We're thinking of taking a road trip and my husband isn't as crazy about taking the boys as I am...soooo...I've been thinking about boarding them while we're gone. What should I look for? What questions should I ask? What is a 'normal' fee for 2 dogs? I've only used a boarding facility one time about 15 years ago and it was great but now it seems like everyone wants to stick them in a cage and only walk them once or twice a day and I just don't think that's good enough. Any suggestions or advice?

I paid a do sitter when I went away and she stayed with Maximus in her home with her yorkie, and they went on walk and played and he even slept in their bed with their other yorkie..I paid her 40.00 a day and it was worth every penny!! My vet wanted 37.00 a day and they were put in a kennel and only walked a coupole of times a day..I would definitely look for a petsitter!!

I just boarded for the first time ever. It was $12/day. He could go inside/outside from morning till night then was closed in. He got 1 hour quality time per day....doing whatever the dog wanted. I would look for cleanliness for sure. You could opt to pay for extras. Mine was content to be able go in and out all day. Pop in when they are not expecing you and take a look around. If you do board, you can take your dog's favorite bed/blanket, toys, food and treats. I wish you much luck, it sure too a lot of pressure off of me and was worth the money (of course I only paid for 2 days though).

Too bad you don't have someone who can sit for you. I would go to the boarding facility near your home and check them out. We have some new ones here that are very different from just putting them in crates all day. They even have a TV room. There are many who just walk them and put them in a crate all day. So Sad!

Do you have any family who could take them, or stay in your home? When we go out of town, if my babies can't come along, I have a family member stay here. That way their not too stressed out when I'm gone.

I just boarded Biddy & Tucker. The kennel is run by my cousin, so I was confident that they'd be well taken care of. The fee was $23 per day ($40 for 2 dogs). They are outside (supervised) all day in good weather. There are kiddy pools out when it is really hot, as well as covered shelter areas. When it is rainy or cool out they have a big fake outdoor area, but it's inside. It looks like a dog park. They have a white picket fence, fake trees, fake grass - it's very cute. At night they are put in their own kennel with food, water, a blanket & any personal items that you send with them (toys, treats, beds, blankets (I packed a picture of my boyfriend and myself so that they wouldn't forget us!), then they are fed again in the morning. Then they are bathed & groomed (if you want) on the day that they come home. I was really impressed. Good luck!!!

That's the type of kennel Benji went to years ago but we haven't used one since. He had an air conditioned indoor kennel with a doggie door going to a large fenced outside area, he was brushed and had quality time with the owner's grandkids who came out every afternoon. I took his bed, toys, food and treats and it worked out quite well. Benji was a lot bigger though...I'm a little nervous about leaving Jo and Riley...they're so tiny!

No, we don't have any family around us and we don't know anyone well enough to ask or trust to care for them.

Wow, $12 a day , the last time I boarded a dog it was $6 a day, but that was a long time ago. I'm not sure what it is here now. But I would look for a clean place, a place where there is someone there all the time, even on weekends. Able to go in and out whenever they want is a big plus. I use to use my vet, as they use to board animals. I always brought my own food and made sure that after they gave my westie a bath ( as they always did) he was to get advantage flea control, because the first time they didn't give him any and by the time I picked him up, he ripped himself apart from fleas!

I checked with our vet this morning...$7.00 per day, per dog. Now, I know that isn't bad...but...they're kept in a kennel, walked just twice a day and then left alone all night until they open again the next morning. That doesn't sound very nice to me, especially for 2 weeks straight. I guess I should do some checking around.
