Tearing my hair out over Bailey's hair!!

Okay..slight exaggeration:D I'm am at a loss though! Bailey is 7 months old in 2 days and his coat is a mess:rolleyes: ( I had just brushed him in the attached pic and he decided to have a good roll on the floor right after his brushing! ) Soooo, should I shave him? He has an extemely slow growing coat, he is only now getting muzzle hair growth:eek: He always looks dirty and stringy, I'm tempted to give him a bath 2x a week instead of once, just so he will look cleaner. Is there anything I can give him to help the coat? I feed him Wellness puppy. His hair doesn't matt, only a few matts where the old puppy coat ends. I really would love some suggestions.

MI Yorkielover 10-22-2009 07:11 AM

Oh Darlene:) Your tag line says it all...Bailey is beautiful. I see nothing wrong with Bailey's coat. Sophie is a roller and gets messy quickly, too lol. I do know Eukannuba has a breed specific food that 's made specifically for a yorkshire terrier's coat but I think Bailey is absolutely adorable as is.

Bailey is adorable!! He is a baby and his coat is just coming in....it takes quite awhile to see what they will really end up looking like. My girl gets a bath every weekend, but she gets a greasy head & ears after a few days, I've been told is in the breed. Seriously, he is sooo precious!:)

Darlene68 10-22-2009 07:15 AM

Thanks both of you, Don't get me wrong, I love my Bailey more then anything!:D He just looks like a little ragamuffin most of the time!!:)..I have to restain myself from getting out the scissors!:eek:

Perrella 10-22-2009 07:21 AM

Haha, don't I know it. Take a look at Zhoie, she is alway so messy looking. I just figured out how to post her pic this morning. hehe. She is 9 mos, her coat doesn't mat but doesn't grow quickly either.

Zhoie looks like she has a lovely thick coat! :)

Oh I think Bailey is adorable, I think that you should let it grow, I bet that slow growing coat will be stunning when it does finally get long. :) My Maddie gets stringy looking too until her hair gets longer, I cut it for summer (the cut was cute and I liked it) i just really wish that I had left it alone.

itzzbarb 10-22-2009 07:29 AM

Bailey's coat looks exactly like a puppy's coat looks. Jillie will be 6 months on 11/1 and her coat looks like Bailey's does, especially the top of the head. It always looks a mess. Just be patient, you have a growing puppy on your hands. Take a look at a human toddler, is their hair perfect like an adult's would look? No, it isn't. So, keep those scissors in the drawer, and please don't shave him.

BonBon 10-22-2009 07:33 AM

Darlene, little Bailey looks adorable! I swear, he just keeps getting cuter & cuter (which is pretty hard to do when you're as cute as he was to begin with). I really hope you don't cut his hair. It sounds like his coat is similar to Tate's - grows pretty slow & hardly mats. Tate's hair usually stays clean looking between baths (every 2-3 weeks). What do you bathe him with?

Darlene68 10-22-2009 07:42 AM

Thanks Everyone, I will put the scissors away! I know patience is a virtue, I need more of it :)

Thanks so much :) I guess I won't cut it then, Bailey is my first pup with a coat that grows, I'm definately not use to it!. I use Royal Treatment products to bath Bailey. Is it a good idea to give supplements for their coat?

I think just a puppy trim up would help a ton! Jackson's hair was sooo annoying as a puppy. I could brush it 4x a day and it would still end up looking stringy and tangled. When he got his first puppy cut at 4 1/2 months old, it helped a ton. His second hair cut was a lot better though, they didn't shave him but they cut him a lot shorter. I think Bailey probably just needs a good trim!

TOY 10-22-2009 07:52 AM

Darlene, I have absolutely no idea if this is true or myth as in an old wives' tale but I think I read it somewhere. Maybe someone else will chime in about it...

I've heard that giving a dog an egg every once in awhile helps the coat.

I have absolutely nothing to base that on except I've either read it or been told that. Anyway, luckily our picky eater will eat an egg once in awhile.

Your Bailey is a cutie.

Hmmm, Maybe I will just trim the ends to get rid of the fuzzy hair from the puppy coat:)

chachi 10-22-2009 07:59 AM

He could use a little trim maybe. It depends on what kind of look you like. I think yorkies look good with long coats if they have just been brushed or groomed. Other times I think they look like ragamuffins. I grew my Jewels hair out but I just couldnt take the scraggly looking hair so I got her cut short and like her hair alot better. I just like them to always have a freshly groomed look

I've given Bailey egg whites and he loves them!!! I remember as a teenager putting eggs in my hair and on my face, so funny now when I think back, the egg would tighten on my face so much it felt like my face would crack:p

Bailey is precious! My Abby is 7 months old and her hair looks a lot like Bailey's on the rump, it is kind of wavy and unmanageable. However, the hair on the front of her body, at the shoulders, has now gotten beautiful and it is long enough that it parts on the spine and falls evenly on both sides and it is straight. I'm hoping the back hair will do likewise but it may not. Bailey looks tiny, how much does he weigh?

I love length on a coat, but I don't like the straggly look, I can brush Bailey several times a day and he still looks unkempt. I'm hoping it will improve:)

Bailey is absolutely ADORABLE!!!! :) I looked at his photo album and video. You have to be in love!

I'm not familiar with those bath products. But, I do give all mine fish oil on their food a few times a week. Plus, I feed raw for breakfast. So those things may be helping Tate's coat. I always thought of supplements as being more for a dry, brittle coat or dry skin. But really, they're supposed to support a healthy shiny coat. So yes, that's something you might want to try giving him. I just ordered a new kind from AMD that was recommended to me by several people here on YT. It's Ark Natural's Royal Coat Express, I think it's called. Here's her website www.westbrookdog.com.

Tate is just over 10 1/2 months old now, & I think his hair just keeps getting better looking. Not great, but it does keep getting better. Bailey just probably needs to outgrow his puppy coat & then I bet he'll be gorgeous. :D

I think it's those awkward teen years for our puppies at that age... lol ;)

The products were sent to me by another YT'er and smell amazing, what do you use on Tate when bathing? ( I looked for a pic of him but couldn't find any :( ) I will have to look into the fish oil, I believe I read that somewhere before too!

I have Fiona on Eukanuba Yorkie dry food---she has been on it since she was a puppy , then back when she turned a year old---i get lots of compliments on how shiny and beautiful her coat is----puppies like to play and with that, they get matted and dirty! give it some time, that puppy hair will soon grow out and be more manageable....i ended up shaving fiona down this summer, and it was the best thing i could have ever done for her! good luck! :)

I agree  Some dogs can pull it off but others just look scraggly, Jackson's hair gets like that so I prefer to keep it shorter.

RoxyLuv 10-22-2009 08:47 AM

Bailey's coat is like Roxy's. (1 yr Nov 1) I want her to look freshly brushed all the time, but she's definitely not prissy enough to have that ever happen. Her hair grows painfully slow. She's grown in a lot of silver. I've thought of having the black ends trimmed off, but then she won't look like my Roxy! She won't be my baby anymore... be all grown up! Guess I'm not ready to let go of that yet. Oh what to do?!?! I really don't mind the scruffy look, but it would be nice to see her very nicely brushed for longer than 5 seconds.

At least this way we get to save a lot of money on grooming when it grows so slow, although I think I'll be doing any cutting that needs to be done. I've only taken her to groomer once this whole year. Been doing it all myself. Her face was trimmed just a little that one time at the groomer. Later I wished I hadn't ask her to do that. Didn't realize then she was going to be a slow grower.

Bailey is adorable! Here are my two Raggmuffins only a few hours after a bath & brushing. I love the way they look at this age. Mine are 21 & 23 weeks.:p

Shaving her down was the best thing you could have done because... why? What's different?

This is exactly the point I am at with Daisy right now. Her coat is right on the brink of cottony-silky; if she winds up cottony, I will need to keep her in a puppy cut always. For now, she seems to be slowly losing the fluffy puppy stuff....I find myself just wanting to cut it off to see what is down under there already! Then I can let it grow out? Decisions, decisions. :)
