Did I pay too much? Lately I keep hearing friends and family telling me that I paid way too much for my pup. I looked around for a few months before settling, and thought I did well. I got a beautiful, show quality pure-breed Yorkshire Terrier - Female and 3lbs exactly at 9.5 months and it was $2000. Does this seem high? What exactly qualifies a Yorkie to be in the $8000 mark or down to $1000? I know it is a lot of money, but I knew I was paying for Health! She is perfect w/ NO health issues, but friends still look at me like a fool for paying so much for a dog. Can anyone relate to this? Thanks for your advice!!! Yorkie's ROCK! :animal36 |
well, i paid $ 1800.00 for lexi, and i would pay more if i had too. i just love her. |
I don't think this is a "get what you pay for" situation. I look at it this way: you pay for what you want. :D |
It seems like alot, but if you are happy with her and you got exactly what you wanted ,I wouldn't care what anyone thought or said. Plus she is healthy! Since Yorkies range in such big price differences and where you live is also a factor, you will see a wide range in prices. I live in San Diego and have a friend looking for one, but her husband will not let her paid over $1000.00. Needless to say- she is still looking after 4 months. :( |
The most important is that you love your little one . |
I get that all the time. What I trip out on is I always get asked that question,,,,, how much did you pay? And when I tell them them,,, most have the same remark,,,,,,, what the hell were you thinking? Do you know what you could have done with that money? Or the one I get the most,,, I wouldn't pay that much for a dog. I tell ya people can be very rude! I just have to step back and keep my mouth shut. I paid $1,400 and he was worth every dime!!!! People are going to have their own opinion,,, that's all it is "an opinion" Don't listen to them. As long as your happy that's all that matters. |
I paid $1200 for my German Shepherd and people always tell me I paid too much. They just aren't into dogs like I am and probably don't understand how much a gauranteed, high quality, healthy, well socialized pup costs. |
:animal36 The question is, are you happy? You spent that money to get the pup that you wanted....you are obviously happy with her size and are at ease with the health of your pup's parents. Who cares what your friends and family say and think? They didn't spend the money, they don't have the clean up after the pup, they don't have to train her, and they too don't reap the loving rewards that you do. I paid $700 for my oldest, who is actually a mix. I know, crazy right!?!??! But I was completely in love with him! My second and newest pup is a Biewer Yorkie and I paid $3,500 for her. Never in my life did I think I would ever spend that kind of money on a dog, but I just had to have her. Of course, I haven't told many people what I actually spent on her....especially my step-father who believes that $100 for a dog is the limit! :D Just enjoy your baby and think of all of the love that $2,000 bought you! :animal36 |
It is simply what you are willing to pay, no more no less! The prices range from about 300-???, it is up to you what you are willing to pay. If you are happy and could afford to pay $2000.00, than great. Just ignore them. Love to see a picture. Sue |
I would pay that much for what you got! Probably wouldn't pay much more but that sounds like a fair price to me. I do know that lots of people pay in the 1000 dollar range for pet quality. Guess it depends too on the area you live in as far as price and availablity...but I wouldn't worry a whole lot about what others think you paid for anything. :) |
You know, it amazes me why people think "how much did you pay?" is an appropriate question to ask - especially from "strangers" (except on this board of course.... that's what we're here to discuss - anything about our Yorkies that we want to). I had a few family members ask me and I only answered the ones that would "understand". The others I just told "I paid enough and she is worth every penny!". We paid $950 for Tatum and it was hard to do considering I had paid $350 for my toy poodle 15 years before. It all depends on where you live too. That's roughly the going rate for Yorkies in my area. Just try a non-commital answer when the next person asks you if you think they'll "judge" you for it and it bothers you. |
I paid $2000 for Desi, she is now 10 months 3 1/2 lbs and she is not show quality, but not to me.. she is worth much more in my eyes.. |
2000 for a small female sounds about right to me. It could have been alot more. I paid 1200 for my little 4lb female but that is in Indiana. |
I also paid a pretty penny for my two yorkies........Beamer & Abbey! When people ask how much I paid I tell them ..........."my heart"! Yuppers I paid with my heart! I love my babies.......my older kids call them their brother & sister! PS.........Abbey is expecting at the end of this month! gonna be a gramma! Luve my furbabys! |
You just have to compare it to something so they get it. For instance, for one school year, I pay well over $1,000 for books that I rarely look at and will never use again, so spending that much for a dog that you love and will have for several years is well worth it, IMO. I would probably be tempted to say something b*tchy, but I'm gonna have to work on keeping those thoughts inside my head, lol. |
I paid 1k for mine. I think this is the price range. I wouldn't have paid more than that though. But thats just me and my own budget. You can definitely find good yorkies for under 2k but you got what you wanted so don't worry about what people say. I hate when strangers ask me that question. I think its VERY rude. I have started telling people "I don't know how much she was, she was a gift". But I don't know how people don't think its rude. My entire family who are not animal lovers and own no pets at all think I'm crazy for paying that much for an "animal" as they say but who cares. |
I know, I paid the $2,000. and didn't get the 'perfect dog' but I had met the breeder, been to her house 4 times, and felt good about it. Her legs are too long, her hair matts but she is just a little dolly. She is 6.5 months old and is 2.4 lbs. I DO love her. I had a yorkie for 15 years that we lost this summer so I know what wonderful companions they are. I paid $350. for her!! Yes, these little ones cost more but what are you going to do? I think it is too much money, the breeders know they can get away with it because we love our YT's and will do about anything to get one!! |
I only paid 1000 for Bia and shes pet quality. When I first got her and people asked me how much I paid I would tell them and they were taken back because they couldn't see themselves paying that much for a DOG! I think most people feel that way, they think It's just a DOG, they could go get one at the shelter for 50 bucks, thers no way they would spend even a fraction of that. 1000 bucks is a lot of money and I could have done a whole lot more with it than buy a dog is what was running through their heads I'm sure. Unless people are into the same thing as you are they aren't going to understand, and probably never will, but as long as you know thats all that matters. I think 2000 for a healthy show quality dog who is a little under the breed standard in weight is a good price. I think you did well!! |

I only paid $600.00 for Miko and people still think that's alot. Most people don't understand, unless they are dog lovers and are willing to pay whatever for what you want.! |
If you are happy then you didn't pay too much. One breeder I talked to said you either pay it up front or pay it later in vet bills. I thought that was a bit harsh, but I know what he was TRYING to say. Of course we paid $1700 for Bandit and he died a month later, so paying a lot does not guarantee a healthy pup. When people ask what you paid just smile and say "not anywhere NEAR what she's worth to me" that should shut them up. |
You got a beautiful, show quality pure-breed Yorkshire Terrier! No thaths not a lot, and you can tell your friends, she's not a dog, she is a member of your family. I did the same thing. Princess was $2500, I wasn't going to show her, I just fell in love with her little face, and had to have her. By the way, when I told my husband about her, he said no way. The next day when he called from his office to see what I was doing. I told him I was playing with Princess, my new puppy. That was over two years ago. Princess is now Daddy's little girl. Her price was high, but I had to have her. And I would do it again!~ :) |
If you are happy with the little one than you didn't pay too much . |
I too have paid as little as 800 and as much as 2500 for my Babies, It just depended on where and when and what I wanted. Now as to the rudeness of people asking how much I paid. I have found that only those that critize ask that question. What is it with judging everything in this world that we love by dollars? There are some thing you don't put a price tag on and puppy love is among them. I have a standard answer for anyone that asks that question who is not a yorkie owner. I simply smile , look them in the eye and ask "why do you want to know" They never have a answer, Then I add "Just like Mastercard, they are priceless" This usually ends the conversation. This cracks me up,,, how people can be so rude and think its ok.. Maybe you should go around asking ,,,, How much was your car? How much did you pay for your house? You paid HOw much for this wedding? It all depends what your into,,, I myself think its crazy that people spend tens of thousands on a Wedding,,but HEY, if thats what ya want,,Go for it. But dont worry about what I spend my money on,,, Until you pay my bills,,,( which noone has offered to do!) Its none of their business! :D |
I paid $500 for Dixie and $700 for Daisha. Dixie had a hernia so the price was discounted. Neither are of show quality - but that is fine because I wanted them for pets only. I was not interested in breeding either. They DO have papers, but the are not important to me -- I know they are pure bred and they have well been worth the money. I agree it has alot to do with where you live. In my area, the normal price is $300-$900. I have not heard of any within this area being more than that. When you look at a dog, you can't tell how much a person paid for it.... I'd just say if you feel ok with paying $2000 for a dog - then its your business. Just be happy and love that little one like crazy!!! :) |
I paid $2200 for Lexi and $1400 for Tori and a little over a week ago we considering purchasing a pup $8500 with an open soft spot. I don't care what people think, I know what I want and what I can afford. I don't mind telling people here what I paid because we all have the same passion, however I don't tell friends and family. I don't feel it is any of their bussiness. |

Might be cheaper in different parts of the country??? but I think you did well! In California if you wanted that quality of dog you might have to get on a waiting list :) AND pay a little more. |
