| what age for 1st grooming? Belle is 12 weeks now and I would love to have her professionally groomed...her nails need to be trimmed and the hair on her pads, and I dont trust myself yet to since shes so squirmy. She still hasnt had all her vaccinations yet, we have 1 this week and then the final next month...do I need to wait until theyre all done? Also is there a trick to putting a bow on her since her hair is still short? |

| Jackson was 4 1/2 months at his first grooming. I would wait until she's had all of her shots.

Plus, let me add that your vet will trim the nails if you ask when you go for your next set of shots. The hair on the pads can be trimmed while they are sleeping when they are a puppy. Before you take her for her first grooming make sure you are starting good grooming habits at home as well.

| If you look on Craigslist, often times, well at least in my area there are groomers that will come right to your house!! I wouldnt bring her to a groomer without all her shots being completed..

| Sydney's first trip to the groomers was at 3 months. She still needs one more set of shots (next week). I asked the vet and he said no problem and that it was a good idea to get her use to being groomed by someone else early. In fact, she goes again on Tuesday. |

YT Addict | I've taken over the grooming since my husband did Derby's first grooming, and gave him a total buzzcut all over to get him use to the trimmers, he says. NEVER AGAIN. He's so much calmer with me, and let's face it. I know what hair to keep, and what to trim... GOd bless my DH! but after my awesome trimming with his eyes, and his ears- It's my job now. lol do not touch! I just can't wait for his hair to grow back!!!! He looks a little homely right now, but it'll grow... |

As for biting the brush, I always suggest that you make a special spot to do your brushing and grooming at home. The puppy needs to understand that the brush is not a toy and that is it only used to brush her hair. After a bath or whenever they need to be brushed I always put a towel down on the top of my dryer and use this as your grooming area. I would offer praise and treats as you introduce the brush or comb. Make sure as you brush that you touch all over her body, her face, legs, between the pads of the feet~ just like at a groomer. I also like to use the blow dryer after a bath but this an be frightening so at first I would lay it down on the towel on a very low setting. Slowly introducing it at little at a time. Since you have a baby it should be just a few minutes at a time and always when they get tired you should stop. If you make it a pleasant experience with treats and praising it will allow for a lifetime of positive grooming experiences.
