Your best line to keep peoples hands off your dog! Okay everyone, give me your best line to use in the moment as the hand is approaching your pooch.... I've used "my dog has a parasite humans can get" a lot, I need something new! |
haha If there's someone that I don't want touching my dog I always say 'Oh she bites, or he bites' and that always makes them back up. :p |

LOL,Yeah, that should do the trick!;) |
Try "he/she has lice" or "can't control her bladder when touched" :) |

I just tell em Laynee has DEADLY GAS and she does. I'm telling you she can stop a whole room dead in its tracks with her bottom. Lol. And it's like as soon as you touch her bottom. I think it's funny but i know its from her food. I gave her a bath today and as i scrubbed her bottom she farted on me!!! |
I simply say "no touching please, she is in training", then walk away. |
The only people I ever had any trouble with wanting to mess with Galahad were the twin boys who lived down the building from us in the apartment. Every single time they'd see him, regardless of what he was doing (usually sniffing around for the perfect place to drop a stinkle), they'd both come running at him, screaming his name and slapping their thighs. Mind you, these kids are eleven, and they have a min-pin, there was no reason for them to be so crazy about seeing my little guy. I would do one of two things when I saw them coming: A. Gently twitch his leash back toward me, and pick him up before they could get to him and start grabbing him. Then I'd tell them that they could pet him if they'd lower their voices and not grab him. B. Twitch his leash toward the apartment and haul butt like mad to get inside before they could get to us! We've moved out of the apartments though, thankfully, and none of my new neighbors so far have tried to grab or touch Galahad. The lady next door commented that he was gorgeous, and the delivery guy for my stove whistled and called him a "helluva high priced dog", lol. |
I usually just say "don't touch my dog." :p Seriously though I hate when people just try to hold or touch her without even asking, I understand it , but hate it none the less. I usually try to say something like..."she is little and scares easy so please don't" , but if I'm in a bit of a b*tchy mood I just say "Dont touch her"...yeah ,they love me then  You could always try ..... don't let her lick your hand she eats her own poo :p |
I say they have worms |

If someone asks me, I usually say ok. But it's when people don't ask, esp little kids like 5 and under who don't know how to properly pick up a dog. There was one the other day. A young mom came in with a boy maybe 4 and a girl maybe 2. The boy picked up Uni by her front paws! Uni likes to stand on her back legs and say hi to people and this kid picked her up like that! The mom was totally not paying attention, so I tried real hard and kindly said "oh honey please don't pick her up like that, she doesn't like to be picked up" He put her down and Uni immediately went and hid in her bed. |

I'm surprised at how many parents let young children run up to strange dogs to pet them. I would never assume a dog is friendly, healthy, etc... I get so nervous when kids rush towards our three. The two little ones get scared to death and I'm always afraid they will bite out of fear! So that's what I usually say, "they might bite"! Poor Crosley though, LOVES kids and wants the attention! :) |

These are some great answers! I love YorkieTalk! I find that many times people will approach saying, "Does he/she bite," as they reach out to pet. Maybe it is not good to tell hem they bite because we want to have our pups accepted in stores, etc. So I will usually respond with, "Well, I wouldn't put MY hand up there"!! (with a little twinkle in your eye) They stop and look puzzled not knowing if you are really serious! Say something to catch them off guard. "Do you need to wash your hands first"??? Or you could hand them a baby wipe and tell them, "That's the rules." Little children want to come up and grab your pup. I tell them her name and that they can't pet her, but they can wave and say hello. (This works great for real little kids) |

I have said , ohh honey Im sorry she doesnt like kids!! Which honestly isnt to far from the truth!! She has not been exposed to little little kids to often and thier quick movements scare the heck out of her expecially when then are reaching quickly at her and , she did bite one!! well a little nip, just enough to let the kid now DONT reach at my face!! |
I have never felt the need to tell people to keep their hands off my dog. |

What I have found is that using this technique takes away the unruly excitement about seeing the dogs and replaces it with an respectful excitement. When there is a situation where I absolutely DON'T want my dogs touched, I simply pick them up and move away. |
I typically don't mind if someone just wants to pet Toby. If it's a child that appears well behaved I will tell them to be gentle because he's little and they could hurt him.If it's a child that is obviously a brat I just tell them no. Years ago my wife and I lived next door to a lady that had a sweet little girl named Sara with downs syndrome that loved to pet our mixed terrier Buddy.I think at first Buddy could sense something was wrong with her and was a little tense but was still a little gentleman.Over time however he grew to love Sara and I think he really missed her after we moved.Man I miss that little fella. |

I REALLY like this answer.:thumbup: I don't mind people petting my babies. But Bentley gets nervous when little kids rush up to him and I am afraid he might nip. He is used to kids since I have 2 small children, but for some reason other small children make him nervous at first. I guess if something that much bigger than me ran up on me like that I would bite too though! :p |
Reesie's buddy is Cindy, a Border Collie, and she's very protective and very gentle with Reesie. If someone gets too close to Reesie she's right there with teeth. I just say, 'You're gonna lose that hand in a second...' |
I'm one of those people who loves to pet peoples dogs, lol! If I'm out and I see someone with a little dog that I think is cute, I will have to stop and pet them! Just yesterday I was in WalMart and a lady had a long haired Chihuahua puppy, of course I had to go up to her and give the little guy a rub under it's chin, soooo cute! :p I didn't think dogs were allowed in the mall, the lady with the Chi said it was fine as long as you kept them in your arms..I will be taking Bailey to the mall soon, and I'm sure there will be lots of people wanting to pet him, if they are gentle I'm usually fine with it :) |
