is my yorkie a teacup?
 

Hi there! Im new to this website but i have learned a lot already just by reading at the discussions. My baby bella is almost 6 months old but she is only 2.5 lbs. She have been consistently on this weight for 2 months now and she doesnt seem to be gaining much. she is very picky eater. Aside from her dry food i also give homemade wet food. Unfortunately she doesnt eat this all the time. So do you think she is a teacup cause the breeder never confirmed.

You're new, so people should be kind: around here, the term "tea cup" isn't used much, because it's sales terminology, usually inaccurate or misleading and designed to separate you from your hard-earned $$$.

Yorkies are Yorkies: there is a "standard", and then there are some who are larger - or smaller - than standard. Sometimes there's joking around about the bigger ones being "tea pots" instead of "tea cups" ;), but it's just joking around.

Little ones are adoreable, but also very fragile and need extra care so they don't get hurt. Your pup is still young, and probably still growing. She may surprise you yet and add a whole whopping pound or so before she's done :D My Bella didn't stop "growing" until she was over a year old. Just make sure that what you're feeding your furbaby is nutritious and has all the stuff she needs to grow strong and healthy.

I don't think Melissa was trying to be cruel, we both took the heat last time, when we tried to explain people don't know. She was trying to lighten the situation, that will surely follow when some get on here and educate her. ;)

Do you now the weights of your puppies parents or how many pups were in the litter? She may be just a petite pup, at 6 months you usually have an idea of the full grown size give or take 8oz. Sounds like she will be uner 5lb

She wasn't laughing at the OP, it's kind of an inside joke if you've been around Yorkietalk very long, the t-cup threads use to get really long with so much fighting. This doesn't happen so much anymore. We are not laughing at achie74, because most of us didn't know much about what the term meant until we found Yorkietalk.

achie74, welcome to Yorkietalk! The reason people don't like the term teacup is because unscrupulous breeders use it to act like there are different classifications of yorkies. The standard size is 7 pounds and below, so the yorkie doesn't have different classifications like some breeds who may have three classifications. The yorkie is considered a toy breed. Most good breeders will not breed a dog under 5 pounds, it's too hard on the mama, but sometimes they produce smaller pups. There are other breeders who breed for tinies, and may even do things like withholding proper nutrition from a pregnant mama to get tiny pups, this can be disastrous for the future of the puppies. Some tinies are healthy and were just born to be smaller, some tinies are unhealthy and may have an illness that stunts their growth. A dog under four pounds, will take extra care on your part. You need to use steps and teach the dog how to use them, they can injure their legs from jumping off a couch. Also, tinies seem to have more teeth problem, so start brushing early, and remove those baby teeth when you have your dog spayed. Please don't consider breeding a tiny, it's just too dangerous, and spaying is important because I've read of too many accidental pregnancies where a much bigger dog mated with the tiny. Remember it only takes a second or two. Best of luck!

Welcome to YT:) You're yorkie sounds like a little one. She is not however any type of dish, spoon, cup, etc;) Yorkies are supposed to be under 7lbs(some get bigger) so... she is a yorkie.

The reason your breeder didn't confirm that she was a teacup was because that term is used mostly for marketing to the uneducated buyer, or to make a puppy seem more valuable.

As far as eating goes, I try to make sure my little one eats often, even if it is just a little bit at a time. And as long as she isn't loosing weight or doesn't seem skinny I wouldn't really worry. She will probably fill out over the next year, she may not get a whole lot bigger or she might surprise you;) that is half the fun, you never really know for sure till they are done growing and changing what exactly you will get.

Your wee one may be destined to be a tiny, or she can take a growth spurt and just all of a sudden grow to be of average size for a yorkie.

This breed is so unpredictable, average canine growth charts just need to ignored when it comes to yorkie growth. It's all very dependent on this puppy's pedigree and even then she may just be a throw back from one of her distant relatives. If she's healthy, that's all that matters, just a bit more care needs to be taken when you have a tiny.

Oh! I have a girl right here that is 6 1/2 pounds that was approximately 3 pounds until she was a year old. Then bam......a growth spurt......

In the future.......try not to use the word teacup...my favorite phrase is "Teacups come with handles and saucers."
