Collars vs Harness for Yorkies I use harnesses for my yorkies 4 pounds each. But find that clothes are designed to be used with a collar and leash. Do any of you have small yorkies 4 to 5 pounds and have been able to use a collar that does not push against their trachea (spelling??) If so where can I find such a collar? |
I only use harnesses, collars are too risky with trachea problems. I know a lot of people on here dress their babies and some of the clothes have rings on them or slits to put the clip through. |
I only use Puppia Harnesses and Lupine Roman Harnesses. I like the Lupine the set. Does not pull on the throat. :thumbup::thumbup: The lupine fits over Max's sweaters for winter. Many colors available. |
I wouldn't use a collar. We use lightweight silk harnesses made by "chattiesmom" and they fit nicely over the clothing and have a lot of adjustment in them so they can go over lightweight clothing or heavier sweaters/coats. We have Derby in a collar, but use the harness when we're on walks. We want the collar for ID purposes and it has his rabies tag on it as well. We don't use the collar to put his leash on at all. |
Athena has a collar for ID tags, but she has a harness for the leash and we never attach the leash to the collar. I just cannot leave the harness on 247 with ID tags because it causes too much matting. |
Callie always has a collar on for her tags but I never ever hook the leash on it! When the leash has to be used we always use the harness durning the colder times when she will be wearing clothes we just lossen the harness so it fits over her clothes and most of her jackets have a harness ring on them. |
I only use harness too, I make a hole on their clothes, because they use their harness inside, and I also have the body belt harness is easy to use over clothes;) |
I use collars for I.D. purposes only. Harnesses are for walking them. We never attach the leash to their collars. We usually adjust the harness to fit over their clothes. But most of their clothes have d-rings. |
I use a collar on Luna 24/7 for her ID tags and such. When she goes out thats when I put her harness on. Theres too many risks that can happen with their small necks. There IS a whole bunch of dog clothes with little slits in them to hook the leash to the harness but if you cant find one of those you can always just slip the leash under the outfit to hook onto the harness |
I use the Buddy Belt on Sydney. Because her sweaters for outside don't always fit quite right, I put her belt on the outside. |
Jackson wears a collar 24/7 for ID purposes but always walks on a harness. We like our Puppia harness over here. Even Jackson, at 12.5lbs, has a very sensitive neck so I can't imagine using a collar on a 4lber. |
Hi everyone. My baby is 4 yrs. old and 7 lbs. and I've had him since he was 6 mo. old. Now after reading this I feel like a terrible mommy 'cause I have always leashed his collar when we go out. I haven't noticed any problems yet. Have I set my baby up for future problems? |

We use a harness dress for now and I usually put a harness over her sweater in the winter, other then that I don't dress her up outside. |

I'm using some really great rolled collars by Auburn Leathercrafters to hold their id tags, but only use harnesses for walking. |
You have to think of it this way. A dog has hearing that is 10 times better than ours. Sure, they get used to having a bell or two tags (I'm not suggesting taking the id tag off, just don't have two on), but how would you like to have a large bell hanging around your neck all the time? This is what is good and fair for the dog and we have to be good stewards with our animals and think what their sensitive hearing will have to tolerate. I'm not trying to be mean, but I know I wouldn't like having a bell around my neck 24/7. I'm sure Cesar would say the same thing, you have to do what is good for your little furface. |

Rio wears a collar for her ID tags (taken off when she's at home) and a Buddy Belt harness for walks. Buddy Belt's are so easy to put on and take off - just one buckle, and they are made of soft leather. They're a little pricey (around $40 and up depending on size) but they are the only harness that fits Rio (she's only 2.7 lbs). |

I see a lot of people here talking about dog tags annoying dogs that are clanging together. Just going to put this side comment that people have been using dog tags on their dogs for years and years and years. It is possible that dogs might get irritated at this but for me personally it's safety first. I only have her ID tag on and before I bought my new one, it used to clang against the metal on her collar but only lightly and when she's really moving fast. I'd like to suggest to some that if you go on eBay and look up user pettags4less they have a ID tag for under $3 (including shipping!) that is rectangular shape and it has a slit on either edge, you put the collar through the slits (similar to a belt buckle) that way the tag is not hanging off the collar or swinging and hitting against any of the clasp or the little ring that holds extra collar strap. It's very light and it works really great and they are fully customizable. I just got mine a few days ago and love it! Using this with other tags would eliminate 'extra' clanging. And btw, I use a collar for ID tag and a harness for the leash. |
I use Buddy Belts for my dog and love them. He wears a harness in the car too for his dog car seat. I have recently bought him some fashion collars and am going to try to get him to wear them but he HATES collars, harnesses and clothes on. :) I don't want him to wear anything on his neck or body when I am not around him. I am very worried he would get caught on something and get hurt or worse! |
I use a collar and leash on my boys, and have never had any issues with it. My older is 5 lbs and my younger is 4 lbs. My boys NEVER pull on their leashes - they know that their place is right next to my feet. If they did pull I would use harnesses, but I just don't feel the need if they are so well behaved. Even when they see another dog, they don't pull. They perk up their ears and turn their bodies a little, but they don't try to pull and go say hi. I am proud to say my boys are extremely well behaved on leash. I can see where people would worry though, I just don't feel the need to use a harness now that they are trained on leashes. I actually got a collar for my oldest when I didn't know much about Yorkies, I probably would have started with a harness if I had known much about the breed. |
