| Tearing up his toys My little Patrick is 11 months old now and he has started destroying all of his toys. I understand that he is still very young and teething but I was wondering if this behavior will continue. If a toy has a squeaky thing in it he will take it his "lair", chews a little hole in the material, removes most of the stuffing, removes the "squeaky thing" and finally removes the thing that makes the squeaky thing squeak! It is as if Patrick thinks the whole point of the toy is to get the squeaky out and kill it! He doesn't eat any of the toy, just makes it look like it exploded!! I have started putting the damaged toy under his nose and saying "What did you do?" in my "you were bad" voice. He seems to understand that this behavior is unexceptable, but he has continued doing this for weeks now. One of the sad parts of all this is that I have a seven year old rescue who loves and cherishes his toys like no other dog that I have ever owned. Niko carries his favorites around the house, making a happy little grunting noise, which is so touching. But the "evil" Patrick has pretty much de-stuffed all of Niko's toys too. What can I do to insure that this is not going to be a lifetime habit? Any suggestions?

| Don't have any words of advice, but I can sympathize with you. My Sarge acts like it's his mission in life to get the squeaker out of every stuffed toy he's ever had. The funny thing is he loves the toys, but it's like doggie crack cocaine to him---he just can't stop. Cathy, mom to Sarge and Lexi (Little Bit) |

| My understanding is that the "squeaky" can sound like an injured animal to some Yorkies. Mine did that for a bit, but has backed off as he got older. I make sure that the fluffy toys I get him are very strong and there is a line of plush toys with squeak boxes that claim they won't be destroyed. I got him one and he tried very hard but was not able to. Sometimes they do it out of boredom and sometimes trying to show who is boss. I think it may just be puppy still. |

| Widgets joy in life is to tear the stuffing out of the toys and kill the squeaker. He is almost 2 and has done this ever since I have had him. I have yet to find a toy that he can't destroy. some toys take longer to destroy but eventually he will get the squeaker and the stuffing out till all he has left is the empty shape of the toy. |

| The smallest of the dogs, and my only little girl!, is the fiercest of the lot when it comes to toys. I've never - not in all my years! - ever had a dog who delighted in gutting toys. She started this about 6 months ago. I have beloved stuffed toys from pups who have passed that must be 20 years old. They *cherished* their toys. Not Bella . Most of the toys I've purchased for her are bigger than she is, with long arms and legs. She'll grab them in the middle, squeaking them as hard as she can, then vigorously shakes her head so the appendages beat her up . The harder she shakes, the more they whup on her, the better she likes it .... then she kills them. Yep! She guts 'em. I hope she never gets a mouse or anything, because it appears that's what she's doing with the toy: I throw it down the hall, she hunts them down, shakes them hard to kill them, then guts them. She is a bonafide hunter. All 4 lbs. of her. So maybe that's what they're doing: they're answering some genetic imperative to hunt and kill. That's what they were bred for, no matter that we want them to be pampered little lap dogs. I just wish toys weren't so expensive . |

| Today I spent the better part of the morning sewing up the holes that Bella had dug into all the toys. As soon as I gave her Gorilla to her she proceeded to chew off the ears and then de-fuzz him. I had just finished sewing up the hole where his nose had been. She is a six pound shredding machine. She destroys absolutely every toy she can get her little jaws on. I feel badly for the other two dogs because all their precious toys look George Washington's army, the walking wounded!

| Daisy has always done this. and she is almost 6 yrs. and she trys to eat the stuffing. I have to quickly get it away from her when she rips it open. Now when I buy a toy for Daisy I take the stuffing out first I also buy her toys that already have no stuffing in them she loves them just as well!

| Your Patrick must be related to my Cooper. She destroys all her toys and Maddie's. We are on the second Nylabone now. That is about the only thing she's had that lasted any time at all. I would love to find something that would last for her, or better yet break her from this destructive habit. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | My Jersey is the same way, he destroys all his stuffed toys. His toy box looks empty now.We have 2 that have lasted longer than the others. They are teddy bears in blue and orange Hartz brand from walmart about 5.00 each.

I sew them cause theyre so expensive! the rope toys..she will shred the ends too. she loves this cat toy..its a plastic ring with a lit ball inside..she chews the edges and jumps the ball..this entertains her! |
