skegness
the cafe's let dogs in, a lot of shops put water outside and allow dogs, and it's very dog friendly. I can understand a lot of places though it's because of the hygiene laws.

Personally I think it would be wonderful to take my furbabies any where I want to go. But there are some people who are allergic to animals. My hubby has severe asthma and being around some dogs set him off. Not to mention cats. Eyes get swollen, red and teary and he can not catch his breath when he is even around a cat for just a little time. Would it be fair to let dogs in places and not cats? There are some people that have these same symptoms around dogs. Where do we draw the line?

I would think that a nice medium sized motor home would be the answer to traveling with a pet. Just park it in your familys yard when you vist or get a spot in a state campground for the night.
Even a truck camper gives you more options when traveling with a pet.

Invest in a very gorgeous dog carrier bag that LOOKS like a real purse on one side and has a screen for ventilation on the other. But if your baby is a barker you will have problems. She just may also enjoy the ride. Stop and let her walk for a bit every two hours.

I for one, understand your frustration. I'm in the same boat. I would die
to go back to Disney with my daughter and family. I've not been there
with my youngest granddaughter yet. I have been there 3 times with
her sister and I feel so bad not to be able to share in her joy.
I don't trust my other daughter because her yard is not fenced in and
her pug runs the neighborhood. To find someone for 10 days to stay in
my home is impossible. I would never kennel him again. Did once when
he was 10mos old for three days and he picked up a parasite.
So I guess I'm not going anywhere:( The only one I trust him with
is the daughter I want to go away with:aimeeyork

Seriously? These are sacrifices that we make as pet owners. I\'d be willing to be that the number of people who want to take their dogs everywhere they go are definately the minority by quite a large margin. They are not "allowed everywhere" for a plethera of very valid reasons. :thumbup: And stating that dogs should be allowed in places if children are allowed? :confused: Dogs are dogs, children are humans. There is no comparision. I just don\'t get that logic at all, but I see it stated quite frequently.

I would never board my pets either. Thankfully, I have a plethera of friends, family, neighbors who are generally willing to sit them while I\'m gone. But I would never get mad or upset with them if they weren\'t willing to do that, for whatever reason. My dogs are MY responsibility, not theirs.

I agree that I think there should be more dog friendly parks and recreational opportunities. I don\'t think that every store, hotel and restaraunt should start allowing them in though.
