| getting as yorkie for the first time Hello, I am new to this site... and new to yorkies. I have some questions... What do you feed them? I feed my cats and ferrets Evo because I know that's a high quality food, would it be okay to feed that to a yorkie? What kinds of toys do they like to play with? We really want to spoil our yorkie :P Are they cuddly? My mom really wants a dog that will cuddle with her. Do they enjoy swimming? My mom's friend has a yorkie that likes to swim, but I'm not sure if this is common with yorkies. How often do they need to be walked? And should I use a leash or a harness? Is it okay to leave them outside in the yard? (on a leash or fenced-in) Are they difficult to train? That's all the questions I can think of right now. Sorry if some of them are dumb.... I haven't owned a dog since I was 4, so I figured I'd better try to learn all I can. If there's anything else you would like to add, it would be greatly appreciated. **edit** Forgot to ask how they are with other animals, particularly cats and ferrets. | Our 12 year old Yorkie lives with a 125 pound Cane Corso. She is the boss and rules the house. We feed ours Iams Low Residue. Little from a can with the Dry Kibble. Her digestive system has been trouble free since we put her on it years ago. She likes squeeky toys, of all sizes, and nylabones to chew on. She prefers the softer ones with Chicken flavor. She hardly makes a dent in them. When we had a place in AZ and had a pool, she used to have her own Float board, and she did like to swim. She also liked her special innertube flotation device. If we were in the water, she had to be with us. Never leave them alone outside. Thieves, Hawks, Owls, Coyotes. They can easily be carried away. Do they Cuddle? Ours sure does. Harness for sure...no choke chain. Ours used to walk 2-3 miles when young. Now she will walk a few blocks and then get put in her carry bag or stroller for the rest of the 2-3 mile walk. They can be stubborn, but are very smart. Mine is smarter than I am, as I am running for her...she has a way of telling us what to do! I was never a fan of small dogs until my wife said we are getting a Yorkie over 12 years ago. Would not trade her for anything. I still like large dogs, but this is one big dog in a tiny body. Best of luck. I am not a Yorkie expert, so I am sure others will chime in. |

| Welcome to YT! What do you feed them? I feed Jackson Fromm Surf and Turf (grainfree). He also likes Acana and Nature's Variety. What kinds of toys do they like to play with? Jackson's not HUGE on toys but the ones he likes are squeaky (balls, plush, anything that squeaks). He also likes plastic and rubber frisbees. Are they cuddly? I wouldn't really call Jackson "cuddly." He's definitely a Mama's boy, and will cuddle up on the couch with me while watching TV but it's usually just for 20 minutes or so before he hops off and gets cozy in his dog bed. He sleeps on my bed every night by my feet. Do they enjoy swimming? Jackson LOVES to swim! My dad has a pool and he jumped in multiple times (while we were in it). I'm gonna be investing in a lifejacket for next summer though so he can go longer. How often do they need to be walked? Jackson's got a lot of energy (he's not hyper) but we try to go for a walk every day, minimum of 30 minutes (not in this winter weather though!) We also go to the dog park 1-3x per week (for visits of 2 hours usually). And definitely use a harness! Even Jackson is 12lbs so he's larger but his neck is so fragile. Weekends during the summer we walk 4-5 miles. Is it okay to leave them outside in the yard? (on a leash or fenced-in) My dad has a fenced in yard and we just let the dogs outside by opening the door and letting them go out to potty. We don't let them stay out long without checking on them though, and in the summer time we're often outside alot anyways so they just stay out with us. My house we live in most of the time does not have a fence but 3 acres of farmland and I attach a 50 foot training leash to him and let him have lots of room. Are they difficult to train? Jackson has been the EASIEST dog to train out of all the dogs I've been around and tried to trick train. Jackson knows over 20 tricks now and continues to learn every day. He's sooo fast at learning new tricks (fun things: play dead, get me a tissue, limp, etc) but he also excels in obedience (stay, come, etc). He's a blast to work with and the most willing to learn (I've tried training tricks to Boxers, Jack Russell mix, Doxy-mix, and cockapoo).
