I have a TEACUP Yorkie.
 

I have heard this twice in the past week from 2 different people who I have encountered while out with Pita.

Both of these people have said it like their dog was better than mine!

Pita weighs just under 4 pounds!! Omigod! One of these people was like mines' only 1.8 pounds...la di da... i asked how old it was and he said 4 months!! Like the dog is done growing!

I am not bashing tinies or anything but damn! Pita is tiny as far as I'm concerned and these people act like she's giant!!

It's just aggravating that not only are these people uninformed about their own dogs but they act like they have something that's more valuable than Pita.

just venting i guess.... grrr....

I know I have encountered someone like that also. And my Jewels is only 4 lbs also. Shes small enough to me. On the other hand there are alot of people on here that have small ones that you never hear brag about their dogs size. It will just come up casually in a thread so not everyone who has a little yorkie views it as a status symbol.

Mines both 5 lbs . I have never had that problem. everyone that sees mine always think they look so little.

I have never had anyone say that to me but I think I would just say oh, how nice for you and invite them to our yorkie meetup and YT.

If they said it in a "better than you" way i would feel sorry that they so insecure as to need to brag and that maybe they needed some help from the generous members here at YT. :)

awwwwwwww..........lol...... tell them toby will come and eat their "teacup yorkies"... (toby is 13 lbs) or better yet tell them toby and BROWNIE (lenoras yorkie) is going to come over and they can REALLY see what "oversized yorkies look like :p

I love that about all of u guys, nobody is better than anyone else, we all just love our pups regardless of size! I just go past the comments and ask about the temperament or something. I also hear the "is she a teacup?" question from other people. I don't even bother explaining to people that there is no such thing. I just say she's a tiny bit smaller than average.

Some of you are way nicer than I want to be when i hear these snooty comments!

lol........ not me, i had an old lady believeing that a teaPOT yorkie was the latest and greatest in dog breeding :rolleyes: it wasnt really nice of me, but oh my what a laugh ;)

I get comments too about my girls who are NOT itty bitty and usually I tell the person I am BLESSED because they are so healthy and happy ....I could care less how big or small they are - as long as they are enjoying life then I'm happy.

I always get comments about Sammi's size (She is 13lbs)...My reply is usually (on a NON PMS Day)...As long as she is healthy and eats a full bowl of pasta with us on Sundays I could care less if she was 25 lbs :) LOL!

I love the "WOW, THATS A YORKIE?? I HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE SOOO UHHH BIG BEFORE" Like Sammi is a circus Yorkie Elephant :)

I love 'em big or small! Lexy happens to be tiny, but my beloved Gracie was 6 1/2 lbs. (standard size) and if I could have her back I wouldn't care if she weighed 50 lbs.! People do view it as a status symbol though. Lots of people would tell me they had, or knew of people that had, Yorkies smaller than Gracie. Like I would value her less because she was a whopping 6 1/2 lbs.????? People are nuts. I prefer dogs.

LOL!!! I have from 4 lbs to 12 lbs so I get a wide variety of comments :D

I also have a "teapot" yorkie (12 pounds) and people usually ask me "what kind of dog is that". When I tell them he a yorkie they think he is waaay to big to be a yorkie. He looks like a yorkie, smells like a yorkie, acts like a yorkie.........hmmmmmm must be a yorkie. lol

It's funny how so MANY people have this idea about Yorkies. Where did it come from? I have people constantly ask me if my dogs are "miniature" or "teacups", too.I take every opportunity to educate and say, "Yorkies are a toy breed, the breed standard is 4-7 pounds, and just like people-some are smaller, some are bigger". I wonder if WE have any misnomers about other animals? Dogs, cats, ferrets, whatever....I'm going to watch what I say or ask.LOL I guess " oh, what a cute______(insert animal)!" Is the best response.

Yes see my little girl weighs 3 pounds but I didn't buy her b/c I knew this. Little story here I was too dumb to know anything about the breed when I got her, I knew they were small dogs and I thought they were so cute! Well the "breeder" (I'm still not sure how I feel about this person, but didn't realize at the time) didn't inform me on anything about Yorkies or how Porscha would be very small all she wanted was her money and told me to keep her warm since it had just started snowing, locked in a cage and alone from her siblings she was the runt and I felt bad for her I wanted to save her!!! OK on to the topic I think all Yorkies are small no matter if they weigh 20 pounds or 1! I grew up with a terrier who weighed about 25 pounds maybe a little less and I always considered him a small dog, then we got the lab and I believed that even more! Now when all three are together I just laugh they are so cute, the lab being Rusty 70 pounds, Sam 25 and Porscha 3! So to anyone who thinks a 15 pounds Yorkie is big, let my lab run into you at a hundred miles an hour in my back yard and see if you think a Yorkie is big then heheheh!!!!

Andrea - good point about the Lab. Stewie is on the larger end of the Yorkie spectrum at 7.5lbs, but he is sooooo teeny compared to the 90lb bag of muscles my Lab was!!

When I was watching another Yorkie who was 2.3lbs @ 7 mos, I took her and Stewie to Petco and you would have thought that Stewie did not exist. Everyone was fussing over her saying "OMG IS SHE A TEACUP?" and I would say "no, she's a Yorkie who is below standard weight. There's no such thing as teacup animals". UGH! Makes my skin crawl.

It was a good opportunity to educate people... I take every opportunity I can to let people know about pet store puppies, puppy mills and the "creative" words some breeders use to get more money from you... ie: teeny tiny, teacup, rare (as in coloring) ect. I let them know the danger "breeders" put their tiny females in to get those "teacups, teeny tinys ect" and also let them know that there are good breeders who use standard size and get a small pup.

Most of the time people say "thanks I didn't know that", and do you know any "reputable breeders"?

I get the 'he's so small!' comment with Bender a lot. He's full grown and just a smidge over 4#. No one ever believes he's 2 because his fur is still puppy color. I get asked if he's a teacup and I try to tell them there's no such thing, but people always think you're just uninformed...it's pretty sad. Anyhow, I personally wouldn't want a really small Yorkie. Bender is small enough for me, and now that we're looking for him a playmate we're looking for one his size or a little bigger, since we don't think it's healthy for them to be any smaller. Bender is the right size that I don't have to worry about him hurting himself when he plays WonderDog off the bed, and that's how I like it. :animal36

Not that he had a haircut..the guy truly believed he had a short-haired yorkie!! LOL It's only 4 months old and it's going to stay 1.8 pounds and have short hair!! WOW talk about not knowin what you're gettin into! In his defence, it's his wife's dog, he probly doesn't pay much attention to the details. I really don't think he should talk like he knows so much when he doesn't. MEN! HA! (Sorry guys)

My aunt recently bought a dog from a petstore in Brooklyn that advertises that the sell teacup yorkies. She asked me to come along because since I have a Yorkie she said I could give her some tips on which one to pick, well I dont know why she even bought me with her because she didn't listen to a word I said! She saw the puppies and that was it! This place was horrible they had like 5 puppies in one cage and something was just not right with those dogs They were all FAT I mean fat like they were feeding them something they shouldn't have been. One woman was in there to get another "tea cup" she said she bought a teacup from this place a year ago and her dog is now 11 pounds!!!! I told my aunt to run outta that place after this lady said that after all my warnings to my aunt not to purchase anything from there of course she didn't listen to me and bought her dog. This dog is now 4 months old and is 4 pounds and is getting fatter and bigger by the day. I told her yesterday that she doesn't have a teacup she has a tea kettle. LOL.......People just want yorkies just to want them they just don't want to listen to anything anyone else says.

Oh, do I get frustrated with this as well!$@%?#& Zoe's weighs 3.5 lbs and done with growing... And to some people, she's "long" for a Yorkie, W-H-A-T???? I've done much research on this and there is NO such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie. Some breeder do breed them small and these puppies are cute but a lot more prone to accidents and to getting sick... I had a Yorkie in the past that was supposedly a teacup and he grew to be 11 lbs :-) I loved him to death!!! The funny thing is, Zoe's weight at 4 months was exaclty 1.6 lb and she wasn't done growing!!! Your Pita is adorable and "tiny" in my book and she's HEALTHY! Isn't that what counts?

A lot of people don't do research on the breed at all. I do have a preference and I like the small ones 2 3/4 - 3 lbs . However I take care of them like if they were real babies.There is much more work involved when you have a really tiny dog.Also everything you get for them or vet bills are much higher for the tinies.It bothers me sometimes when people tell me "He's a teacup right?" I let them know that "teacup" is just a newborn pup that you stick in a teacup and take a picture. If I were to put Cookie or Mimi in something it would be a soup bowl lol. I tell them these are toy sized and a few are much tinier than the toy sized. So they are "tiny" No matter what, 99% of breeders will sell their little runt for double the price of the others in that litter. I have NEVER seen the runt of the litter sell for $800 as if runt was much more special than the others. Mine weigh 3 lbs and 3.2 lbs

HI... I breed yorkies and have for over 19 yrs now and poodles before that.. I hear more bad about the tinny's being bred than good.. You can have healthy but the way some of the people are breeding to get the tinnys fathers to daughter leads to real health issues..I don't profess to know it all or anything at times but do know you can get very tinny ones in a litter of normal 5-8# dogs. and you know an 8 pound yorky could be starved down to meet breed standards.. I weigh my dogs when they are a year old and if they get fatter that's fine with me.. I breed for health and conformations with tons of hair and wonderful faces.. My dogs are black SILK coats but my dogs weigh in at 2.5 to 8.5#. This is not a large dogs..I know a lady right now that bought a so called tea cup for over 2000.000 and after 6 months has almost put that same amount into it in vet bills..!! I hear this over and over.. NO thank you.. You get tinny dogs in almost every litter.. There are some excellent breeders that have bred their dog down to the tinny's but they are still having many c-sections as if you don't watch diet when pregnant the pups can become too large for delievery..

We just had 3 litters born the most I've had in 5 yrs.. I was on pins and needles.. Thank God they all were born fine and healthy... WHEW.. ! It's wonderful when it all goes well but when it dosen't you blame youself over and over... I've had people email me wanting to buy a 2# male for breeding to a 2# female.. Well, I'm not very nice when it comes to stuff like that.. Person even told me that her vet said the dog was big enough to have pups??? I asked who was going to benifit at her dogs distress of not being able to deliever her pups and who would make the money on such a breeding??? I told her if you want to breed buy something breeding size breed standard and then they can still have problems.. as it's a genetic thing as well as diet as to natural birth and c-section.. I told her the vet she took her dog to should be ashamed of himself.. I told her she didn't think much of her do to put her though that.. and her vet would be the only one to make money on that type of a breeding.. May loose the dog and all her pups.. especially if she dosen't even know what to look for with problems..

I can't believe it! You sound just like me! My daughter said I needed a Yorkie after my Peke died. I never knew much about them either---they were dogs, weren't they? Well the same thing happened as what happened to you. She was alone in a cage. very dirty and stinky. She was the runt of the litter, and my heart said, get her out of there! She also weighs 3#, and is a wonderful pet. However, she has bad knees, and am hoping I can keep her from surgery. The vet showed me what they had to do, and it freaked me out and I took her home. She doesn't cry or anything, but once in a long while, it will lock and she walks on three legs for a minute.
Like you, it wouldn't matter what she weighed. Although I must admit I wanted a small dog just for convenience sake. My Peke weighed 14 #, and that was a small dog in my opinion. I have bad arthritis, and just didn't want a really big dog.

My Zoe is 7lbs....and her puppies are 3 weeks old..one of them has a cleft pallatte and we will be keeping her but she is so small (but much tougher and wilder than her brother and sister) I'm worried that everyone is going to ooohhh and aaahhhhh over the baby cause she is soooo small and think Zoe is a monster size wise....when she is just fine and the baby is the one with the weight problem....and I don't want people thinking we have her just because she is sooo small..trust me I would rather have a 15lb Yorkie over a 3lb special needs Yorkie
