Why is this teacup thing so HORRIBLE and taboo. I understand teacup is not a breed but I do understand what people mean when they say it. This is why I don't know what the horrors of someplace advertising that they have them is. To me its just another word to describe a very small dog. When pet stores advertise they have teacups I just think they have some small dogs and some regular sized ones. I don't automatically damn the store to hell. LOL......Can someone please explain to me what is bad about this label? Cuz in my eyes there IS a such thing as a teacup yorkie its just another word for a very small tiny yorkie. I don't see the difference in advertising a teacup and something like a toy poodle. Its just a name.

I believe what is so bad about this is that some "breeders/brokers" without knowledge of the consiquences, will breed these small dogs under 3 lbs to try to get an entire litter of tinies. This could kill the mother.
Alot of sellers just put the label "teacup" on them to jack up the pricetags. They try to make it seem like they are a seperate type. Also, many people just use these pups as status dogs or assesories. The petshops try to sell dogs as a spur of the moment purchase.
The tinies are just the runts of the litter. Many people say that they get health problems easily and you have to be extra careful with them. They have to be watched carefuly around children because of their little fragile bones. I've heard of them jumping up in the air or jumping off of a couch/bed and getting hurt.
So I guess these are the things you don't hear about the cute teeny "teacups" that paris and brittney sport around.

Anyone who boasts about theirs being better because of size is crazy, dillusional, and searching for attention. I have a very small yorkie, 3lbs full grown. I love her and wouldn't change her for anything, but I actually wanted more of a 5lb when I was looking. I looked forever, and then saw my baby girl - and she just loved me and I loved her the minute we met. I do not love Laila for her size, but for her spunk and friendliness. People ohhh and ahh over her tiny size and I want to tell them she could be 50lbs and I'd love her the same. Our dogs are cute and perfect because they're are dogs! I didn't buy her to show her off, I bought her to have a wonderful companion - and she just likes to show herself :animal36 off! Haha. But a Yorkie is a Yorkie - and anyone fortunate enough to own one will know that size doesn't matter. Yorkies are a beautiful, fun and intelligent breed we have all grown to love and adore - despite size! Yorkies Rock!

P.S. - Does my icon show up? I can't tell - it's her rock star pic in the grass!

I have said this exact thing to myself over and over what you said " If someone has a Yorkie - don't they just love all Yorkie's? Yes, I love all Yorkies and get so excited when I see them on the street, on people's laps in the car driving, (so unsafe by the way), anywhere I go, I just love them all.

It's such a breed not to be judged by it's size/shape, but yet adore them because they are all so different from one another. This is what truly makes them so darn special.

And so far nope, don't see your icon/avator showing up.

I have over the years watch the term teacup be in vogue then out again. I truly laugh (not nice) when someone is holding a large Yorkie and tell me they paid extra for it because it was teacup. Obviously, 8-10 pounds is a wonderful size to we who love them, but that is not my point. Since there is no standard for "teacup" anyone can sell any size to the buyer with the money in their pocket as teacup. I have to honestly say, I don't feel a bit sorry for them. If they had gone even to one site to research and see the whole picture about the sizes, healths, etc, they would have made a more informed choice.
I saw a puppy at 6 weeks and the breeder offered him to me as a stud because he was only gonna be 3-3 1/2 pounds. BTW, he was already over 2 pounds. I asked her to see the standard she uses to judge the teacups by and she very angrilly said, she didn't need a standard to tell her anything about the size of her dogs. She could sell them for anything she wanted. Unfortunately, that is true..

I read this whole thread and I feel like sometimes people forget that they got a Yorkie, as opposed to any other breed, for its personnality, charm, and intelligence. Isnt that why we love them so much? Its not because of their size!! Its sad that it matters so much to alot of people. I have a yorkipoo, of course, he is more yorkie than poo... but he is now almost 7 pounds at 4 months. I know he's going to be really big and strong! (He already is!!) I guess what i'm trying to say is: we should appreciate the fact that our dogs are healthy. There are other mommies out there who have sick puppies... I am thankful that mine is a fun and healthy best friend. I also agree that the Teacup term is so cliche. Its all about having beautiful, healthy Yorkies, with shiny hair, and bright eyes...isnt it?!!

Great post gneron. I totally agree. Though I would add to the bright eyes and say "expressive", too :D :p

Very nicely said! Oh and welcome to YT!

My three are all so different, in size, color and personality and I love them all so much. Don't know what life would be like without them.

Anyway... here's a picture of her -- she's 13 weeks and weighs 10 ounces. The vet has checked her and says she is healthy, other than an extremely large open fontanel.

shes cute. i love it when there heads are bigger than there body. she brings a funny story to mind..... when my son first started playing football they called him jack (short for jack in the box). it was sooo cute here was this little 8 year kid with this huge helmet on. when he would run to fast and tilt his head to the side he would almost fall over...now at 16 playing varsity he's grown into it but he's still the smallest boy on the team...hehe

Thanks for the welcome! I will post my pics soon... I have a 7 pound yorkipoo that is only 4 months old, more yorkie than poo of course! He has everything a yorkie has, he's just the size of a poodle! I love it!

Hello Thread This is my first time visiting and joining this site so I hope I am doing it right. My wife and I have a 4 1/2 lb. female ( Gracey) and she is presently in the family way, bred to a 7 lb Yorkie. How many days does it take from the time of mating? I really enjoyed reading your comments and would appreciate any good sound advice on caring for her. Thanks, it will be a great help to us. Will keep you posted. Joe (Bevmac777)

I weigh my dogs when they are a year old and if they get fatter that's fine with me.. I breed for health and conformations with tons of hair and wonderful faces.. My dogs are black SILK coats but my dogs weigh in at 2.5 to 8.5#. This is not a large dogs..I know a lady right now that bought a so called tea cup for over 2000.000 and after 6 months has almost put that same amount into it in vet bills..!! I hear this over and over.. NO thank you.. You get tinny dogs in almost every litter.. There are some excellent breeders that have bred their dog down to the tinny's but they are still having many c-sections as if you don't watch diet when pregnant the pups can become too large for delievery..

We just had 3 litters born the most I've had in 5 yrs.. I was on pins and needles.. Thank God they all were born fine and healthy... WHEW.. ! It's wonderful when it all goes well but when it dosen't you blame youself over and over... I've had people email me wanting to buy a 2# male for breeding to a 2# female.. Well, I'm not very nice when it comes to stuff like that.. Person even told me that her vet said the dog was big enough to have pups??? I asked who was going to benifit at her dogs distress of not being able to deliever her pups and who would make the money on such a breeding??? I told her if you want to breed buy something breeding size breed standard and then they can still have problems.. as it's a genetic thing as well as diet as to natural birth and c-section.. I told her the vet she took her dog to should be ashamed of himself.. I told her she didn't think much of her do to put her though that.. and her vet would be the only one to make money on that type of a breeding.. May loose the dog and all her pups.. especially if she dosen't even know what to look for with problems..

Well, I spouted enough..

Well I am not a breeder but I know she is too small to be breed especially to a dog that is larger than her. She might need a Csection because the pups will be too large for her to deliver. I would put your question in the breeders section so they can help you. We have alot of knowledgeable breeders on this board.

I will keep my cool on this one and not say anything that will get me in trouble. I would contact your vet and schedule a sono/x-ray to determine if she will be able to free whelp. :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown

whispersmom2 10-17-2005 11:26 AM

Bevmac, i read your post and my mouth just dropped open. Your little girl could be in a great deal of danger. Being bred to a LARGER male can result in babies too large to be delivered(that also happens when a small is bred to a small) which can result in a c-section or worse. And, she is in danger of having eclampsia if the puppies are large enough to cause a drain on her calcium when she is trying to provide enough milk for the puppies.
As for the gestation period..it can happen anytime from 55 days from first mating to 64 days from last mating. So, there is nearly a 2-week window to wait and watch her. She will have to be attended, preferably by a more experienced mentor, during that entire time. Your vet can do x-rays ( after 7-8 weeks)to see size of puppies compared to mom's pelvis and how many. I would suspect that the vet would schedule a c-section IF there are more babies or larger ones.
I would be gravely concerned about the small mom for the first 4 weeks of the time she is nursing. They can die in a few minutes from eclampsia and for that reason, must be monitored constantly.
I do not intend to scare the bejeebees out of you but, I would be scared if it were my dog. I hope that you decide that this will be the only time such a small girl will be bred to a stud of ANY size... Good Luck

As far as Bevmac 777, I think someone has posted this as a joke. Look at the profile page...it looks suspicious to me.

DON'T SAY ANYTHING THAT WILL GET ANY OF YOU IN TROUBLE! Looks like a bait post.
