| New Strain Parvo Outbreak I just saw on the television news that there is a new strain parvo outbreak in Kent County (mid state). This is just a reminder that even though it's turning colder here it's best to be sure to keep up with your little ones heartworm medicine! Here is the article. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - A pet store franchise in West Michigan has banned dogs from its stores. Pet Supplies Plus, which has six locations in West Michigan, are asking dog owners to leave their pets a home. A store spokesperson released a statement Saturday saying, "With the recent Parvo outbreak, we are doing this out of concern for our customers' pets and our own." The Humane Society of Kent County is warning pet owners of a highly virulent or new strain of Parvo. Officials at the Humane Society say at least three adult dogs in Kent County may have died from the Parvo. The Humane Society took precautions today by "deeply" cleaning their shelter, performing diagnostic tests and will be vaccinating all dogs and puppies when they are brought in to the shelter. The shelter was closed today for the cleaning. It reopens Saturday morning at 11:00am for adoptions only. Animal admitting will reopen on Monday by appointment only. Humane Society officials say that pet owners should contact their veterinarians to see if their dog's previous vaccinations provide protection against this current outbreak. If you suspect your dog has Parvo, you should keep your dog confined away from other dogs and contact your veterinarian. Symptoms for Parvo include lethargy, bloody vomit and diarrhea. | By the way, Lilly's Puppy Pad is the pet store who sold an infected 10 week old puppy that had the virus. The vet who saw the puppy said anyone who even walked into the store could carry the virus home on their shoes. Michigan no longer regulates pet stores so be sure if you are considering a new puppy to purchase from a reputable breeder! Jackie & my Sophie |

| Thanks for posting. Parvo is nothing to play around with, as you said, it can travel with you to your house and floors, unbeknownst to you. Beyond scary! |
