We had a little debate going on... Does your dog know his/her name or does he/she go by tone of your voice? Wellll I said that the pooch goes by their name... then I demonstrated it... My boys are Rocky and Nicky... Sooooooo I tried just saying, Ocky or Icky... The looked at me but didn't really respond (and were probably thinking I was sniffing something too lol) Then I went with just the sound of their names and not saying it, still they only looked at me and kept playing... Finally I let out a Rocky and Nicky and they both came to me... They got treats for putting up with there crazy mama lol... What are your takes on it? |
I'm on the fence. I think it depends on the intelligence of the dog. I have heard not to name a dog something that sounds like a command. I know with I can call one name and any of my 3 will look up. It may just be them wanting to know if the others are getting something. Good debate topic. |
Thanks, It was just something that we got to talking about one day, and I just wonderd what the doggie mama's a papa's thought here. I thought it would be cool to get others takes on it. Good point, depending on the dogs intelligence!!! That thought never crossed my mind. lol:thumbup: Quote:

My dogs know their name bc if I am talking about them and say their name they usually come over to me like ya what do you want! lol:D |
my dogs respond to thier name. You say Tucker, he looks up and comes to you. My husband and my kids all have different voices and ways of talking/saying thier names and you say his name he looks at you and he comes. If you say one of the other dogs names, they will look up in interest but wont move untill you say thier names. I too have heard not to name your dog that sounds similar to a command. My brother in law has a dog named Nemo and thier trainer told them that it was to close to NO, thats why they were having so much trouble with training him. |
Mine know their names. When I call ones name that one will look up. |

They definitely know their names...when I call mine the only one that comes running is the one I called. Now, if I say 'come on kids' they all come running. However, Maddie is pretty independant so she comes when she wants to but she always comes when I say 'are you hungry?' or 'do you want supper?'. Yes, the girl is ruled by her tummy :) |
Jackson knows his name, I'm pretty sure. I can say it in any tone and he responds. |
Fancy knows her name and responds everytime I call her name. Our babies are so smart! |
I am happy to add that Armani knows her name too. |
Uni has a bunch of nicknames and she knows each one is her. Uni, Captain, Noonie, Nunez, Crusty face, Big nose, Stinky :D Most often is Noonie or Nunez, and people outside the family will call her by her real name Uni. |
Okay, I just tested this on Winston, I walked into the living room...talked to my husband, then stopped and said "Winston"...in the same voice, he picked up his sleepy head and turned to look right at me, with a questioning look on his face. Yep, he knows his name. Ticked off that I woke him up, but he most definitely responded to his name. |
My 2 know their names and respond to them no matter what tone. I've tried different tones as well as different levels and they respond each time. |
Mine know their names they just choose to ignore me sometimes or they all respond when I call one of their names. |

Thank You all so very much for responding to the debate topic!! Sounds like we all agree that our babies know their names!! I do belive that the Yorkie is one of the smartest breeds out there!! |
That is too cute... Once recently I was calling my sisters cat over to me, calling here kitty kitty and Nicky came over to me, I laughed and said, "your not a kitty, you are a yorkie!!" he just tilted his head at me. Then I laughed and said, "Always afraid your gonna miss something!! " lol:D Quote:

Cool topic! Mine all know their names, and they know if I say their full name, that they were naughty, lol :D They also have nicknames and always respond to those too :) |
My two definately know their names. Furthermore.... when I had a litter of puppies last year, I was calling one of them one day by the wrong name (it's tough to get old! :p) So I'm sitting there calling him by his brothers name and he looks up from his bone like "who me? That's not my name" And he was only 10 or 12 weeks old. I definately think they know their names... |

I saw a skit like that on one of the comedy channels. The guy would take one step and stop (pretending he was the dog) then take another step...and stop... |

Sophie responds to her name and the excitement level in our tone. I've also noticed when DH and I are talking about her and referring to her as "she" Sophie seems to know it something about her:p. |
Mine know their names My cats know their names also |
Maximo knows his name...and he knows all the names of the dogs in our neighborhood! I can say one, and he will run to the window and start barking. Different names elicit different barks. :animal36 |
My Chloe knew her name. She would come running! Now my cat, she is stupid lol she doesn't know her name I don't think. The only sound she knows is the food hitting the bowl. :D |

:yelrotflm I think she probably is just ignoring you, cats are good for doing that! :p |
My babies all know there names, regardless of my tone. Some of them know each others names, and the cats names... "Bentley, where is Monkey...?" "Maddie, sit with Shadow..." I love my smart babies! Still can't Bentley to learn any "amazing" tricks, besides stealing toys from the cat!! lol |
:D Sophie definitely knows her name! She's very familiar with the word treat, toy, and bath too! She comes for all of them except for the last one, then she tries to hide! They are very smart! :D |
